Upcoming Movies for 2019 from Disney, Marvel, Pixar, DisneyNature and Lucas Films

Can you believe it’s almost a month since Christmas? January 2019 is almost over. Before you know it we’ll be planning for Memorial Day weekend.

I’m a big fan of movies (in case you haven’t noticed from all my movie reviews). My husband and I love to go out on dates and most of the time we go and see a movie. We prefer to go to matinees so that the theater is less crowded. We also wait to see movies until they have been out for at least two weeks, that way the theater is not as crowd.

Here are some upcoming movies for 2019 that you might be interested in.

March 9, 2019 – CAPTAIN MARVEL (Marvel Studios)

Marvel Studios’ CAPTAIN MARVEL opens on March 8, 2019 in U.S. theaters.

I know A LOT of Marvel fans are super excited to see this film Even the kids I work with are talking about how they cannot wait to see Captain Marvel.

From the trailer I’ve seen (above), this film looks A-W-E-S-O-M-E.

March 29, 2019 – DUMBO (Walt Disney Studios)

#Dumbo

From Disney and visionary director Tim Burton, the all-new grand live-action adventure “Dumbo” expands on the beloved classic story where differences are celebrated, family is cherished and dreams take flight. Circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) enlists former star Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) and his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. But when they discover that Dumbo can fly, the circus makes an incredible comeback, attracting persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton), who recruits the peculiar pachyderm for his newest, larger-than-life entertainment venture, Dreamland. Dumbo soars to new heights alongside a charming and spectacular aerial artist, Colette Marchant (Eva Green), until Holt learns that beneath its shiny veneer, Dreamland is full of dark secrets.

Directed by Tim Burton (“Alice in Wonderland,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”) from a screenplay by Ehren Kruger (“Ophelia,” “Dream House”), and produced by Justin Springer (“TRON: Legacy”), Kruger, Katterli Frauenfelder (“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” “Big Eyes”) and Derek Frey (“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” “Frankenweenie”).

DUMBO flies into theaters on March 29, 2019.

Dumbo is one of the Disney films that ALWAYS makes me cry – ALWAYS! I cannot watch the part where Dumbo’s mom is taken away from him. I also cannot listen to the song “Baby Mine”  without getting all misty-eyed.

Disney has done an incredible job turning beloved animated films into live action films. I’m excited to see how they do with Dumbo, especially because Dumbo is one of my favorite Disney films (and I happen to love elephants).

April 17, 2019 – PENGUINS (Disneynature)

#DisneynaturePenguins

Disneynature’s all-new feature film “Penguins” is a coming-of-age story about an Adélie penguin named Steve who joins millions of fellow males in the icy Antarctic spring on a quest to build a suitable nest, find a life partner and start a family. None of it comes easily for him, especially considering he’s targeted by everything from killer whales to leopard seals, who unapologetically threaten his happily ever after. From the filmmaking team behind “Bears” and “Chimpanzee,” Disneynature’s “Penguins” opens in theaters nationwide in time for Earth Day 2019.

Disneynature’s PENGUINS opens in theaters on April 17, 2019.

I’m a big fan of the DisneyNature films. I have yet to see one that I didn’t truly love. Not only are they visually stunning, but they also are very educational.

I plan on seeing this in the movie theater. I enjoy seeing DisneyNature films on the big screen.

April 26, 2019 – AVENGERS: ENDGAME (Marvel Studios)

#AvengersEndgame

Marvel Studios hasn’t released many details about this sequel to Avengers: Infinity War.

I know A LOT of people are super anxious to see this film to find out what happened to their favorite Marvel characters. I’m one of those people. I have to see if they are all ready dead, or if there is a way to bring them all back alive.

May 24, 2019 – ALADDIN (Walt Disney Studios)

#Aladdin

A thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic, “Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and Genie who may be the key to their future. Directed by Guy Ritchie (“Sherlock Holmes,” “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.”), who brings his singular flair for fast-paced, visceral action to the fictitious port city of Agrabah, “Aladdin” is written by John August (“Dark Shadows,” “Big Fish”) and Ritchie based on Disney’s “Aladdin.” The film stars Will Smith (“Ali,” “Men in Black”) as the larger-than-life Genie; Mena Massoud (“Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan”) as the charming scoundrel Aladdin; Naomi Scott (“Power Rangers”) as Jasmine, the beautiful self-determined princess; Marwan Kenzari (“Murder on the Orient Express”) as Jafar, the powerful sorcerer; Navid Negahban (“Legion”) as the Sultan concerned with his daughter’s future; Nasim Pedrad (“Saturday Night Live”) as Dalia, Princess Jasmine’s free-spirited best friend and confidante; Billy Magnussen (“Into the Woods”) as the handsome and arrogant suitor Prince Anders; and Numan Acar (“The Great Wall”) as Hakim, Jafar’s right-hand man and captain of the palace guards.

“Aladdin” is produced by Dan Lin (“Sherlock Holmes”) and Jonathan Eirich (“Death Nate”) with Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner Marc Platt (“La La Land”) and Kevin De La Noy (“The Dark Knight Rises”) serving as executive producers. Eight-time Academy Award winning composer Alan Menken (“Beauty and the Beast,” “The Little Mermaid”) provides the score, which includes new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and Oscar-winning lyricists Howard Ashman (“Little Shop of Horrors”) and Tim Rice (“The Lion King”) and includes two new songs written by Menken and Oscar and Tony Award-winning songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (“La La Land,” “Dear Evan Hanson”). The film, which was shot on practical stages in London and on location amidst the stunning desert vistas of Jordan, has a talented creative team helping to bring Agrabah to life, including: director of photography Alan Stewart (“The Commuter”), production designer Gemma Jackson (“Game of Thrones”) and costume designer Michael Wilkinson (“American Hustle”).

ALADDIN opens in U.S. theatres nationwide May 24, 2019.

Just like with Dumbo, I am excited to see this beautiful animated film come to life. I’m also looking forward to seeing how Will Smith does as the genie, which was voiced by the late Robin Williams. Will Smith seems like an odd choice, but who knows, he might totally “own” this role.

June 21, 2019 – TOY STORY 4 (Disney·Pixar)

#ToyStory4

Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called “Forky” to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy. Directed by Josh Cooley (“Riley’s First Date?”) and produced by Jonas Rivera (“Inside Out,” “Up”) and Mark Nielsen (associate producer “Inside Out”).

Disney·Pixar’s TOY STORY 4 ventures to U.S. theaters on June 21, 2019.

On one of our first dates my husband took me to see Toy Story (the one that started it all). He even had a Buzz and Woody dolls. He had them to “collect” (keep on a shelf to look at, not touch), but his many nieces had other plans for them. They loved playing with them. So he let the kids have them.

Funny story.. when we were dating we wrote up a “contract” that we’d be together for 99 years. We had Buzz and Woody “sign” our contract. To this day we still have it and we joking count down how many years are left on the contract (77 years left).

July 19, 2019 – THE LION KING (Walt Disney Studios)

#TheLionKing

Director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journey’s to the African savannah where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother–and former heir to the throne-has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his. The all-star cast includes Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon, “The Lion King” utilizes pioneer filmmaking techniques to bring these treasured characters to life in a whole new way.

THE LION KING roars into theatres on July 19, 2019.

This is another Disney film that I love. Actually, I LOVE this film. It’s another one of those “tear jerker” Disney film’s where it’s impossible for me to watch it without crying, but I power through because this is such a beautiful movie – both the story and the animation.

I LOVE how adorable Simba is in this film. I have a feeling there will be a lot of Lion King merchandise available because kids will want to have their own lions.

I met the artist who drew Scar in the film, Andreas Deja, during a press junket for Disney. He drew me Scar and autographed it for me. I keep it hanging above my desk. I love it!

I bet this film is going to look breathtaking on the big screen. This is another film that I must see in theaters because I know seeing it on the big screen will be an incredible experience.

August 9, 2019 – ARTEMIS FOWL (Walt Disney Studios)

#ArtemisFowl

Disney’s “Artemis Fowl,” based on the beloved book by Eoin Colfer, is a fantastical, spellbinding adventure that follows the journey of 12-year-old genius Artemis Fowl, a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he seeks to find his father who has mysteriously disappeared. With the help of his loyal protector Butler, Artemis sets out to find him, and in doing so uncovers an ancient, underground civilization—the amazingly advanced world of fairies. Deducing that his father’s disappearance is somehow connected to the secretive, reclusive fairy world, cunning Artemis concocts a dangerous plan—so dangerous that he ultimately finds himself in a perilous war of wits with the all-powerful fairies.

“Artemis Fowl” is directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars Ferdia Shaw, Lara McDonnell, Tamara Smart, Nonzo Anozie, with Josh Gad, and Judi Dench. Judy Hofflund and Branagh are producing with Angus More Gordon and Matthew Jenkins serving as executive producers. Conor McPherson wrote the screenplay.

Disney’s ARTEMIS FOWL opens in U.S. theaters on August 9, 2019.

Admittedly I don’t know much about this film. I have seen the books in the bookstore, but I have never purchased one to read.

The trailer looks interesting. In fact, I was contemplating purchasing one of the books to read, just so I can get an idea of what this film is about.

November 22, 2019 – FROZEN 2 (Walt Disney Animation Studios)

Arendelle heats up in 2019 when Anna, Elsa, Kristoff and Olaf return to the big screen in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Frozen 2,” the much-anticipated follow-up to 2013’s Oscar®-winning “Frozen”—the highest grossing animated film of all time. Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad reprise their roles, while Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, the team behind “Frozen,” return to the directors’ chairs.

FROZEN 2 opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 22, 2019.

Not much is known about the sequel to the insanely popular Frozen movie. And by “insanely popular” I mean that pretty much every child has seen it and can sing along to all of the great songs from the film

Sadly, there is no trailer available. One is coming soon, but I bet it will just be a teaser trailer and not the official trailer (not yet anyway).

December 20, 2019 – STAR WARS: EPISODE IX (Lucasfilm)

NOTHING is known about the final sequel in the popular franchise. Not a single story line has been released. There are not even any on set photos (at least hone that I have seen).

I saw Star Wars: A New Hope in theaters when it was first released. I have been a fan ever since. We even had two cats named after Star Wars characters (Anakin and Padmé). I also have a 4′ Darth Vadar and robotic Yoda “guarding” our front door.

I didn’t really like Star Wars: The Last Jedi, or Rouge One: A Star Wars Story, but all of the other Star Wars films, including Solo, I really loved.

I can’t wait!

Are you excited about any of these upcoming films? Which film (or films) are you most excited to see? Feel free to comment and share your thoughts.

December 25, 2018 – MARY POPPINS RETURNS (Walt Disney Studios)

#MaryPoppinsReturns

In Disney’s “Mary Poppins Returns,” an all new sequel with a fresh sensibility that celebrates the spirit of the original, Mary Poppins is back to help the next generation of the Banks family find the joy and wonder missing in their lives. Emily Blunt (“The Girl on the Train,” “Into the Woods”) stars as the practically-perfect nanny with unique magical skills who can turn any task into an unforgettable, fantastic adventure and Lin-Manuel Miranda (“Hamilton,” “Moana”) plays her friend Jack, an optimistic street lamplighter who helps bring light—and life—to the streets of London. “Mary Poppins Returns” is directed by Rob Marshall (“Into the Woods,” “Chicago”). The screenplay is by David Magee (“Life of Pi”) and the screen story is by Magee & Marshall & John DeLuca (“Into the Woods”) based upon The Mary Poppins Stories by PL Travers. The producers are Marshall, DeLuca and Marc Platt (“La La Land”) with Callum McDougall serving as executive producer and the music is by Marc Shaiman (“Hairspray”) with songs by Shaiman and Scott Wittman (“Hairspray”). The film also stars Ben Whishaw (“Spectre”) as Michael Banks; Emily Mortimer (“Hugo”) as Jane Banks; Julie Walters (“Harry Potter” films) as the Banks’ housekeeper Ellen; with Colin Firth (“The King’s Speech”) as Fidelity Fiduciary Bank’s William Weatherall Wilkins; and Meryl Streep (“Florence Foster Jenkins”) as Mary’s eccentric cousin, Topsy and introduces three new Banks’ children played by Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and newcomer Joel Dawson. Angela Lansbury appears as the Balloon Lady, a treasured character from the PL Travers books and Dick Van Dyke is Mr. Dawes Jr., the retired chairman of the bank now run by Firth’s character.

PL Travers first introduced the world to the no-nonsense nanny in her 1934 children’s book “Mary Poppins.” However, the subsequent adventures of Mary Poppins remained only on the pages of the seven other PL Travers’ books…until now. “Mary Poppins Returns” is drawn from the wealth of material in these additional books. The film takes place in 1930s Depression-era London 24 years after the original film was set. Michael Banks works for the same financial institution that employed his father and still lives at 17 Cherry Tree Lane with his three children, Annabel, John and Georgie and their housekeeper Ellen. Carrying on in her mother’s tradition, Jane Banks campaigns for workers’ rights and provides a helping hand to Michael’s family. When the family suffers a personal loss, Mary Poppins magically re-enters their lives and with Jack’s help, brings joy and wonder back into their home.

So… which film are YOU most excited to see? Comment and tell me. I always love to hear from readers.

Nat Geo Wild 10 Days of Thanksgiving begins November 26, 2015

Thanksgiving-Turkey

Can you believe that this Thursday is Thanksgiving? Where did the time go? It seems like only yesterday we were cranking up the AC and making plans on what we were going to do for summer vacation. Now our thoughts have turned to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, the official start to the holiday season and what do with all of the leftovers from dinner.

After you have stuffed yourself more than then the turkey you just devoured, you’ll probably want to sit back, relax, and watch some great entertainment while your body digests all that yummy goodness. Some people put on football. Others look for something the entire family can enjoy.

Nat Geo WILD has some great programming that kicks off on November 26th (Thanksgiving Day). They are hosting a DisneyNature movie marathon.

I am a huge fan of DisneyNature films. I own most of them (I had to add them to my family’s movie collection). There are a few films I still need to add.

Starting at 1:00 PM (EST) / 12:00 (CST), Nat Geo WILD will host four beautiful DisneyNature films.

Deep Blue – Discover creatures of the deep that most people will never have the opportunity to see up close including majestic whales, adorable penguins, seals, polar bears and some of the weirdest deep sea dwellers you’ll ever see.

I had the opportunity to see this film (screener). Wow! It just blew my mind. Watching Deep Blue made me realize just how itty bitty each person is compared to this ginormous planet we live on.

There are some pretty amazing creatures that call the ocean home. Some I’d like to see up close and others – NEVER! Most especially the deep sea dwellers (where sunlight can’t reach).

There is a section featuring crabs that I found interesting, comical and creepy all at the same time.

whales-tail-1481385

Chimpanzee – This is a delightful film about chimpanzee’s and how they are more like humans than you would believe. They can form close bonds, just like people do. Chimpanzee follows the life of a Oscar, a baby chimp who gets separated by his mother, and who is able to form a deep, loving bond with another (elderly) chimp name Freddy.

The Crimson Wings: Mystery of the Flamingos – This is one of the DisneyNature films that I do not own (yet), nor have I ever seen it. It’s the story about a million crimson-winged flamingos who live, breed and continue the circle of life in a desolate location called Lake Natron in Northern Tanzania. I’m looking forward to finally having the opportunity to see this film. This film came out in between Earth (2007) and Oceans (2009).

Wings of Life – This is the other DisneyNature film that I have not seen yet or own. The film gives viewers and intimate look into the lives of butterflies, bees, hummingbirds and even flowers. I love butterflies. I find them fascinating – especially how Monarch Butterflies migrate. I can’t wait to see this film either.

In case you miss any of the films they will be re-aired later on in the evening.

Friday (November 27, 2015) kicks off Big Cat Week with a line up of amazing programming.

I think all Big Cats (Lions, Tigers, Leopards, Cheetahs…) are beautiful, but I find Tigers especially magnificent.

BCW

Check out the program line up for Big Cat Week.

BIG CAT WEEK

Cougars Undercover

Premieres Friday, Nov. 27, 9/8c

This is the moving story of two mountain lion mothers raising their cubs, each trying to survive the harsh conditions of a bitter winter season outside of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Never-before-seen video captures the playful, intimate and sometimes tragic lives of these two families — part of a groundbreaking study by Panthera’s Teton Cougar Project. This is the most intense study of mountain lions ever conducted in the U.S., and the research raises some key questions. Are these cats the solitary hunters we previously thought? Why is their population dropping in the Rockies? The answers are fascinating and the stunning portrayal of the highs and lows of daily life will keep you glued to the story.

I had the opportunity to screen this special.

I understand that the cats needed to be “tagged” to be studied, but it broke my heart to see them wearing big, bulky collars.

These are amazing creatures, and I am happy that I had the opportunity to learn more about them (their spotted cubs are adorable!). If you like big cats you won’t want to miss this special. Check out the trailer (below).

To finish up this amazing line up of programming, Nat Geo WILD will finish off the 10 Days of Thanksgiving on December 6, 2015 with Wild Yellowstone (9:00 EST/8:00 CST).

Wild Yellowstone

Finishing off Nat Geo WILD’s 10 Days of Thanksgiving with whole new look at Yellowstone, from the producers of “The Art of Flight.” Wild Yellowstone took two years to film and features cutting-edge film making, drone use, time-lapse and infrared technology to capture scenes that we’ve never seen before. The film kicks off a cross-network 100th anniversary celebration of America’s national parks. The series continues on National Geographic Channel with 8 hours of programming throughout 2016. The two-hour event includes a visit in summer and in freezing winter, an extraordinary world of fire and ice, ever changing and always testing its animal inhabitants.

Yellowstone National Park is one of our countries great parks that I would love to visit someday.

There are actually two episodes airing back to back. One is called Frozen Frontier and the other is called Grizzly Summer. I had the opportunity to view both of them.

Warning… you’ll need a cup of hot cocoa (or two!) when watching Frozen Frontier. Brrrr!!! I’m amazed that living creatures can survive such harsh conditions.

yellowstone-national-park-15-1527741

Grizzly Summer does feature a lot of bears, but it also touches upon other creatures that call Yellowstone home. It shows how their lives are in the Spring/Summer months after a long, harsh winter.

I would not recommend either episode for young children. There are several cases of animals being hunted down and killed by other animals for food, fighting and animals eating other animals.

It’s amazing to think that all of this happens in one state park. Yellowstone seems as big as a country – not a park.

These are must see specials. Be sure to mark your calendar or set your Tivo so you don’t miss out.

Movie Review: DisneyNature Monkey Kingdom

DisneyNature Monkey Kingdom

I am a HUGE fan of nature shows. I always have been – even as a little girl. Some people around my age (forty-something) might recall Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. It was a nature show that aired on Sunday nights (if I recall correctly). It was hosted by Marlin Perkins.

Watching that show was a highlight of my week. I love animals and nature. So it comes to no surprise that I am a huge fan of nature films and programming.

One of my favorite series of nature films comes from DisneyNature. You may have seen a few.

  • Earth (2007)
  • The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos (2008)
  • Oceans (2009)
  • Wings of Life (2011)
  • African Cats (2011)
  • Chimpanzee (2012)
  • Bears (2014)

The newest addition to the DisneyNature films is Monkey Kingdom (2015).

DisneyNature Monkey Kingdom Logo

Being a fan of all the DisneyNature films, Monkey Kingdom did not disappoint. It was as spectacular and educational as I knew it would be.

The film is narrated by Tina Fey.

Monkey Kingdom introduces viewers to a group of Toque Macaques monkeys that live in the jungle surrounded by abandoned ruins in Sri Lanka.

This group of monkeys have social class system where those with a high class get to eat at the top of the fig tree where the sweetest, best tasting fruit is. The lower the class the lower down the tree you get to the point where there is hardly any ripened fruit to eat. Then there’s Maya. She is so low down that she can’t even eat off the tree. Instead she has to move around on the ground under the tree hoping to pick up some scraps that were tossed down by the other monkeys.

The alpha male is a monkey named Raja. Just below him are three mean and nasty sisters. The sisters feel that they rule the group (aside from Raja). They feel entitled to everything and will stop at nothing to take whatever it is that they want. They barely work for food. They would rather steal it from another monkey.

A lone monkey, Kumar, makes his way into the group and is smitten with Maya. He gets Maya pregnant and then is chased away by Raja, leaving Maya to take care of their son Kip on her own.

DisneyNature Monkey Kingdom Maya and Kip

Maya does what she can to feed and care for Kip – even putting her life at risk with a huge monitor lizard – just to get food for her son as well as for herself so that she can provide her baby with healthy breast milk.

The sisters have no compassion for Maya’s situation. They steal her food and at one point steal her son.

Poor Maya and Kip. They are destined to remain at the bottom of the fig tree, or are they? Does something happen to change their situation for the better – or worse? To find out you need to pick up a copy of of DisneyNature Monkey Kingdom, now available where movies are sold.

I enjoyed watching this film. Even if there wasn’t a story to be told, I still enjoyed watching the monkeys and other jungle creatures (bears, elephants, mongoose…) and well as taking in the breathtaking scenery.

It’s funny to see how much like human’s these monkeys are. They each have their own personalities too which I find amusing.

I did enjoy the backstory with Maya, Kip and the others. I think that only added to this film.

There were some scenes that might be a little intense for younger viewers, most especially the fight scenes as well as watching the sisters be mean to Maya.

You don’t have to love monkeys to appreciate this film. These are not exactly cute monkeys, but their manerisums and watching them live and play was really fun to watch. They are very comical to watch.

Monkey Kingdom Screen Shot

The Blu-ray also has some bonus features worth checking out;

  • A special thank you from Disneynature
  • Tales from the Kingdom
  • On the set of Monkey Kingdom with Jane Goodall and Wolfgang Dittus
  • Disneynature Monkey Kingdom: The Conservation Story
  • ‘It’s Our World’ music video performed by Jacquie Lee

I always enjoy seeing the “behind the scenes” bonus features. I think you get a better understanding and appreciation for a film when you see all that goes into bringing it to big screen. For this film it meant months in the jungle, chasing around the group of monkeys. It might sound like fun but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to pull it off.

DisneyNature Bears now available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD & FREE Printables

DN Bears

Several months ago I was offered the wonderful opportunity to screen the latest DisneyNature film called Bears.

I am a HUGE fan of DisneyNature films and other documentary-type films about nature and animals. I’m an animal lover. I love all kinds of animals.

DisneyNature Bears documents the summer of one bear family – Sky and her two cubs Amber and Scout.

The film starts off when the young family first awakens from their winter hibernation. All three of of the are starving. Sky is still nursing her cubs but she is running out of fat reserves to produce milk. She needs to eat right away or she won’t be able to feed her cubs.

You would think finding food would be easy enough. It’s not. In fact it’s literally a struggle between life and death.

Sky faces a lot of challenges when it comes to finding food for her family. One of the biggest is other bears, especially two large male bears named Magnus and Chinook who would love to make her babies into one of their meals.

In addition to looking for food Sky also have to keep one step ahead from the male bears who are keeping their eye on the cubs and hope to catch them off guard. Not only that a hungry wolf named Tikaani  is also trying to steal one of the cubs away from Sky when she’s not looking.

The family does face a lot of hardships like lack of food and one of the cubs gone missing and assumed dead. However this film is not all about the struggles the bear family faces. It’s also about the love of a mother for her young.

Many times throughout the film you can witness first hand Sky and her cubs frolicking and enjoying the summer sunshine and warmth. Even though there are dangers lurking around every corner there is a lot new experiences and plenty of playtime to be had too.

I won’t give away the ending, but I will say that it’s a happy one for the beautiful bear family.

Here is the film’s trailer from when the movie was in theaters.

Look for DisneyNatures Bears where ever movies are sold.

This movie is beautiful. Once again DisneyNature has found a way to bring you up close and personal to the world’s most amazing creatures. You get so close to the bears that you can see their individual hairs.

One of the bonus features, How Did They Film That? gives viewers a glimpse into how they were able to acquire some of these amazing shots.

Two other bonus features, Welcome to Alaska and A Guide to Living with Bears also educate viewers on how much went into filming the bears. Keep in mind bears are wild creatures and their behavior is unpredictable. They could have charged the filmmakers at any time during the filming of Bears.

Another bonus feature, one I would recommend you take the time to view, is called The Future of Bears. It features and interview with Dr. Jane Goodall. I found it extremely interesting and very educational.

You can also check out the music video for the song Carry On by Olivia Holt in the bonus feature section too.

I posted more information about this film earlier this year. If you search for DisneyNature Bears in my site’s search box you’ll find more.

Movie Review: Disneynature Bears in theaters today (April 18, 2014)

DisneyNature-Bears-Poster

Are you looking for something fun to do this weekend with your family? Would you want to do something that would help support our national parks? If you answer “yes” to either of these questions you should consider taking the family to see the newest Disneynature film, Bears, which is in theaters today (April 18, 2014).

Disneynature has released other beautiful films including Wings of Life, Chimpanzee, African Cats, Earth, Oceans, The Crimson Wings and of course Bears. Their next film, Monkey Kingdom, swings into theaters next year.

Bears is the story of a mother bear named Sky. She survived the harsh winter in an underground cave along with her two cubs – Amber and Scout. When the snow starts to melt and things begin to thaw out, Sky knows it’s time to take her cubs on an incredibly journey to find food.

It’s true what they say about “survival of the fittest”. Sky soon learns that getting food for her hungry cubs is not as easy as it would seem. She needs to deal with other bears for prime fishing spots, as well as protect her young from hungry bears who would love to gobble them up instead of fish, most especially a HUGE bear named Magus (he’s the “big bully on the block”) and an outcast named Chinook.

Another predator that Sky has to watch out for is a very hungry wolf name Tikanni who is always lurking around the cubs.

Amber and Scout are typical “children” – always getting into mischief, most especially Scout. Amber tends to stick close by her mother’s side.

The family has to struggle and go hungry a lot the time because the world can be a cruel, harsh place – especially for the young. Sadly only half of the bear cubs born survive their first year. Starvation and predators are their worse enemies.

The film is not all about struggling. There are plenty of times where the family finds food – and plenty of it. I don’t want to give away anything but let’s just say it does have a happy ending.

I learned a lot about bears from watching this film. The film shows you the daily life of bears during the course of a few months when the winter snows have melted and the bears needs to eat as much as they can to build up enough fat reserves to survive another long, cold, harsh winter.

Disneynature Bears

It was amazing to see just how much Sky cared for her children. Have you ever heard someone say “don’t mess with mama bear” when referring to a human mom and her children? I have. And it’s true. Don’t mess with a mother bear when it comes to her young. She will fight for them to the death.

It was amazing to see just how much Sky sacrificed for her children. You can tell that there is a lot of love there. People might not think that animals can feel love and other emotions. I believe they can. Sky exhibited a lot of love and devotion towards her children. It was truly amazing to see.

This is a wonderful movie for the whole family. You don’t have to like bears to appreciate this magnificent film. Of course once you see this film you are going to be fans of these big, furry creatures. 🙂

There are a few scenes where bears are fighting. That might be a little intense for very young children. Aside from that the movie is very family friendly. Its rated G. It runs for a little over an hour and a half and is narrated by actor John C. Reilly.

Bears opens in theaters today (April 18, 2014).

Here is the film’s trailer for your enjoyment.

If you see the film during opening week (April 18 – 24, 2014), Disneynature will make a donation, through the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund, to the National Park  Foundation. The foundation helps protect our national parks and the wildlife who calls them home, including bears like Sky, Amber and Scout. I hope you will consider going to see the film during opening week to help support a wonderful organization.

For more information about the National Park Foundation visit www.NationalParks.org.

There are other ways you can help too.

Disneynature Bears plush

The Disney Store is also contributing to the National Park Foundation. For  every plush from the DisneyNature Bear film that is purchased, $1.00 will be  donated to the National Park Foundation (campaign ends May 11, 2014). You can  find the plush bears here – Amber and Scout. You can see my plush Amber at the L.A. Zoo here – Visiting a real life bear at the L.A. Zoo in honor of Disneynature Bears. Scroll down towards the bottom and you’ll see my plush at the zoo. They are adorable and would make a wonderful new “friend” for your child or grandchild.

A company that makes cases for iPads and iPhones created special cases in honor of this film. They are donating 20% of the sale of these cases to the National Parks  Foundation. This is just one more way you can help save bears like Sky, Amber  and Scout and many other wildlife creatures.
