Now available on all major streaming platforms is the comedy film, Free Guy.
Free Guy will be available on Blu-ray, DVD and 4K Ultra on October 12, 2021.
Free Guy stars Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Taika Waititi, and Lil Rel Howery.
I’m sure many of us feel like we’re stuck in a rut, where we do the same thing each and every day. We get up, we commute to work, we work, we commute home, we cook dinner, do laundry and clean, then go to bed, only to wake up the next day to do the same things over and over again. Guy (Reynolds) lives the same kind of life, except it doesn’t phase him. Guy is just a happy-go-lucky man who goes about his days in the same manner, even getting robbed EVERY DAY at the bank where he works. But that crime like that is common place where Guy lives. You see, Guy is a background character in a video game.
Guy is what is known as a NPC (Non-Player Character). Every day he’s faced with characters that are being controlled by real life people, all of which are hell bent on robbing banks, punching people in the face as they walk down the sidewalk, and blowing things up. Characters controlled by real people are called “Sunglasses,” because they all wear sunglasses.
One day a “Sunglasses” character named Molotov Girl passes Guy on the street. For some reason she throws him out of his usual routine. Guy is smitten with her and wants to find her to get to know her. This change that he feels inside prompts him to confront one of the “Sunglasses” players and take his sunglasses.
When Guy puts on the sunglasses he starts to see his world for what it really is – a crazy video game.
Molotov Girl is controlled by a woman named Millie (Comer). She’s playing the game in hopes of finding evidence that the game’s publisher, Antwan (Waititi) stole the programming she and her friend Keys (Keery) created. In their version of the game, it was meant to be a true to life situation, where as Antwan made their game into a violent game where people are encouraged to rob banks and blow things up.
Millie is using Molotov Girl (in the game) to find evidence she can use against Antwan. She soon realizes that Guy might be exactly what she needs to find what she’s looking for.
How is it that Guy suddenly was able to break free of being a NPC, and no one else in the game can see the things that he sees? What makes him so different? To find out, you need to rent or purchase Free Guy. Look for it where ever movies are rented/sold.
Ryan Reynolds was the perfect choice for this role. Not only is he a fantastic comedian, but his expressions really add to the situations played out on the screen. From the very beginning I fell in love with his character, and I was rooting for him the entire film. I wanted Guy to find happiness, whether it was an NPC, or something else.
I liked seeing Joe Keery in this film. I’m a fan of Stranger Things, and his character in the series is one of my favorites. I wish they gave his character more screen time.
The special effects in this film are amazing! I wish I had seen this film on the big screen. It’s amazing how they re-created a video game world within this film. It’s not cute like Wreck-It-Ralph. It looks like a real video game like Forte Night or Grand Theft Auto.
The story line is pretty good, although I was a bit confused in the beginning. I guess it’s because the only games I used to play on a regular basis was Pac Man and Frogger (yeah… I’m showing my age).
I do think the film ran much longer than necessary. The film is nearly two hours long. I think it could have been condensed to an hour and a half if they cut out some parts that really didn’t make or break the film.
Free Guy is rated PG-13. I don’t recall any bad language, and there wasn’t any nudity. I suppose the rating was due to the violence (the violence from the “gaming” aspect from the film).
The film was directed by Shawn Levy. I met him years ago when he directed another favorite film of mine, Real Steel. He’s a cool guy.
