Can you believe that 2023 is mere days away? It seriously felt like it was summer time yesterday. The holidays were a blur. I feel like I blinked and the months of September through December disappeared. I don’t know if that is a “getting older” thing, or it’s just something that happens to everyone (eventually)?
The new year is almost here, and all I am hearing from people are “new year’s resolutions.” Personally I don’t ever make resolutions for myself. I used to, but I found that by mid-January my resolutions were pretty much ruined. For that reason I simply tell myself that I am going to make “better choices” for me and my family. Meaning, I’ll park a littler further way from the entrance to a store to get in a few extra steps, or resist the urge to eat a third cookie. I’m sure most people know what I am talking about.
People never think about making resolutions for their pets. You CAN walk a few minutes longer to provide your dog with some more exercise, or make an effort to play one on one more with your cat. Even more cuddle time would be greatly appreciated by your furry bestie, and frankly, I think we can all use a little extra cuddle time. It’s a great way to end a day (especially a stressful one).
Your pets can eat healthier too, providing that you make the resolution for them to feed them better food choices.

Our two newest additions – Maisey Book (black kitten), and Hobbes (ginger kitten).
We have six cats (well, four adult cats and two kittens). After losing cats over the years to cancer, liver problems and dementia, I take the health and wellbeing of my furry family member very seriously. That is why we are trying to feed our cats better food choices. Of course, with cats that can be easier said than done since they can be such finicky eaters. But that doesn’t stop us from trying to find foods they all love.
A while back I learned about the cat food brand Pure Cravings.
Pure Cravings cat food individually tests every tuna and salmon, and every catch of sardines and mackerel to a strict mercury limit. The sushi-grade fish are hand packed and cooked only once to preserve important Omega-3s. Additionally, the fish are 100% traceable and sustainably wild caught. Every can of Pure Cravings is grain and gluten-free and contains non-GMO ingredients.
It is possible for cats to develop mercury poisoning if they continually eat foods with high amounts of mercury in them. I honestly didn’t know that, and I am glad I know that now so that I can be more conscientious about the foods I serve our feline friends.
I also didn’t know that cats shouldn’t have gluten. I did know that about grains, because if you think about cats in the wild, how many of them eat grains? None. Wild cats eat meat, fish and poultry in the wild. They don’t graze in a corn field.
Pure Cravings sent me some of their canned cat food to try out with my cats.
The cans I received to review were cutlets, meaning they had chunks in them (they looked like chopped up pieces of fish). Sadly, one of our kittens wouldn’t eat them because she only eats pate for some odd reason. She won’t even eat shreds. But we’re used to that, which is why we buy special food just for her.
The flavors we received to review are;
- Wild Tuna and Salmon
- Salmon
- Tuna
- Wild Sardines
It was hit or miss with these flavors. I don’t think it was a texture thing, since our cats have had cutlet-like foods before. I think it might have been the flavors, meaning not all of our cats (with the exception of the kitten who doesn’t eat anything other than pates) liked the flavors.
We had one cat and our other kitten who ate all four flavors with no problem at all. In fact, the both gobbled down this food. They would even go after the plates of the other cats if they left anything on their dishes.
Of the flavors, Tuna was their favorite (the five of them ate it every time). Wild Tuna and Salmon was their next favorite. Wild Sardines was their least favorite. But like I said, cats are very finicky, so not all cats like all foods. I know this for a fact since our pantry is often filled with cans of foods we bought for our cats that they ended up not liking, or cans that they used to like, but suddenly won’t eat anymore (I can never understand that).
Would I purchase Pure Cravings again for my cats? Yes. Because for the most part they enjoyed it (finicky or not), plus I feel good knowing that I am feeding them food that is tested and mercury free. ANYTHING I can do to keep my cats happy and healthy is a priority for me.
I wish the food was available locally at our neighborhood pet stores. As far as I know it’s only available online.

I have not heard of Pure Cravings but will look into this. I do want to purchase the best food for my sweet kitty. She is a bit fussy though!
