I was born and raised in upstate New York (Dutchess County to be exact). I consider myself from the “country,” even though Dutchess looks more like the suburbs now (overly populated). Thankfully further upstate (Adirondacks for example) are still covered in forests rather than housing developments.
As a young girl, I spent a lot of time playing in the woods behind my house. I never worried about snakes, skunks or dare I say, monsters. Nothing like that ever occurred to me.
It wasn’t until I saw the films Friday the 13th and Prophecy (1979) that I became concerned about what could be lurking in the woods. Naturally, I had my reservations when playing around in the woods behind my home. What if a psycho wielding a sword or an “inside out” bear (see Prophecy, you’ll know what I mean) are out there trying to get me? Yikes!
The film Dawn of the Beast is about what could be lurking in the woods. One of the most well known beast is Big Foot, but there is another creature that stem from folklore that could also be luring… the Wendigo.
In Dawn of the Beast, a group of college students and their professor head out into the woods for the weekend as part of the Cryptozoology class.
Cryptozoology is the search for and study of animals whose existence or survival is disputed or unsubstantiated, such as the Loch Ness monster and the yeti.
Seriously… If there was a Cryptozoology class offered at a local college, I would sign up for that class in a heartbeat. I am fascinated by creatures such as Big Foot, Loch Ness and Rakes (Rakes are human looking creatures that live in the woods. They are really creepy looking!). I certainly don’t want to come across any of these creatures in person. I just think they are interesting.
The group are in the woods looking for the ever elusive Big Foot. That is until they learn about another beast that is lurking in the woods, one that could be even more deadly than Big Foot – the legendary Wendigo. The Wendigo is a man-like beast that feasts on humans. Many images of Wendigos show it with deer-like antlers on it’s head. Creepy!
This weekend is the weekend from hell – literally – when the group find themselves being hunted by the creature they were looking for, not to mention a deadly Wendigo. Forget the battle between man and beast – this is a battle between beast, man and beast!
Will anyone survive the weekend from hell? Will anyone provide proof positive that Big Foot and the Wendigo exisit to the outside world? To find out, you need to rent or purchase Dawn of the Beast. Look for it where ever movies are sold or rented.
I liked the overall premise of the film. Think about it… more than one monster lurking in the woods trying to make you their next meal? That’s scary! There are visuals in regards to the monsters that are really cool too – and this is coming from a horror movie “snob.” It takes A LOT to impress me.
One fatal flaw with this film is that it does something that irks me to the core – it’s too dark! I don’t like movies that are so dark that you can barely make out what is going on. I understand that the darkness adds to the scariness of the film, but when it’s TOO dark, and it’s hard to make out what is going on, it takes away from the film. Maybe it’s just me, but that is how I feel about films that are too dark. I even turned off the lights in hopes it would make things easier to see (FYI… I was just at the eye doctor three weeks ago. My eyes are fine).
The storyline is good, especially how it ties in part of the story that we see at the beginning of the film.
The acting was OK. I don’t think anyone really stood out to me. Sorry…
As far as the scariness goes, horror movie snobs might be impressed, but certainly not scared. For people who are easily scared by things that go bump in the night, then they will certainly find themselves jumping out of their seats at times during this film.
If you are looking for a horror movie, you should check out Dawn of the Beast.
