Now available on digital services such as Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu), Movies Anywhere, Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video is the blockbuster, high octane hit, Twisters.
Twisters stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos and Maura Tierney.
Twisters brings back the blockbuster disaster epic with a whirlwind of heart-stopping action and exhilarating thrills. Ever since a devastating tornado encounter, Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones) gave up chasing storms across the Oklahoma prairie to safely study them on screens in New York City. Lured back to the field by her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) and a once-in-a-lifetime scientific opportunity, Kate crosses paths with Tyler (Glen Powell), a charming daredevil and self-proclaimed tornado wrangler whose thirst for tornado-tracking adventures made him a social media sensation. As storm season intensifies with terrifying phenomena unlike anything seen before, Kate and Tyler realize they may need to work together if they are to have any chance of taming, and surviving, an unprecedented outbreak of destructive tornados.
My husband and I were fans of the 1996 film Twister (Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton). It’s similar in the way it’s about crazy (if you ask me) people who intentionally chase after tornados. The 1996 film has the characters trying to find a way to predict tornados. In Twisters, the characters are trying to find a way to stop them before they cause mass destruction.
There is a lot to be said about going to see a movie in the movie theater compared to watching them at home. More times than not it’s cheaper to rent or purchase a movie to watch in the comfort of your own home, however, there are films that MUST be seen on the big screen. Twisters would be one of those films that would be mind-blowing if seen on a huge movie theater screen. We really missed the boat on that (it’s no longer playing locally). Thankfully I was sent a digital copy of this film to review.
Twisters does not fail to impress. Within the first few MINUTES of the film opening there is edge-of-your-seat action – literally! I was surprised to see actress Kiernan Brennan Shipka (Long Legs, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Totally Killer) have such a brief role in this film (without going into detail).
First and foremost the acting in this film is terrific. Each actor brought their character to life. Even better, they made their character very believable. It was as if their roles were written especially for them. I know that is a cheesy thing to say, but it’s true.
I’ve only seen Daisy Edgar-Jones in one other thing, Where the Crawdads Sing. I couldn’t imagine her in a film like Twisters. She didn’t appear to be the “action hero” type of person. She proved me wrong after seeing her in Twisters. She’s not that sweet, innocent girl from the marsh in this film.
Glen Powell plays the character of Tyler Owens spot-on. He has that “good ole boy” appeal to him with a reckless adrenaline junky mixed in.
Even Anthony Ramos played his character perfectly. Initially I was getting a bad feeling about his characters true intentions, but it’s hard not to like him with those expressive puppy dog eyes.
All the secondary characters were terrific too. The film makers did a fantastic job casting this film.
The special effects in this film are incredible. So much so I think my anxiety was kicking in because I felt like I was right in the middle of the action. That is the sign of a great film – when you feel like you are right there with the characters and experiencing things the same time they are.
This film has a run time of over two hours, but it doesn’t feel like a long film. Sometimes films seem like they are dragging, but that was not the case with this film at all. As I mentioned earlier, the action starts the moment the film starts, and it doesn’t let up until the very end.
I will say that people who live in areas prone to tornados are special people. I couldn’t do it. We almost had to transfer to Iowa years ago. I’m glad we didn’t. I’ll take the snow in the northeast anytime over tornadoes.
Twisters won’t be available on Blu-ray until October 2024. The physical copies will contain bonus content such as a gag reel and deleted scenes.
If you haven’t seen this film, I highly recommend it. It will “blow you away” (ha ha).
