My natural hair color and style (L) and my hair colored and blow dried (R)
I’m a simple person. I don’t wear a lot of make-up. The easier the better. I also mostly let my hair air dry and add some product to help with the frizzies.
I own a variety of hair tools, but I mostly use my hair dryer and a smaller curler. I use my hair dryer to speed up the drying process, and to help style my hair when I feel like changing up my natural hair look. I use the curler to help add some bounce to my naturally wavy hair.
I’ve always ASSUMED that hair care tools are pretty much the same. Take for example the hair dryer. You turn it on and it blows hot air. That’s pretty much it’s function. I don’t see why people would spend a lot of money on a hair dryer if they all do the same thing. Cheaper ones just don’t last as long as their pricier counterparts.
That is what I USED to think about hair dryers. Then I experienced Ya-MAN’s Spa Styler Blow Dry & Scalp Massage. Wow! I couldn’t be more wrong about hair dryers all doing the same thing.
Here is a little background on the brand.
Founded in 1978, YA-MAN is a global beauty brand that blends Japanese rituals with modern scientific innovations. Led by CEO Kimiyo Yamazaki, a leading voice in the Asian beauty industry, the multi-million-dollar company embarks on a new chapter of invention since its founding by the late Yukiteru Yamazaki. The product line includes skincare, cosmetics, and beauty devices that have revolutionized the industry and redefined the concept of beauty. The latest releases include the Spa Styler Blow Dry & Scalp Massage, the Spa Styler Straight & Wave, and the Deep Moist Repair Treatment. The trio of new products marks a continuation of YA-MAN’s long-standing tradition of developing groundbreaking products, such as Japan’s first high-frequency epilator and heated RF electric shaver, influencing a new generation of consumers to beauty tech reimagined.
I was sent the Spa Styler Blow Dry & Scalp Massage hair dryer to review.
This has to be the “Rolls Royce” of hair dryers.
I’ll admit at first I wasn’t expecting much more than your usual hair dryer. After all, how many “bells and whistles” could it possibly have?
First let me tell you about the design.
This hair dryer is small compared to others I have owned (currently and in the past). But, a lot of great things come in small packages, such as me. I’m shorty. LOL!
I should mention it comes in three colors – white, gold and slate gray.
The hair dryer is lightweight, which I appreciate. I have Carpal Tunnel in both hands/wrists, and sometimes holding things bothers my hands. I also have a wonky shoulder and I can’t raise my right arm as high as my left one.
The design is very modern looking. I love the design.
The hair dryer has a very nice, thick cord too. I wouldn’t think I’d notice a detail like that, but I did right from the start.
In the box you’ll find attachments. One is the scalp massager and the other is to help direct the hair to a more specific location rather than a larger area on your head.
I hate calling this a hair dryer. This is more than your average hairy dryer – much more.
There are different heating functions, as well as three speeds, found on the “neck” of the hair dryer. One is for heat and the other is for cool air. Cool air is great to help “set” your hair style. Cold air helps to set and sooth your hair’s cuticle and helps to give your hair some shine. Since heat is very damaging to your hair, drying with a cooler stream of air is healthier for your hair.
The cool air function on this dryer is OUTSTANDING. So much so that I can see myself using it to cool myself off on a hot summer day. It’s so refreshing! I’ve had hair dryers with a cool function, but never like this.
This dryer offers a faster drying time, which I haven’t noticed yet, but I also haven’t dried my hair fully with it yet. I have been using it to help my hair dry quicker than air drying and to help set my curls/waves.
This device also helps to eliminate static. I didn’t know that prior to using it, but after I was researching the product more for my post I realized that yes indeed. I haven’t had any known issues with static since using this device. I often have static, especially this time of year. There is something about wearing my coat that makes my hair staticky. I honestly haven’t noticed any static lately. I am assuming I can thank the Ya-MAN for it.
Up to now what I’ve talked about makes this a far superior hair drying device. Now for the “cherry”, or should I say “cherries” on top of the sundae.
The Ya-MAN Spa Styler has red light therapy! Red light therapy is used to help prevent hair loss. What I found from a study done by the National Library of Medicine;
The effect of 650-nm red light on ex vivo hair follicles and the transcriptome set which implicates the role of red light in promoting hair growth and reversing of miniaturization process of AGA were identified.
In layman’s terms they found that red light can promote hair growth and minimize hair loss.
I am not a scientist. I cannot verify these claims personally or professionally, but considering I lose my hair at alarming amounts, I am more than willing to try anything, including red light therapy, to help aid in minimizing hair loss and hopefully promoting hair growth.
I have also found that Asian beauty products are often really effective. I use a few Asian beauty products that I swear by and I am a forever customer.
Now for the spa therapy. This one is interesting.
There is an attachment for the Ya-MAN Spa Styler for a scalp massage. It’s soft and rubbery, so don’t worry about using something hard that might scratch your skin.
The first time I tried the massage option I thought it was very weird. It sends a pulsating vibration on to your scalp, and moving the device around our help helps with massaging the scalp. I wasn’t too keen about it, but, for my review I knew I had to try it a few more times to form my final opinion.
Once you get used to the peculiar feeling it’s not bad at all. I think it’s because most people have never had a scalp massage before, especially with something that vibrates, so it’s a feeling we have to get accustomed to. Once you do, it’s rather enjoyable.
People pamper their nails, and feet, and they get massages on their body. Why shouldn’t our scalps get a little TLC too?
I can praise this device all day long. I honestly don’t have any negative things to say about it. The only, and I do mean ONLY downside for me personally is the price. It has a $299 price tag. For many people that might be a bit too pricey for their budgets, but if you are looking to splurge on something (you deserve to splurge on yourself from time to time) and/or you have the means for it, I would highly recommend the Ya-MAN Spa Styler Blow Dry & Scalp Massager.
