Now streaming on Shudder is the foreign horror film, Where Evil Lurks. The movie is from IFC Films.
Where Evil Lurks is from Argentina. The film is in Spanish with English subtitles.
When brothers Pedro (Ezequiel Rodríguez) and Jimmy (Demián Salomón) discover that a demonic infection has been festering in a nearby farmhouse — its very proximity poisoning the local livestock — they attempt to evict the victim from their land. Failing to adhere to the proper rites of exorcism, their reckless actions inadvertently trigger an epidemic of possessions across their rural community. Now they must outrun an encroaching evil as it corrupts and mutilates everyone it is exposed to, and enlist the aid of a wizened “cleaner,” who holds the only tools that can stop this supernatural plague.
I know that many people are turned off by subtitles, but trust me, if you like horror movies you’ll want to see this film. It’s honestly not that hard to follow along with the subtitles.
I am a horror movie “snob,” and I find today’s horror movies are not about the horror but more so about the blood and gore. Just because a film has buckets of blood doesn’t mean it’s a horror movie. A horror movie is suppose to actually scare you and keep you on the edge of your seat because you are fearful of what will happen next. THAT is a horror move, not tons of gore. Maybe they need to start a new genre of films, Gore.
This film is gross. I’m used to seeing zombies eating intestines and serial killers whacking off someone’s head. However this film was gross in other ways. It had me saying “eww” a few times, and I’m not one to do that because I tend to be numb to the grossness. Not with this film. It was gross in unexpected ways. I was shocked to be honest with you.
When it comes to horror movies I have two rules – don’t harm children or animals. Sadly this film did both. The animal kills were not shown, but the children, well let’s just say they were shocking. Truly SHOCKING. Even I was left speechless.
Most horror films are just different versions of the same storyline. This film was different. It was an original story, and I find that very refreshing.
The acting was fantastic. I was even impressed by the children in this film. One young man stood out to me. He played an autistic teen with great realism.
This film doesn’t have any jump scares.
I didn’t find the film scary, only because I am used to scary films. This film did keep me on the edge of my seat because I was getting anxious about what was going to happen next. The entire story line was unforeseen.
I was very entertained by this film and I would definitely watch it again. That says a lot since I have only truly liked one other horror movie in the past seven years (Train to Busan).
Where Evil Lurks is now streaming on Shudder. Shudder is a subscription streaming service that plays nothing but horror movies. Many of them are no main stream films, however, there are plenty of “gems” to be found. I subscribe to Shudder and I have found many entertaining films that I have never heard of before.
