Let’s be honest: most of us have spent years decoding ingredient labels that look more like a high school chemistry final than a self-care routine. It’s a bit of a wake-up call when you realize that those “harsh chemicals”—the parabens, synthetic fragrances, and sulfates—are often just cheap fillers that strip your skin’s natural defenses in exchange for a quick fix. Choosing natural ingredients isn’t just about being “trendy”; it’s about feeding your skin nutrient-dense botanicals that work with your biology rather than against it. That’s exactly where Wholesome Hippy shines, bridging the gap between earthy, plant-based purity and the high-performance results we all crave without the toxic baggage.
Finding a product that actually delivers on its promises can feel like finding a needle in a haystack—especially when you’re looking for a natural alternative to “big pharma” solutions. After putting the brand Wholesome Hippy to the test, I’ve found that their approach to transdermal wellness isn’t just about smelling good; it’s about strategic, plant-based recovery.
If you are unfamiliar with the term “transdermal,” it simply means the delivery of a medication or active ingredients through the skin and directly into the bloodstream for a systemic effect. Often delivered via patches, gels, or ointments, this method allows for slow, consistent absorption, bypassing the digestive system and liver. It might sound scary, but it’s not. We give mediation to our cat via a transdermal cream that we apply to the inside of his ear. It’s a perfectly safe method of delivery.
Wholesome Hippy was kind enough to send me a couple of their products to review – Daytime Focus and Super Sleepy Time. Staying alert and focused during the day and getting a restful night’s sleep are two issues that I deal with daily.

Daytime Focus: The “Coffee for Your Skin”
If you’re like me, mornings can feel like walking through a fog. Most “focus” products are stimulants that leave you jittery, but the Daytime Focus “Calm Cream” takes a completely different path.
Since this cream is designed to give you a steady “leveling out” and mental clarity without the jitters, you want to apply it where it can be absorbed quickly into your system.
- Pulse Points: Rub a small amount into your wrists and neck. This allows the essential oils (like Bergamot Orange) to act as a natural aromatherapy boost while the magnesium absorbs through the thin skin.
- The Chest: Massaging it onto your chest helps you breathe in the energizing scent throughout the morning.
- Targeted Tension: If you carry stress in your shoulders or upper back while working, apply it directly to those muscles to help them relax while you focus.
I applied the product to my pulse points, I never tried the other two options. Not yet anyway.
The first thing I noticed was the scent – a bright, zesty Bergamot Orange that immediately perks up the senses without being cloying. But the real magic is in the formula. It combines the brand’s signature Magnesium and Vitamin D3 base with a boost of Guarana and Vitamin B12.
I have been very curious about Magnesium lately. I don’t get enough of it in my daily life. Magnesium is needed for more than 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It helps to maintain normal nerve and muscle function, supports a healthy immune system, keeps the heartbeat steady, and helps bones remain strong. It also helps adjust blood glucose levels. It aids in the production of energy and protein. You can get Magnesium from sources such as dark green leafy vegetables, nuts, legumes and whole grains.
This cream has a thick, buttery texture that absorbs surprisingly fast. I started applying it to my pulse points and neck right before I left for work in the afternoon to avoid the dreaded afternoon slump that many people experience.
Instead of a caffeine spike, I felt a steady “leveling out.” The magnesium eases tension, while the B12 seems to provide a subtle mental clarity. It’s like a deep breath in a jar.
I’ve been using this in the morning too, as soon as I sit down with my cup of coffee. I find that it’s a great way to start my day and actually get things accomplished during the morning when I tend to drag the most (mental fog, no energy).

Super Sleepy Time: The Ultimate Nightly Reset
While the Daytime Focus gets you through the hustle, the Super Sleepy Time “Calm Cream” is designed to shut it all down. This isn’t just a lavender lotion; it’s a powerhouse of Melatonin, Valerian Root, and Magnesium.
This product is infused with Chamomile, giving it a soft, herbaceous aroma that signals to your brain that the day is over. I found that applying it to the bottoms of my feet and my calves – areas where I usually feel restless or “twitchy” – made the biggest difference. I also suffer from “Charlie horses” from time to time. So far I haven’t experienced one while using this product, so I can’t comment on if it truly helps with those or not. They can be so painful too.
What makes this unique is the inclusion of Arnica and Turmeric. Usually, sleep creams ignore the fact that physical discomfort often keeps us awake. Many of us toss and turn all night due to physical issues such as inflammation and muscle tension. These ingredients alongside the sleep-inducing melatonin, feels like it’s tackling insomnia from two directions. I woke up without that “melatonin hangover” (the grogginess) because the dose is absorbed through the skin, not processed heavily through the gut. In fact, I try to avoid melatonin whenever possible.
Both creams share a base of Shea, Cocoa, and Mango butters, which means they double as high-end moisturizers. My skin felt velvety, not greasy, which is a rare feat for a magnesium-based product. If you have ever used a magnesium product you might now what I mean.
If you’re looking to transition away from synthetic energy drinks or harsh sleep aids, the Wholesome Hippy duo offers a grounded, effective ritual that respects your body’s natural rhythm. It’s rare to find a brand that balances “hippie” purity with “wholesome” results this effectively.
Wholesome Hippy has other interesting products to choose from including body scrubs, face washes, acne toners and more.
