Get a little relief from the stress of the holidays from P&G brands (giveaway ends 1/2/15)

NYC Selfie

Let’s face it, the holiday season is a crazy time of the year. You have to fight for a parking spot at the mall, stand on long lines at the mall to purchase gifts, deal with in-laws, unexpected guests, tinsel all over the place, running out of tape when wrapping gifts, the onslaught of bills… the list goes on and on.

Don’t get me wrong – the holidays are wonderful! I love the holiday season. The good certainly outweighs the bad. I’m simply saying that woven in between all the good times are things you don’t anticipate that can cause a bit of holiday stress. For example, getting a stain on your party dress. Or your dog coming in from the snow and shaking off in the house (wet dog smell is not good). Stress can come in big, or small, “packages”.

P&G brands would like to help take a bit of stress out of your holiday season. As part of their #NYTough campaign, several P&G brands have come together to help make your holiday season a bit merrier (and less messy).

Speaking of #NYTough, I can’t imagine living in the city during the holiday season. New York City is a beautiful place to visit for the holidays, but I couldn’t imagine living there. I have a hard enough time lugging a gallon of milk up six flights of stairs where I live. I can’t imagine trying to carry a dozen bags filled with holiday gifts on the subway or walking several blocks back to your apartment. I couldn’t do it. Not only that, how to do you fit all your family and friends in those itty bitty apartments?

I give plenty of kudos to those who live in New York City. You have to be tough to live there.

P&G has plenty of products that can help make life in the bit city – or the suburbs – a bit easier for the holiday season.

The participating brands include;

bounty

Bounty – You need a strong paper towel to help wipe up holiday spills and messes and keep your home clean for guests. Paper towels are a must in any home. You never know when a mess is going to happen that requires paper towels.

Tide Pods

Tide: Tide Pods – With all those holiday parties you are invited to you want to make sure that you look your best. When you live in an apartment (or condo) and your laundry room is in the basement you appreciate these wonderful little pods. It saves you from having to lug laundry detergent bottles up and down stairs (especially if you don’t have the luxury of an elevator). Just pop a few pods in your pocket when you are heading down to do your laundry

Dawn Ultra

Dawn: Dawn Ultra – The holiday season means a lot of cooking, baking, drinking and celebration. Unfortunately that also means a lot of dishes that need to be washed. A little bit of Dawn Ultra goes long way. One bottle lasts a very long time.

Febreze Air Effects

Febreze: Air Effects – If you plan on having people over for the holidays you want to make sure that your home not only looks good but smells good too. I love Febreze! I use it on a daily basis, especially the fabric refresher.

This holiday season don’t try to tough it out by yourself – let P&G brand help you out and make you #NYTough.

Manhattan as seen from the Hudson River.

I am a “country bumpkin” at heart. I would rather live in a place where deer and cows (or horses) roam freely in my yard rather than city buses and taxi cabs. But that is just me. I know plenty of people who couldn’t see themselves living anywhere other than a big city including one of the biggest cities of them all – New York City.

I think maybe if I was young an single I would enjoy living in the city for a few years, just to get the full New York City experience. New York City is a very exciting place. In fact my mom, before she passed away, talked about getting an apartment in the city so she could spend some time there since the kids were all grown. My mom loved to travel and experience new things. She once took a trip to China for a couple of weeks – by herself! She just decided one day she wanted to go to China and up and left for a couple of weeks.

Our son is looking forward to moving to New York City when he graduates fro high school. Sadly I don’t think he fully comprehends how expensive living in New York City is (he wants to move to Manhattan).

P&G Brands – Febreze, Head & Shoulders, Bounty, Dawn, Tide and Secret – have come together to showcase the struggles that many New Yorkers face on a daily basis and how tough they are to handle it all. The campaign is called #NYTough and it provides New Yorkers with a break from the challenges they deal with on a daily basis with brands that are tough enough to help them live and thrive in the “Big Apple”.

Manhattan (left), Roosevelt Island (right) and I believe that is Queens or the Bronx in the background.

The #NYTough campaign has a series of video interviews hosted by local comedian Michael Che. The videos highlight what is means to be “New York Tough” and invited New Yorkers to share their unique stories.

“I grew up on the lower east side of Manhattan and over the past thirty years, I’ve seen just how tough the city can be,” stated comedian Che. “I jumped at the chance to help share some comic relief with the community through the #NYTough campaign because comedy about New York has always been a part of my routine. It’s been a wild experience getting to interview such a diverse group of people, from taxi drivers and dog walkers to starving artists and retirees, about their own New York tough stories.”

New York City is such a diverse city. There are five boroughs and many different neighborhoods. My family grew up in Brooklyn (except me and my sister) and my husband’s family is from the Bronx. It’s amazing how in NYC you can turn the corner and find yourself in an entirely different neighborhood. We’ve heard so many stories about life in the big city.

My family visits the city often. I don’t know how people deal with all that traffic. Just a minor “fender bender” on the West Side Highway (or Harlem River Drive) can cause backups that go for miles and last for hours. Just the other day going into the city there was traffic on the West Side Highway – bumper to bumper – and we were at a complete standstill. For what should have taken 45 minutes to get to (location) took over an hour and a half – twice as much time.

People EVERYWHERE in Times Square

Even the inner streets of Manhattan can be a driver’s worst nightmare. I don’t know how people navigate those streets. When you toss in people who refuse to obey the street signs (“jaywalkers”), double parked vehicles, truck deliveries and on-going construction – it’s insane!

The noise in some areas of the city can be so loud too. How do you sleep with all that noise going on around you? I go bonkers if there is a cricket in our home let alone listening to people talking, cars honking, sirens and other miscellaneous sounds.

If you don’t like crowds New York City is not the place for you. There are plenty of quiet neighborhoods but when you enter the more “touristy” parts of the city, or the business locations, you can barely move on the sidewalks because there are so many people.

You also have to be rich to live in the city, in my opinion. We once ate at a restaurant and ordered two cheeseburgers, one hamburger and a chef salad plus four sodas and it came to OVER $120! We eat at the same restaurant closer to where we live and would spend half that amount on the same meal.

A few weeks ago we were in the city and spent $12 on two hot dogs, $6 on two bottles of water and $8 on two pretzels. Yikes!

Don’t get e wrong. We love the city. It’s an amazing place. It’s a “one of a kind” place. To me there is no other city like New York City. It’s packed with so much culture, entertainment, education, history and so much more. Yeah, $4 for a pretzel might seem like a lot but when  you are strolling through beautiful Central Park while enjoying that pretzel the price doesn’t matter. Yes, the construction is a nusance, but when you see the end result you know why it was necessary. What the city did to rebuilt after 911 is amazing. We saw “ground zero” a couple of years after 911 and it was nothing but a giant hole in the ground. Now there are amazing buildings and a beautiful memorial and museum.

Central Park.

Sweet Dreams can start in your … laundry room? (giveaway ends 3/14/14) #TuckInTurnOff

Good Night Sleep

If you follow my blog on a regular basis you might recall my post about the new fabric care line from P&G (Procter & Gamble) called the Sweet Dreams Collection. If you happened to have missed that post you can read it here – Can Getting a Good Night’s Sleep Start in the Laundry Room?

The Sweet Dreams Collection consists of a few products from popular brands. Combined they make a great regime to help you and your family fall asleep blissfully.

The Sweet Dreams Collection consists of the following products.

Current Tide Logo 2010

Tide ® plus A touch of Downy™ Sweet Dreams™: Perfect for  sheets, pajamas, and other nighttime fabrics, Tide works to clean fabrics from  things you can see, like dirt—to things you can’t see, like perspiration. This  product includes lavender overtones with gourmand vanilla undertones to create a  calming scent to help soothe you to sleep.

Downy ® UNSTOPABLES® Dreams™: An in-wash scent booster that  allows consumers to control the amount of lavender scent added to each laundry  load. The relaxing lavender scent will last 12 weeks in storage ensuring your  bedtime fabrics can always be ready for bedtime.

Downylogo

Downy Infusions® Sweet Dreams™: A premium liquid fabric  softener with SilkTouch™ to infuse fabrics with a silky softness that makes your  everyday fabrics (and you) feel fabulous. Contains a dual perfume system  with Renewing Scent Pearl Technology that imparts your bedtime fabrics  with a multi-layered lavender scent experience that continues long after your  fabrics have been washed.

BOUNCE_4C_ENG_North America

Bounce ® Sweet Dreams™: Small but mighty— just toss one dryer  sheet in the dryer to soften, freshen, control static, and help repel lint and  hair on bedtime fabrics.

I received most of the products to review (except the Downy Infusions® Sweet Dreams™). Right out of the box I could smell just how amazing the lavender scented products were. The scent was coming from the box of Bounce ® Sweet Dreams™ dryer sheets.

Here is a little tip for you – place a dryer sheet in a garbage can (such as one you would keep by your desk – not in the trash can). The scent will freshen up the area around the garbage can. Mine is next to my desk so I can smell the delightful Sweet Dreams Collection scent while I am working at my desk. I know it’s intended more so for night time use, but I don’t mind. I really love the scent.

The Sweet Dreams Collection works together to infuse a lush, delightful lavender scent into your bedding (sheets, pillow cases, blankets…) as well as your pajamas. The scent surrounds you when you get ready for bed and slip under the covers.

Lavender has been used for many years in aromatherapy because it’s known to relax you. Even doctor’s recommend the use of lavender to patients with sleep issues.

I have a funny little story to share about the Sweet Dreams Collection. My daughter occasionally does the laundry. She had the opportunity to smell the Sweet Dreams Collection after I washed our bedding in it. She liked the scent so much she decided to wash ALL the laundry with it meaning my husband’s work clothes, jeans, tee shirts and even bath towels. She did it because she wanted her clothing to have the lavender scent throughout the day (not just when she went to bed at night).

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Personally I don’t mind (lavender scented towels after a warm shower right before bed time are awesome! You should try it), but it didn’t go over so well with my son.

We were having dinner and my daughter told my husband that she did a few loads of laundry and that she put his clothes on top of his armoire. When she said that it dawned on me that I should have told her not to use the Sweet Dreams Collection products to do the regular laundry. When I asked her which laundry products she used she said “the new stuff” (meaning the Sweet Dreams Collection products). She asked me if that was OK and I told her for future reference we were going to save that for pajamas and bedding.

My son knows about the Sweet Dreams Collection because we had washed all the bedding in it and he was familiar with the scent (he enjoys it). He knows how it relaxes you at night before going to bed.

I can’t remember verbatim what he said but he commented on how he has a hard enough time staying awake in his morning classes and now his clothes are going to smell like his bed and all he’s going to want to do is go to sleep. LOL. 🙂 Let’s hope that doesn’t happen.

The products are perfectly OK to use on your regular laundry but I would recommend saving it for it’s intended purpose (bedding and pajamas). Using it to wash bath towels is OK because a lot of people like to take a bath or shower before going to bed and soft, lavender scented towel would be perfect to use right before bedtime.

I cannot rave enough about the scent. You have to experience it for yourself in order to truly appreciate it.

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

We have used Tide ®, Downy ® and Bounce ® products for as long as I can remember, so we know how well they work. They work well together and leave your bedding oh-so-soft and clean. There is nothing more inviting then a bed made with soft and snuggly sheets and blankets. It’s hard to resist not hoping into bed right away. I might also add that the softness and the intoxicating scent also make it hard to get out of bed. Ha Ha.

Will I continue to use P&G’s Sweet Dreams Collection? Absolutely! Without a doubt.

Look for the Sweet Dreams Collection on a store shelf near you.

Can getting a good night’s sleep start in the laundry room? #TuckInTurnOff

Sweet Dreams Collection

Earlier this week I told you about a fun event I was going to attend in New York City (Grand Central Station Terminal) for the fabulous new Sweet Dreams Collection as well as to learn a bit about how I can get a better night’s sleep, as well as my family. Sadly I was unable to attend. To make a long story short my husband was in agonizing pain (to the point he was in tears) and I had to rush him to Urgent Care. After a long wait and some x-rays they sent us on our not-so-merry-way with only a sling and told us to see an Orthopedist. As much as I wanted to go to New York City for the event I couldn’t leave my husband in pain. He was also unable to drive himself to the doctor so I had to stay home and take care of him. Turns out he has Bursitis in his shoulder and possible some Tendonitis too. It’s been days and he’s still in excruciating pain. He needs to go back for a cortisone shot.

Anyway… that is why I couldn’t attend the event. I’m very disappointed too. It looked like fun and I was looking forward to spending the afternoon in the city with my husband. We rarely have any “couples time”.

Did you know that March 2nd – March 9th is National Sleep Foundation Sleep Awareness Week?

I have to admit that I often have a hard time falling to sleep at night. I can’t seem to “turn off” my brain. I keep re-hashing the events of the day and plotting out my “game plan” for the next day. I also do something you are not supposed to do before retiring for the night – watch TV. Ideally you should turn off electronics (TV, Cellphone, Tablet….) at least 30 minutes before going to bed. This gives your mind time to “disconnect” and it helps you to fall asleep faster.

My husband and I also have to sleep on a sofa bed, which is NOT the most comfortable thing to sleep on. We end up tossing and turning all night. And since our “bedroom” is actually the living room we are also at the mercy of our kids and pets who can be very noisy, especially on their way into the kitchen to make breakfast or get a drink of water.

Many doctor’s agree that your sleep environment plays a huge roll in how well you fall asleep and stay asleep. That is why P&G launched a line of products that are going to help you to create the most blissful bedtime experience you have ever had. The product line is called the Sweet Dream Collection. The product line has become the official products of The National Sleep Foundation (NSF).

The Sweet Dreams Collection

The Sweet Dreams Collection is a suite of products  formulated with ingredients to clean, soften and freshen all your bedtime fabrics, from your bed linens to your pajamas, helping to create an ideal sleep environment so that you can relax in order to fall asleep. The Sweet Dreams Collections includes:

The products were introduced this past week in New York City, in Grand Central Terminal. Attending the event were to people who also suffer from having a hard time falling asleep at night – celebrity physician and wellness expert, Dr. Ian Smith and lifestyle expert Jeannette Kaplun, who also happens to be a busy mom.

Dr. Ian Smith and lifestyle expert Jeannette Kaplun

Dr. Ian Smith and lifestyle expert Jeannette Kaplun

Dr. Ian Smith knows all too well how today’s technology is one of the biggest factors in our ability to get a good night’s sleep.

“It’s hard to unwind and turn off your mind at the end of the day, especially when technology like laptops and smartphones are so readily accessible and easy to use in bed,” said Dr. Smith. “In fact, the use of electronics before bedtime is one of the biggest issues doctors notice in patients who struggle to relax in order to fall asleep. That’s why I recommend patients start with simple solutions I’ve tried myself, like turning off electronics at least 30 minutes before bedtime and creating an ideal sleep environment including washing linens and pajamas in the Sweet Dreams Collection.”

I knew that electronics were a bit factor in people having a hard time falling asleep but never in a million years would I think that my bed linens and pajamas would have a part in it too.

Admittedly we just lump our laundry together. I would never think that the products we use on our bedding and pajamas could also play a role in how well we sleep.

I’m sure most people can relate to how wonderful it feels when you hope into bed with a snuggly blanket. The Sweet Dreams Collection brings that same sense of joy to all your bedding and night clothes. Who knew a good night’s sleep could start in the laundry room.

It was found that 100% of doctor’s polled agree that an appropriate sleeping environment is critical to aid a person’s ability to relax so they can fall asleep. Half of these physicians recommend that their patients use a lavender scented product at bedtime (such as a room or fabric spray) to help them relax so they can fall asleep. I have personally used lavender to help me relax. I have several lavender scented products including hand soap, lotion, essential oil and even a lavender scented heating pad. I have used them all in the past to help me to relax and unwind. The Sweet Dreams Collection takes it one step further – they infuse the comforting and relaxing scent directly into your bedding and pajamas. Not only that it makes everything notably soft and snuggly. They make your bed so “inviting” that you can’t wait to hop into bed at night.

The event in New York City was a way of introducing the product line to the media and the public. I love how they decorated the event with a beautiful bed (oh how I wish I could dive into that at night). I also love the floral and moss-like touches. They made the whole set up very “dreamy”. 🙂

Check out some photos from the event. I really wish I was there!

It’s funny that the event was held in Grand Central Terminal which is probably one of the busiest places NYC and the last place I would think about sleep.

It looks like guests got to take home some great goodie bags too.

I received the Sweet Dreams Collection to review. I’m going to share my review and a giveaway in another post. I will say this… the products smell out of this world wonderful! They are infused with lavender. As I mentioned lavender is often recommended by doctors. It’s aroma helps people to relax and unwind which is essential to falling so sleep.

The new product line also leaves your bedding and pajamas wonderfully soft and inviting. You may never want to get out of bed again! LOL!

Daylight Savings Time is fast approaching which means an extra hour of sunlight. That is a good thing and not-so-good thing. Aside from having more daylight to do things, you also have a disruption in your sleeping pattern and that extra hour can reap havoc on you when you need to get to sleep.

Sleep is VERY important to good health. That is why P&G has also created the “Tuck in. Turn Off.” Tour. Together with Dr. Ian Smith and Jeanette Kaplun, the brand will be spreading the word about how a good night’s sleep starts in the laundry and sharing other great tips to help consumers get a better night’s sleep.

The event in New York City was just the first. On March 7, 2014 the tour will travel to Los Angeles, California. That event will take place from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM (PST) at The Grove. Experts will be on hand to share tips and discuss how to get a better night’s sleep with the Sweet Dreams Collection.

They are also encouraging consumers to take the “Tuck in. Turn Off.” pledge at www.TuckInTurnOff.com. It’s easy to do and you get rewarded with free goodies including valuable tips for a good night’s sleep. You can also see what others have to say using the hashtag #TuckInTurnOff.

American figure skater and Olympic bronze medalist Gracie Gold shows off her COVERGIRL patriotic nails after her manicure at the P&G Family Home.

Wow, it feels like the Olympic Winter Games just started, not a few days away from ending! For the last three weeks, Proctor & Gamble (P&G), a proud sponsor of several U.S. Olympic medalists, including Meryl Davis, Charlie White, Noelle Pikus Pace, Jamie Anderson and Nick Goepper, has been in Sochi helping the Olympians and their families feel at home in the P&G Family Home. One of the cool things they offer at the Home is the P&G Salon where Olympians, their moms and other family members can go to get their hair washed and styled at the Pantene Studio. They can also get their hair braided with Team USA colored ribbons to help cheer on our team.  What a fun idea. Additionally, clean shaves are available to men in the Salon courtesy of Braun.

So much has happened  since the start of the Games from figure skaters like Olympic bronze medalist Gracie Gold stopping by to get a pre-competition patriotic manicure at the COVERGIRL studio, to freestyle slope skiing bronze medalist Nick Goepper celebrating his win with his mom courtesy of Tide. Sounds like a fun time in Sochi!

Noelle Pikus Pace, a Pampers ambassador, stopped by the Home with her family to thank her mom and family for their support as she trained before the Games. Their support paid off as she placed second in the skeleton final and won a silver medal! Noelle is a truly unique working mom of two young children.  She has successfully juggled her roles as wife, mother and athlete while overcoming her own obstacles, including a broken leg in 2005 that led to a challenging comeback.  Noelle is truly an inspiration.

I think it’s great that P&G is celebrating Team USA and offering so many wonderful services to the Olympians and their families to help make their stay in Sochi more comfortable and more like “home.”

I don’t travel frequently, and I’m never gone for more than a few days, but I know how important it is to have specific products on hand to make my stay more enjoyable and comfortable. It’s nice to know that P&G is doing its part to bring a little bit of home to the 2014 Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games for the families of Olympians. I’m sure that they appreciate that very much.

Composite Shot lo-res

There are less than 100 days until the start of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. It’s hard to believe that two years have already passed since the 2012 Summer Olympics. The Winter Olympics will be held in Sochi, Russia. I have never even heard of Sochi until now.

Do you plan on watching the Olympics? Do you have a favorite sport you enjoy watching? Is there a particular athlete you’ll be anxious to see in the upcoming Olympics?

I couldn’t imagine what it would feel like to have a child competing in the Olympics. I’m overjoyed and proud of my kids when they bring home a good grade, let alone become a world class athlete. That much be an incredible feeling.

What does it take to raise an Olympic hopeful?

Procter & Gamble (P&G) is a Worldwide Olympic Partner. They are highlighting what it takes to raise an Olympian with a new series of films called Raising An Olympian. These films celebrate the journeys of the athletes and their moms and their journey to the Olympics.

Several world-class U.S. athletes, including their mothers, have joined its global family of athletes & moms. Athletes like Lindsey Vonn, Evan Lysacek, Julie Chu and Taylor Lipsett are amoung them. These athletes are supported by P&G brands such as Olay®, Cover Girl®, Pantene®, Crest® and Bounty®.

I think its wonderful that these moms get to join their children on their quest for the Olympic dream.

Starting in January (2014) you’ll start to see new packaging and advertising with P&G Olympic Games. I’m sure my kids will be looking for Olympic souvenirs of some sort. Maybe I’ll try and find them Olympic shirts or hoodies. I’m sure they will like something like that.

I mentioned earlier in the post about the Raising An Olympian films. There will be 28 films globally and 10 U.S. films.

Each of the films help bring to life the daily lessons that all moms teach their kids (not just future Olympians) from their first steps to their first failures. The films focus on the unconditional love that moms give to their children, no matter what. Olympic Winter hopefuls Lindsey Vonn, Evan Lysacek, Julie Chu and Taylor Lipsett each have their own film. You can check out their films at RaisingAnOlympianFilms.com.

The first four films feature;

  • Lindsey Vonn (Alpine Ski Racer) and mom Lindy Lund
  • Evan Lysacek (Figure Skater) and mom Tanya Lysacek
  • Julie Chu (Ice Hockey) and mom Miriam Chu
  • Taylor Lipsett (Sled Hockey) and mom Cheryl Lipsett

Here is one of the films that features Olympic hopeful Lindsey Vonn (Alpine Ski Racer) and her mom Lindy Lund. To see the other three films please visit the YouTube channel listed above.

As a mom I do give my children 100% unconditional love. My kids have no interest in sports. If they did I would support them.

We have friends whose children are very active in sports. I know how much work it is for their parents to get them to all the games, even away games. Not to mention dropping them off and picking them up from practices and paying a lot of money for supplies and equipment. Parents have to be as dedicated to the sports as their child is. If either of my children had interest in sports I would do all I could to support them.

Of course you don’t have to have a future Olympian on your hands in order to support their hopes and dreams.

Take for example our daughter, who has wanted to attend FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) since she was six years old. She’s always been into fashion and she’s good at art. She wants to be a fashion designer. Although I know that is a “dog eat dog” type career, I don’t want to discourage her from reaching for her dream. You never know. She could be the next Vera Wang or Carolina Herrera. Over the years we have given her a sewing machine and fabrics (to create designs for her dolls), fashion books. subscribed to fashion magazines, even talking about taking her on a trip to the Fashion District in NYC and maybe one day attending NY Fashion Week.

Now that our daughter is older she is now leaning towards maybe being a teacher or going into psychology. Whatever she decides she wants to do we’ll be there to support her 100%.

We have always encouraged our children to “reach for the stars” and encouraged them to be themselves – never a follower.

Being a parent can be hard in this day and age. There are so many things that can undermine or take away from what we teach our children.

I commend all the wonderful moms (and dads) who helped their daughters and sons make it to the Olympics.

As a parent, how do you help encourage and support your child’s hopes and dreams? Feel free to comment and share your thoughts.
