Now available on DVD, as well as On Demand, is the horror film, Ankle Bitters, also known as Cherrypicker. I’m not sure why the film has two different names, but it was marketed to me as Ankle Biters, so that is the title I am working with.
Ankle Biters stars Zion Forrest Lee, Marianthi Evans, Lily Gail Reid, Violet Reid, Rosalee Reid, and Dahlia Reid. I can only assume that the girls are sisters in real life, based on their similar last name.
Comedian Colin Mochrie, as makes an appearance in this film. I was totally surprise to see him. I have only ever seen him on the television series, Whose Line is it Anyway?
The film was directed by Bennet De Brabandere, and is released by Dark Star Pictures.
Sean (Lee) was a pro hockey player, known as an enforcer. He falls in love with a woman named Laura (Evans). She is a widow with four adorable young daughters – Lily, Violet, Rosalee and Dahlia (their names in real life too).
Things are getting serious between the couple, and Sean wants to propose to Laura. So he invites her and the girls out to a lake house where he plans on proposing to her.
The girls are not fond of Sean, and they are afraid that he’s going to try and become their new dad (not knowing that he is planning on proposing).
When Sean and Laura are not around, the girls go into Sean’s bag and discover unusual stuff like duct tape and rope. They also find Sean’s phone where he has a video of him and Laura having rough sex (strangulation, taping Laura’s hands and legs…). To the girls, it looks as though Sean is abusive to their mother, not knowing that their mom is into kinky sex.
To protect their mom, the girls need to take things into their own hands. They need to get Sean out of their lives once and for all, but how? Exactly what are these angelic little evils girls up to? To find out, you need to purchase or rent Ankle Biters. Look for it where ever movies are sold/rented.
I want to say that this film is totally predictable, but it’s not. I was pleasantly surprised by things that happened in this film that I didn’t anticipate, most especially at the end. Kudos to the film’s makers for totally throwing me off guard with the ending.
First and foremost, the girls. I’m not sure how long they have been acting, but I thought they did a fantastic job. Let’s just say they were creepy enough that if they lived next door to me, I’d move!
There are sexual situations here and there in this film, but they don’t show nudity (at least none that I saw). None the less, the couple likes rough sex, so the sex scenes shown reflect that.
I liked the storyline. As I said, I thought it would be predictable – kids hate the guy in mom’s life and they want to gte rid of him no matter what. Yes, it happened that way, but it’s the ending that will really throw you off.
This is billed as a “horror” movie. I didn’t find it scary, but I guess in a way it’s creepy to think about children who are willing to go so far as to murder people (notice I didn’t specify) in order to “protect” their mom (even though she wasn’t in harm’s way at all).
There is some blood in this film. Someone gets murdered and his/her wounds (I don’t want to give anything away) is rather graphic. I was surprised but that, but as a horror movie fan it didn’t gross me out or anything like that.
Overall I really enjoyed the film. It’s not something I would purchase for our home movie collection, however, if I happened across the film on a premium channel, or a streaming service, such as Amazon Prime, I would certainly watch it again.
Here is the film’s trailer for your entertainment.
