I watch a lot of movies. I think to use the term “a lot” is even an understatement. Movies are a huge part of my life.
If you were to ask me to tell you about something that surprises me about actors and the movie industry, I would tell you that it’s seeing actors and actresses in roles you would never expect them to do.
I think all actors have movies they wish they never did. However, every now and then, a silly movie is all that is needed to propel an actor’s career. Case in point, Keanu Reeves.
Keanu Reeves has done a lot of big budget films, such as the Matrix films, Speed, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and the John Wick films. I agree that not all of his films were block buster hits, but I’d like to say he’s had an impressive career.
Keanu Reeves did the movie Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure back in 1989. That was a very silly movie. Entertaining, but very silly. The film was not made to be taken seriously. A few years later he did Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey with his co-star from the film film, Alex Winter.
Keanu’s star started rising after this film. He went on to star in the aforementioned Matrix and John Wick films, which were very well received. That made me wonder why he would go back to doing a third film in the Bill and Ted series. I mean… it’s Keanu Reeves. Did he “need” to do another film.
After watching the third film in the series, Bill and Ted Face the Music, I honestly think that Keanu did the film just for the fun of it. He’s done so many serious films over the years, that I think he needed to do something silly and fun for a change.
The movie starts out in 2020, where Bill and Ted are still friends. They are married, but their marriages are not the happiest. Bill and Ted have yet to write a song that will unite the world, and time and space are beginning to collapse.
Bill and Ted meet with Kelly, the daughter of their old guide, Rufus. She is there to take them to meet her mother, the Great Leader.
The Great Leader tells the friends that they have until 7:17 THAT NIGHT to write a song that will unite everyone, or reality as they know it will collapse.
Bill and Ted know they will not be able to write a song in that short amount of time, so they use Rufus’ time traveling phone booth to go into the future to steal a song from their future selves that they could use. Unfortunately, their future selves were unsuccessful as well.
The Great Leader is not as good as she seems. She sends a time traveling robot to kill them. Kelly tries to intervene, but instead of finding Bill and Ted, she meets their daughters, Billie and Thea.
Billie and Thea want to help their fathers, so they use Kelly’s time traveling machine to go back in time to meet up with great musicians, in hopes of writing the most amazing song to help their fathers. They meet up with people like Mozart, Louis Armstrong and Jimi Hendrix.
There is a lot of craziness that ensues involving a lot of time traveling back and forth, as well as Bill, Ted and their daughters ending up in hell.
Will Bill and Ted be able to write the most awesome song of all time in order to unite everyone before it’s too late? Will they ever help their daughters get out of hell? To find out, you need to pick up a copy of Bill and Ted Face the Music. Look for it where ever movies are sold or rented.
I received a copy of the film to review.
I had to watch the other Bill and Ted films to catch up on things. It’s been many years since I’ve seen them.
First and foremost… Reeves and Winter have aged. But… that is to be expected. Even so, they are still able to pull off the silly Bill and Ted characters.
Honestly, I didn’t go into watching this expecting too much, but I must say, I thought the film was terrific. I laughed a lot. It’s silly humor, and let’s face it, with all that has been going on this year with the pandemic and politics, we all need some silly, mindless humor from time to time.
Even my son, who has never seen a Bill and Ted movie, was laughing when he came into the living room for a bit after he came home from work. He sat down on the couch next to me about half way into the movie. He had no clue what was going on, yet he was laughing at the movie here and there.
If you are a fan of the Bill and Ted movies, you need to see this film. You’ll love it.
If you are not familiar with Bill and Ted movies, I think you can still watch this film and enjoy it. It’s not one of those films where you MUST see the previous movies to know what is going on. It helps, but I don’t think it’s mandatory. My son never even heard of Bill and Ted (sigh…) and he liked the film.
I watched the film digitally. There are bonus features on the Blu-ray copy of the film including Death Crib, Be Excellent to Each Other (behind the scenes), A Most Triumphant Duo and the Official Bill and Ted Face the Music Comic-Com Panel.
Below is the film’s trailer for your enjoyment.
