Now available on Blu-ray, DVD and digital is the comedy/thriller The Beta Test.
The Beta Test stars Jim Cummings, PJ McCabe, and Virginia Newcomb.
Jordan (Cummings) works as a Hollywood agent along side his best friend PJ (McCabe). He’s also engaged to a lovely young lady, Caroline (Newcomb).
Jordan can’t seem to catch a break when it comes to landing his dream accounts. He’s also a bit stressed out when it comes to his upcoming nuptials. He’s not into it as much as his fiancée is.
One day Jordan receives an unusual envelope, inviting him to meet up at a hotel room on a specific date and time for a sexual rendezvous.
Jordan doesn’t know what he should do. He’s certainly very intrigued, but at the same time, he is engaged. Jordan’s desire to take advantage of this sexual situation gets the best of him, and he meets up with an unknown woman at the hotel as instructed. He doesn’t know who she is because the both of them wore masks.
Jordan soon regrets his decision, and worries that Caroline might find out. He also has no clue who the woman was at the hotel room, and tries in vain to find out.
To make matters worse, others who received the same invitation (both men and woman) end up DEAD.
Can Jordan figure out the mystery woman, and what it was all about, before it’s too late? Before Caroline finds out or before he ends up dead too? To find out, you need to purchase or rent The Beta Test. Look for it where ever movies are sold/rented.
Jim Cummings is interesting to watch. He’s funny… but in a stressed out, crazy kind of way. You want to like his character, but at the same time, his anxiety and paranoia get the best of you, the viewer (at least it did me). You can see how his emotions get bottled up (his character) and I was waiting for it to come to a head and for him to explode.
I’ve seen Mr. Cummings in the film called The Wolf of Snow Hollow. His character was the same way (he didn’t cheat on anyone in that film).
I know this film is a comedy/thriller, but honestly, I didn’t laugh at all. It’s not that I didn’t find some things funny, it just wasn’t funny enough for me to laugh. Cummings mannerisms and facial expressions are what I found to be most humorous.
I’m on the fence with this movie. I liked it… but then again I didn’t like it. There were entertaining aspects to it, but overall I wouldn’t say it was a favorite movie.
To be honest, I would never purchase the movie for my home movie collection, but if I happened to come across the film on a premium channel, I would watch it again, only because parts of it were a bit confusing for me, and I would like to see the movie again just to see if I can make better sense of things.
I give Jim Cummings all the credit in the world. He wrote, directed and stared in this film. I’m sure that is not an easy thing to do. Hats off to him for doing a great job.
The film runs for about an hour and a half. I am not sure of the rating, but I would have to say it’s R due to the sexual situations and language.
Below is the film’s trailer for your enjoyment.
