Coming to theaters on Friday, August 9, 2024, is the “dramady” film, Running on Empty. The film will be available on Video on Demand (VOD) on August 27, 2024.
The film stars Keir Gilchrist, Lucy Hale, Francesca Eastwood, Rhys Coiro, Jay Pharoah, Dustin Milligan, Dylan Flashner, Lisa Yaro, Monica Potter, Jim Gaffigan.
Science has found a way to predict, almost to the day, how many days you have left to live. The test is almost always accurate.
Mortimer (Gilchrist), works as a mortician. At his fiancée’s urging (played by Eastwood), Mort takes the special test. He learns that he has less than a year to live.
It seems at this point, Mort’s impeding death is not the only bad thing in his life. He can’t catch a break.
Mort learns about a dating service that matches people use with others with similar death dates. It’s there that he meets a videographer (Hale), who helps him learn some valuable life lessons.
What will Mort’s final days be like? Could the test be wrong? To find out, you need to go see Running on Empty. Look for it at a theater near you, on on VOD the end of the month.
I like the storyline in this film. I could not imagine knowing almost to the day how long you have left to live. Part of this film’s appeal, for me, is it makes a point of expressing the importance of making each day count, and to see the people, places and things around you in a different light. For example, if you always dreamed of climbing Mt. Fuji in Japan, why wait? What’s stopping you? After all, you could meet your demise tomorrow and never have the chance to experience something you’ve always dreamed of.
The acting was decent. I like Lucy Hale. I think she’s a good actress. I have seen her in many films, and almost all of them I’ve truly enjoyed.
Keir Gilchrist played they nerdy Mort very well. He was believable in his role. I don’t even think he smiled much in the film (to my recollection).
I found it hear to believe that Monica Porter was Mort’s mother. Biologically speaking she’s old enough to be her son in real life, but I’ve always thought of her in younger roles (Con Air, Last House on the Left...).
Overall I enjoyed the film. It kept my attention the entire time.
