Available today (April 8, 2014) on Blu-ray and DVD is the film Cavemen by first time writer/director Herschel Faber.
Cavemen features an all-star cast of up and coming young Hollywood actors including Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect, TV’s “Ground
Floor”), Camilla Belle (10,000 BC), Chad Michael Murray (TV’s “One Tree Hill”), Dayo Okeniyi (Spectacular Now, The Hunger Games), Kenny Wormald (Footloose) and Alexis Knapp (Pitch Perfect, TV’s “Ground Floor”).
LA playboy Dean (Skylar Astin) is fed up with one-night-stands and empty relationships – he wants more out of life than just a party. With a little inspiration from his nine-year-old nephew and his best friend Tess (Camilla Belle), Dean decides to try his hand at finding true love for the first time – which proves to be much more difficult than he thought in modern-day Los Angeles. After a few hilariously bad first dates and some awful advice from his oversexed guy friends, Dean begins to realize that the true love he has been seeking may be much closer to home. But when he is forced to make a decision between the girl he knows is perfect for him and the seductive party-girl of his fantasies, will Dean finally grow up…or will he just continue the party?
I am sure that this story plays out every day in real life. I’m sure there are plenty of twenty-something year olds who are bored with the bar scene and tired of the single life. They want to settle down and tackle the next stage in their life.
I would not want to be single again. Being single, although fun at times, is also very hard. Especially in this day and age. People are much more “casual” when it comes to dating and one night stands are common place for many people. That is simply not my thing.
All of the characters in this film were likable, although oversexed Jay (Chad Michael Murray). I think his character was a bit overboard, but sadly there are probably many men out there just like him. It’s all about the sex, sex, sex and which woman he’s going to “bed” that night.
The guys in this film remind me of a bunch of college frat boys who haven’t really grown up yet. They all live together in the same apartment, even getting evicted from their apartment. It seems like the only one who is starting to take life more seriously is Dean.
This film is a bit predictable. You know how this film is going to end. It’s one of those cases where what you’ve been looking for has been right in front of you all the time.
I think Skylar Astin and Camilla Belle have great online chemistry. Camilla did a great job as a girl whose just one of the guys. She’s a “guy’s-girl”, if that makes any sense? She’s someone whose probably just as comfortable hanging out at a baseball game chugging beers and downing hot dogs as she would be dressed up in high heels at a romantic restaurant. I think she’s the kind of girl most guys are looking for. And unlike the men in this film she doesn’t sleep around and she’s not obsessed with sex.
I’m not a prude, but I do think this film went a little overboard with the sex – from the nudity to the crude language and conversations. It’s supposed to be a romantic comedy but the non-stop sex, sex, sex sort of took away from the romantic storyline.
People refer to romantic films that appeal to women as a “chick flick”. For me, this is more of a male version of a chick flick. This film would appeal more to men then women. Of course good looking guys like Skylar Astin and Chad Michael Murray would make this film appeal to women too – not for the storyline but more so the “eye candy”. LOL!
This is very much a “guy’s film”.
This film was “OK”. I can’t say that I loved it, nor can I say I hated it. I’m sort of in the middle. I think the film has a lot going for it, but for me personally the overload of sex threw it off. I would have preferred less sex stuff and more about the friendship and relationship between Dean and Tess. If the film focused more on Dean and Tess and less on the roommates sexual escapades this film could have been pretty amazing. I really liked the relationship between Dean and Tess.
I have a Blu-ray copy of the film I was sent to review. My copy had something wrong with it so I was unable to see if it had any bonus features. I don’t believe it does.
Cavemen is available today. Look for it wherever movies are sold.
Here is the trailer for your enjoyment.

This does look like a decent movie with a great cast. I agree that I would also prefer movies about friendships and relationships though.

This movie sounds like a story that we’ve all seen a thousand times before. I think it’s a movie that people would choose to watch based on the cast, myself included. Thank you for sharing this review.
