Available today on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD is the movie Sisters.
Sisters stars Tine Fey, Amy Poehler, James Brolin, Diane Weist, Maya Rudolph, John Cena and John Leguizamo.
Maura (Poehler) and Kate Ellis are sisters. They are the complete opposite of on another when it comes to their personalities. Maura is very kind and caring. She has her act together and is perfectly content living alone, after her divorce, with her adopted dog.
Kate is the opposite of her younger sister Maura. She can’t keep a job, she bounces from home to home and she loves to party and have fun. Her daughter Haley is not fond of her mother’s wild ways and refuses to live with her. Instead she stays at friend’s houses.
One day Maura and Kate’s parents (Brolin and Weist) lay a bomb shell on Maura – they are putting their childhood home up on the market. Even though Maura is devastated to hear that, her parents leave it up to her to tell her sister Kate about it. They also need Maura and Kate to come back to Orlando and clean out all of their stuff from the bedroom they shared.
Maura is able to lure Kate back to Orlando. She tricks Kate into going back to their childhood home only to find that their parents lied to them. Their childhood home is not on the market – it’s been sold to a snooty couple from New York City.
Maura and Kate have only a few day to clear out their stuff before the final inspection for the buyers.
Before leaving their childhood home forever, Maura and Kate decide to throw one last party. Their parties were epic back when they were teenagers, so they reached out to their childhood friends and invited them to their party.
Kate also has Maura invite their handsome neighbor from down the street. Maura has been divorced for a long time and Kate things she needs to use this party as an excuse to “hook up” with the handsome neighbor.
Kate was always the one who had fun at their parties and Maura was the one to play “Party Mom” – the one who made sure that everyone was safe and taken care of. This time around Maura wants Kate to be “Party Mom” so that she can let her “freak flag fly.” Kate reluctantly agrees.
Initially their party is about as fun as a funeral. Their friends are mostly married and parents now and forgot how to have fun. Determined to make this a night to remember, the girls do everything they can to wake the party up.
Maura and Kate’s party is filling in full swing – and getting seriously out of control. Have they gone too far? To find out you need to pick up a copy of Sisters, now available where ever movie are sold.
I was sent the movie to review. There are two options on the Blu-ray/DVD set – the theatrical version of the film and the unrated version. I watched the unrated version. I am not sure how much of a difference there is between the two. My review is based on the unrated version. The version shown in theaters might be slightly different.
The story line is pretty good. I think many people can relate to losing the home they grew up in. My childhood home was sold to someone else last year. It’s hard to believe that it’s no longer a part of our family. We were the ONLY family to live in it up until last year. It’s hard to think about never having a chance to visit the room I slept in and the playroom that I spend many hours playing in.
I also think some people can relate to being a total opposite of their sibling/siblings. My husband is a perfect example of that. He is nothing like his siblings. It’s as if he’s not even related to them – that is how different he is.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were perfectly cast for these roles. I couldn’t see another set of comedians playing these parts. They brought their typical brand of humor to the movie. They also have great chemistry together.
I saw the unrated version and there was a lot of foul language, sex talk, adult humor, drug use and drinking. There was a bit too much foul language, sex talk and adult humor for my taste, but I know other people find that kind of stuff really funny.
The film is long (a little over two hours) but surprisingly it didn’t seem that long. There was no “lag time” or slow moments.
The movie is fun and entertaining, if you can get past the stuff that makes the film “R” rated.
There are some bonus features including deleted scenes, extended scenes and bloopers.
Here is the film’s trailer for your entertainment. It’s the theatrical trailer. The movie is now available for home viewing.
