Now available on digital platforms is the latest addition to the Alien movie franchise, Alien: Romulus. The film will be available on Blu-ray, Ultra 4K and DVD December 3, 2024.
Alien: Romulus stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu.
Normally I write my own movie synopsis, but as I was writing it I realized that I was giving away too many details. I don’t want to provide any spoilers, so I’ll use the official synopsis instead.
This truly terrifying sci-fi horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful Alien franchise back to its iconic roots. While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young colonizers come face-to-face with the most relentless and deadly life form in the universe. Starring Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu, Alien: Romulus is directed by horror master Fede Alvarez from a screenplay by Alvarez and frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues based on characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett. Ridley Scott—who directed the original Alien and the series entries Prometheus and Alien:Covenant—produces with Michael Pruss and Walter Hill.
I will say that I appreciate that Ridley Scott was involved in this film. I feel like that helps to keep the film true to the movie franchise.
I have always been a fan of the Alien movie franchise. Just the thought of being stuck on a spaceship, lightyears away from any help, with a monstrous alien is terrifying. It gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about it. Factor in how terrifying the alien creatures are, including their “face hugger” offspring, it makes it even that much worse.
I have seen all the movies in the Alien franchise over the years. Admittedly I was not a fan of the original film. I felt that the second film was actually the best out of the original ones. Alien 3 was laughable (the way the creature got sucked out of the tiny hole in the spaceship is funny).
In Alien: Romulus I felt a little confused at first as to why we were watching this young lady and her humanoid robot “brother” on an industrial planet. I was also confused as to why she was kept there. In a way it almost felt like two different stories – the characters on the planet, and the characters on the spaceship. But that’s just me. My husband didn’t feel the same way.
If you find the “face hugger” creatures nightmare inducing, prepare yourself for this film. Not only are there a lot of them, but they also RUN and SWIM! Nope. Nope. Nope. Heck no! THAT was more creepy than the grown up alien. It’s one thing to see them spring out of a specimen jar and scurry across the floor. It’s another thing to see dozens of them RUNNING and swimming towards you.
The acting was decent. I have no issues with any of the actors.
There were a lot of gruesome deaths, as you can expect. I was surprised at which characters were killed off. The ending threw me off guard too (I wasn’t expecting any of it).
As you can imagine, the special effects are spectacular. I was impressed by all of it, especially when part of the ship “sliced” through the planet’s ring (no spoilers…).
Aliens 2 still remains my favorite out of the franchise, but this film still impressed me. I was very entertained (and creeped out!).
Just an FYI… the Ultra 4K version of this film will be available as a collectable limited edition steelbook with custom artwork and packaging.
There is bonus content worth checking out too (including on digital). Please note that the bonus content varies by retailer.
