Who doesn’t love cake? Cake is a fun way to celebrate life’s big, and not so big, moments.
Growing up my mom would have cake for just about every occasion. You knew it was something extra special when she would buy an ice cream cake. Ice cream cake, for me, was the king of all cakes.
Now that I am an adult, and I can purchase cake whenever I want, we tend to have ice cream cake more so than regular cakes. I don’t want for big occasions to pick up an ice cream cake. I think it’s OK to celebrate any occasion with a rich and creamy ice cream cake whether its the first day of school, last day of school, or an excellent report card – not to mention birthdays, anniversaries and holidays.
I have to admit that there have been times when I purchased an ice cream cake “just because.” My family really loves ice cream cake. Thankfully they are readily available at your local grocery store or Friendly’s restaurant.
Speaking of Friendly’s – have you seen their new ice cream cakes created through a partnership with Crayola?
Friendly’s Ice Cream and Crayola have teamed up to offer consumers (and ice cream lovers) a one of a kind, premium Decorate Your Own Ice Cream Cake.
Now you can decorate your cake – and eat it too!
The Decorate Your Own Ice Cream Cake is topped with whipped icing and comes with red and blue icing packets, green and yellow sprinkles and rainbow confetti. You can use the icing, sprinkles and confetti to decorate your ice cream cake any way you see fit.
The cake is handmade at Friendly’s creamery in Wilbraham, Massachusetts and has creamy layers of vanilla and rich chocolate ice cream separated by my personal favorite, the chocolate crunchies.
You can decorate your own ice cream cake to celebrate a special occasion or decorate it with your family for something fun to do together.
Friendly’s and Crayola sent me one of the cakes to try out with my family.
I should note that baking and decorating cakes/cupcakes is not my forte. I have the best intentions – they just never work out the way I envision them in my mind.
I wanted to make a cake that said “Happy Spring.” It was still very much winter when we decorated the cake. I just wanted to write “Happy Spring” as a reminder that spring was on it’s way.
Well… it didn’t turn out that well. My hand was not as steady as I had hoped it would be. My husband didn’t want to make the attempt. He was afraid he’d make a mess. My teens wanted to put on the confetti and sprinkles. They didn’t want to write on it. So it was up to me. As you can see I didn’t do so well. Thankfully I was able to take a butter knife and scrap it off. We then opted not to write on it and just enjoy decorating it with all the other goodies that came with the cake.
Blank canvas – I could devour this “as is.”
Blue and red icing, yellow and green sprinkles and colorful confetti to decorate your cake with.
Hubby sprinkling on some colorful confetti.
It looks good just like this. But it needs a message. 🙂
Oops! My hand is not very steady.
We removed the text and my son added the green sprinkles.
My daughter added some sunny yellow sprinkles too.
After we decorated the cake we put it back in the freezer to enjoy after dinner. I’m sorry that I neglected to take a picture of a cake slice.
You are not limited to the goodies that come with the cake. You can use your own decorations to decorate your ice cream cake any way you see fit.
I think maybe next time I’ll try those little icing tubes. I might have better hand control with those (I blame my carpal tunnel for not being able to handle it as well).
The Friendly’s Crayola Decorate Your Own Ice Cream Cake is available in a 60 ounce size which is enough to serve 12-15 people (depending on the size of the slices).
The cake retails for $17.99 to $19.99 (depending on the retailer). The Friendly’s Premium Crayola Decorate Your Own Ice Cream Cake is available for purchase in the bakery section of Walmart Supercenters and neighborhood stores nationwide, and will soon be available at all Friendly’s restaurants and at select local grocery stores.
I love this idea! I think it’s wonderful that you can decorate your own ice cream cake for major celebrations, like an anniversary, or something as simple as the loss of a first tooth. You are only limited by your imagination.
“Partnering with Crayola is a perfect fit for Friendly’s,” said John Maguire, President and CEO of Friendly’s. “Whether it’s enjoyed at a birthday party or served as a reward for good grades, together Friendly’s and Crayola have crafted an innovative and delicious ice cream treat that adds an extra amount of fun and creativity to every celebration.”
I especially love that this can be a family affair. Family members, both young and old, can decorate (or help decorate) the ice cream cake. You don’t have to be a skilled artist. Just let you imagination take over. Plus feel free to add your own decorations too (I’m thinking fresh strawberry slices would be SO YUMMY with this ice cream cake).
Look for the Friendly’s Crayola Decorate Your Own Ice Cream Cake at a retailer (mentioned above) near you.

If you had a Friendly’s Crayola Decorate Your Own Ice Cream Cake, what would you use it for? What special occasions would you like to serve it to your family and friends? How do you visualize how you would decorate the cake? Would you use the included goodies or add your own special touches?
