Available today on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital is the latest SpongeBob SquarePants movie, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.
This film features the voice talents of Tom Kenny, Keanu Reeves, Snoop Dogg, Tiffany Haddish, Danny Trejo, Matt Berry and Awkwafina.
Plankton is up to his old tricks. Once again he’s trying to steal the recipe for Krabby Patties, and once again his mission is foiled by his nemeses, SpongeBob. SpongeBob, of course, doesn’t even realize what he’s doing most of the time.
If Plankton ever wants to get his hands on the recipe, he must find a way to do away with SpongeBob. But that might be easier said than done. That is until he learns about something King Poseidon is in great need of – sea snails. King Poseidon is very vain, and he uses the slime from sea snails to help keep him young and handsome. His greed has used up almost all of the sea snails in the ocean, making them nearly extinct.
This information gives Plankton a way of getting rid of SpongeBob so that he can finally steal the recipe.
Plankton kidnaps SpongeBob’s pet Gary, and hands him over to King Poseidon. Plankton hopes that SpongeBob will go off looking for Gary, giving him the opportunity to steal the recipe.
SpongeBob is heartbroken when he comes home from work to discover that Gary is no where to be found. He learns that King Poseidon must have him and heads off with Patrick to find him. To ensure that they don’t return, Plankton offers his robot Otto to accompany them.
Their quest to find Gary takes some twists and turns involving a wise sage (Reeves), zombie pirates and an “evil spirit,” to name a few.
Even of SpongeBob makes it to the Lost City of Atlantis, where King Poseidon lives, there is no guarantee that he’ll let Gary go. The king is too vain to let his beauty fade.
Will SpongeBob be able to save Gary before it’s too late? Will Plankton FINALLY get the Krabby Patty recipe? To find out, you need to purchase or rent The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run. Look for it where ever movies are sold/rented.
This is a fun movie that the whole family could enjoy (Family Movie Night). The film is rated PG. I didn’t see anything “wrong” with the film as far as children are concerned. Adults will find certain things funny where as children will find other things funny. That is the beauty of movies like this – there is something for everyone to enjoy.
I LOVE the animation in this film. It’s not 3-D, but it’s not “flat” like typical cartoons. It’s certainly not like the animated cartoons I watched as a kid (Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry...). The animation is spectacular in this film.
There is an animated series called Kamp Koral on Paramount+ television streaming service. If you have seen the series, then you know what kind of animation to expect in this film. In fact, they show scenes from Kamp Koral because that is where SpongeBob and their friends met. The characters were SO CUTE when they were little.
The Lost City of Atlantis is really cool. It’s an animated, under the sea, version of Atlantic City.
Out of all the SpongeBob full length movies, this one is my favorite. I love the storyline, I love the characters (Keanu Reeves as a wild, old sage? Ha ha!) and I even love the music.
There are some bonus features with the Blu-ray/DVD copy of the movie which include;
- A mini movie
- Deleted Storyboard Scenes
- Sing Along Music Videos
- Arts & Crafts
- And More!
I haven’t watched the bonus content yet, but I am excited to do so, especially the mini-movie, deleted scenes and arts and crafts. I work with children, and they all know who SpongeBob is, so I’m sure they would enjoy doing some SpongeBob related crafts.
I’ll be honest, I used to think SpongeBob SquarePants was really silly when my kids were little. In fact, I was the last person in my family to even watch the show. As time went on I learned to love it just as much as the rest of my family. I think this movie is the “cherry” on top of the SpongeBob sundae. I would have no problem watching it again. It’s such a fun movie. Silly, but that’s how SpongeBob is. It’s not meant to be taken seriously. After a year and a half we’ve all had, we all need some silly humor in our lives.
