Mark your calendars for April 11th, because National Board Game Day is just around the corner!
When was the last time your family sat around a table without a glowing screen in between you? Nowadays, “gaming” usually means everyone is retreated into their own corners, wearing headsets, and existing in completely different digital worlds. Video games have their place, sure, but they’ve turned play into a solitary sport. We’re losing that old-school magic of looking someone in the eye while you try to outsmart them, the shared laughs over a bad roll, and the actual connection that happens when you’re physically in the same room.
I grew up playing board games with my cousins. I have so many wonderful memories of those times. I also used to play games with my own children. To this day we still joke about how our daughter used to always check at this Little Mermaid game we had.
It’s time to bring the family back together! This April 11th, let’s reclaim the dining room table. Whether you have a toddler who just wants to stack things or a pre-teen who thinks they’re too cool for “bored” games, I’ve rounded up some absolute gems that are guaranteed to get everyone engaged.

Cake-N-Bake Challenge: High-Energy Kitchen Chaos
Brand: Hey Buddy Hey Pal
Best For: Ages 4+
Price: $27.99 (Available at Amazon & Barnes & Noble)
If your kids are obsessed with those high-stakes cooking competition shows, they are going to lose their minds over Cake-N-Bake Challenge. This isn’t a “sit quietly and wait your turn” kind of game; it’s a frantic, colorful race to build the perfect cake.

You’re using these surprisingly satisfying foam cake slices (I love the different textures) and icing cards to match a specific recipe. But here’s the kicker: the “Special Recipe” cards will absolutely ruin your day in the best way possible. You might find yourself forced to bake with only one hand or dealing with a “Candle Thief” who’s trying to snatch your victory. It’s fast, it’s loud, and it’s a fantastic way to work on those motor skills and color matching without it feeling like “learning.” Plus, there’s a real trophy-style win when you collect those six candle cards.
I have children in a variety of ages at work (currently from 5-10 years old). This game works well for the younger ones, and I love how they don’t need a grown up with them in order to understand the game. They even play with it as a toy, using it along with the play foods we keep at our site.

Hansel & Gretel’s Candy Adventure: A Brain-Boosting Fairytale
Brand: SmartToys and Games
Best For: Ages 5–8
Price: $27.99 (Launching Spring 2026 at Amazon & Specialty Stores)
If you’re looking for a way to sharpen those young minds while keeping them glued to a story instead of a tablet, Hansel & Gretel’s Candy Adventure is a game for you. Dropping just in time for the Spring 2026 season, this isn’t your average board game. This game is truly hands on because it’s a sliding puzzle that turns critical thinking into a rescue mission.
The goal is simple but addictive: players must navigate the Witch’s enchanted garden by sliding puzzle pieces to build a safe path for the siblings. It’s a brilliant way to build hand-eye coordination and spatial reasoning. With 60 different challenges ranging from easy-peasy to “okay, let me think about this,” the game grows alongside your child.

What really sets this apart is the immersion. It includes a high-quality, beautifully illustrated picture book that retells the classic fairytale with a modern, kid-friendly twist. It’s the ultimate “quiet time” activity that encourages kids to slow down, plan their moves, and solve problems through trial and error. It’s rare to find a game that’s this educational while still feeling like a magical adventure.
I know this is not “technically” a board game everyone can play together, but it is a game that helps to “unplug” for a while. You and your child can even challenge each other to see who can figure out the puzzle challenge the fastest.

Pokémon Trainer Expert: The Ultimate Trivia Showdown
Brand: Ultra PRO Entertainment
Best For: Ages 6+
Price: $34.99 (Available at ultrapro.com & Walmart)
Got a Pokémon fan in the house?
I’ll be honest, I don’t know anything about Pokémon. My kids were never into it growing up. I knew of Pokémon, but that is about it. My “work kids” are obsessed with Pokémon and still play the card game against each other.
Pokémon Trainer Expert takes the “Who’s that Pokémon?” vibe to a whole new level. This is an interactive electronic game that handles the “refereeing” for you, which is a huge plus for parents.
The game features a double-sided board and two different modes: Beginner and Expert. The device that comes with it gives you clues and have to guess which Pokémon is hiding. The faster you guess, the more points you rack up.

Here is a brief video of the game I took.
This game can be played with up to four players, but it also works as a solo challenge if your kid wants to sharpen their skills for the next family game night. It’s a brilliant way to turn that screen-based obsession into a social, competitive experience.
My “work kids” play with this game often. Even the younger ones play with it.

Spy X Family – Search for Seasons: A Fresh Twist on a Classic
Brand: KessCo
Best For: Ages 8+
Price: $14.99 (Available at Amazon & Target)
Search for Seasons takes the classic mechanics of a memory game and adds some much-needed strategy and flavor. It’s based off the program Spy X Family. I personally have never heard of this before, but some of my “work kids” have.

The game is simple enough. You try to match the Forger family’s outfits to complete sets, all while dodging the dreaded “Tonitrus Bolts” (trust me, you don’t want those). It’s not just about flipping cards; you get extra points for matching the right outfits with the right seasons, adding a layer of depth that keeps older kids (and adults) actually interested. It’s compact, affordable, and honestly, the art style is so cool it makes for a great gift for any anime fan.
By choosing to put down the controllers and pick up a deck of cards or a sliding puzzle, you’re doing more than just “playing a game.” You’re establishing a family tradition that builds teamwork and creates lasting memories. This April 11th, let’s trade the headsets for high-fives and celebrate the simple, powerful joy of being together. Whether it’s a fast-paced baking challenge or a strategic Pokémon showdown, the goal is the same: bringing the family back to the table, one turn at a time.
What games will you be playing together on April 11th?
