In a previous post, I wrote about about how families don’t play together like they used to. Computer games and smart phone games have taken over. Fun activities, such as board games, have taken a “backseat.” In some households I doubt people even have board games anymore.
If you are interested in reading that post, you can find it here – Cherish Family Time with Hand-crafted Board Games from Across the Board.
My kids are older now (in their 20’s), but I do work with children. I am the site director for a program catering to children from 5-12 years old. That is a huge age difference, and it’s not always easy for me to find games and activities that they can all enjoy together, or at the very least a huge chunk of them.
I prefer not to spend too much money on supplies for games and activities too. I’m not being “cheap,” but I do have a monthly budget I need to stick to. The funds I’m allotted not only cover games and activities, but also other supplies (markers, crayons, paper…) and snacks. Buying snacks and fresh produce for 20+ kids each day can get expensive.
I also look for games and activities that several kids can play together, or the entire group. Having to take turns playing a game can sometimes lead to arguments and tears. The more kids that can play together, the better.
I was recently sent a book to review that is filled with plenty of ideas that I can apply to the kids at work. It’s geared towards parents, but honestly, most of the games and activities I see in the book can be used in a group setting as well.
The book is called Play Together. It was written by Laura Haver.

Play Together is a paperback book chuck full of fun ideas that I have never heard of before, and trust me, I am always on Google and Pinterest looking for ideas to do with my “work kids.”
I love that the games and activities are easy to do and understand, and require very little supplies, if not at all.
Here are a few pages from the book to give you an idea.
The book is divided up into different sections;
- Let’s Begin (Introduction)
- Let’s Play (games)
- Let’s Learn
- Bonus Fun
I have several pages in this book “dog earred,” and I’m not even done reading from cover to cover yet. I found so many ideas to use with my “work kids.” This book is going to be a huge help for me this upcoming school year.
As a parent, I see a lot of value in this book. I wish I had something like this when my kids were little. It would have helped me keep my own kids happy and engaged.
I’m not the only one who appreciates this book. Here are what others think about this book.
