Every home will have windows, and they’re an element of your property that you can definitely improve. Over time, your windows might look old and worn down, meaning they could do with a renovation. Doing this will have two main positive benefits for you: you’ll improve the way your house looks and you can also increase its resale value.
Overall, these are two massive things you shouldn’t take for granted. The question is, how do you renovate your windows? Or, what are the options you can look at? Here are three ideas that make a huge difference and can be used together or separately to give your windows a new look:
Change the window style
Did you know there are eight different types of windows installed in homes up and down the country? To you or I, a window is a window; what does it mean if they have different styles? Well, this refers to the way the window is installed, along with the window frame styles themselves. Now, two of the window styles aren’t really relevant when talking about a window renovation. These are skylights and transoms – a skylight is often installed in the roof, while a transom is a window above a doorway. You can’t take your existing windows and change their style to either of these.
Instead, you’ll have to choose from the following:
- Casement
- Tilt & Turn
- Sash
- Sliding
- Bay
- Bow
Each of these options is designed in a way that changes how the window opens, as well as how it sits in your home. Swapping from one design to another is a fantastic way to renovate your windows and change the style of your home. You can learn more about all these types if you want to see what they look like and how they differ from one another.
Another great option to consider are PVC outdoor shutters to add some interest to your home’s outdoor décor.
Change the window frame
Alternatively – or additionally – you can alter your window frames. This is a brilliant renovation idea if you’re happy with the style of your windows, but you feel the frames are letting you down. The current frames could be worn down or covered in mold, making your entire house look and feel a lot worse than it is.
When it comes to window frame options, these are the most common:
- uPVC
- Aluminum
- Timber
uPVC is probably the best option overall because it is durable, energy-efficient and affordable. You can also get it in a very wide range of colors, which is perhaps what attracts most people to it. Sometimes, changing old uPVC windows into new ones of a different color is all you need to do to renovate your windows.
Aluminum windows are more durable than uPVC, but they are more expensive. You also don’t get them in as many colors, but they can be installed a lot thinner than many other window frame options. Therefore, they change the entire look of your windows with thinner frames and more glass.
Timber frames are more traditional and do provide a unique look to your home. However, they carry the greatest risk of rot or mold, so aren’t that widely recommended by anyone. Instead, you’re more likely to upgrade old timber frames to one of the options above.
You can get fiberglass or composite window frames as well, though both are pretty rare because they are considerably more expensive than uPVC.
Change the window coverings
Lastly, you can opt to change the window coverings to give your windows a bit of a renovation. Again, this can be done alongside one or both of the previous ideas, or it can be done all by itself. It really depends on the state of your current windows and what you think will be the best idea for your home.
There are plenty of window coverings to choose from, but they usually fall into these three categories:
- Curtains
- Blinds
- Shutters
Blinds and shutters are perhaps the more modern idea for window coverings, and they have lots of benefits. There are also different types of blinds and shutters, but you can read more about that elsewhere. In fact, this is why they are both popular options when renovating windows as you can choose so many styles or installations that transform the way your windows look. Curtains are still stylish and have a lot of versatility – and to be honest, you can use a combination of both throughout your home. Some windows can have blinds, some shutters and some curtains; why not?
So, there you go, three ideas that make a huge difference to your home and can help you renovate your windows. As mentioned already, feel free to use all three ideas together or select the ones you think are ideal for your property.
