I am impressed by the fact that more and more people are becoming more health conscious these days which is starting to impact brands who are trying to find healthier for you alternatives for consumers.
I wouldn’t consider myself a tried and true health “nut,” but I do try and make better decisions about the things I eat and drink. I find that I real labels a lot and I’m always on the look out for ingredients I know are good for me and my body.
One such ingredient is chia seeds. Chia seeds are little black seeds (they remind me of large poppy seeds) from the Salvia hispanica plant which is a member of the mint family (chia seeds do not taste minty).
Chia seeds might be tiny but they pack a lot of health benefits. They are high in fiber and protein. They do contain fat but it’s the essential Omega 3 kind. They also also loaded with antioxidants. Some studies suggest they could help you lose weight because the fiber in the chia seeds can help fill you up so you eat less.
I have tired a few products with chia seeds in them and so far I don’t mind them. They are icky on their own but they can be added to baked goods. yogurt, cereal, oatmeal and a variety of other things to make them more palatable. You can even top them on ice cream.
Chia seeds can also be added to granola and other products, which is exactly what a company called Mamma Chia has done.
Mamma Chia sent me some of their Chia Vitality Granola Clusters to try out.
I received to review the following flavors;
- Wild Blueberry
- Vanilla Almond
- Cinnamon Pecan
According to the brand, each serving has 1500 mg of Omega-3s, 10 grams of protein (soy free and dairy free), 5 grams of fiber (20% of the recommended daily value) and is made with gluten-free whole grains. They are also Kosher and USDA Certified Organic.
Each serving is 220 calories. A serving size is 1/2 of a cup.
You can enjoy the Mamma Chia Vitality Granola with your breakfast (on top of yogurt, oatmeal, cereal, mixed in smoothies…) or as an on-the-go snack. I normally enjoy it as a snack. I put some in a bag and take it to work with me. By mid-morning I’m usually hungry and looking for a snack to tie me over until I can get home for lunch.
I can honestly say I don’t have a favorite of the flavors I received. I like them all equally.
When you open the bags you can smell the ingredients such as the blueberries or vanilla. Their scent is very inviting.
They are really good. I have to measure some out before I enjoy them because I could literally eat half the bag in one sitting. It’s hard to stop! LOL!
I’ve even taken a handful at night when I get the late night munchies instead of reaching for a cookie or something along those lines. A handful of Chia Vitality Granola Clusters and a glass of water is enough to satisfy me and fill me up.
You can actually see the chia seeds in the clusters. I tried to get a good close up shot of some but none of my photos came out clear enough so you could see the seeds.
Each bag of Mamma Chia’s Chia Vitality Granola Clusters retails for $6.49.
