Columbus Day Sales: Buy This, Skip That!

Sales Picture

Retailers look for any opportunity to lure customers through their doors, leveraging holiday sales as a way of creating urgency among shoppers. The notion of a limited-time deal sends consumers into a frenzy, pressuring them to buy and stock up before the discount disappears. While Americans have been conditioned to associate holidays like this upcoming Columbus Day with big savings, not everything is a smart buy.

Follow this Columbus Day shopping guide to figure out what to buy and what to skip this weekend.

With 2016 models dominating dealership lots and year-end quickly approaching, sales associates are anxious to move 2015 cars and trucks. This means more bargaining power for you! To make the process of negotiating with car salespoeple a little easier, use HaggleChamp.com to send a bid to several dealers and let them fight over your offer.

Though we have yet to celebrate Halloween, Thanksgiving will be here before you know it, and with it comes even more deals. Considering Black Friday and Cyber Monday offer the best sales of the year on gadgets like laptops, smartphones and TVs, holding off just a few more weeks will pay you back in extra savings. The only exception is 55″ HDTVs which will see great prices this weekend, according to a recent post from US News & World Report.

As I mentioned in a recent TV interview, back-to-school shopping reports point to October as the best time to buy denim. You can find discounts ranging from 30 to 50-percent off women’s jeans at Nordstrom, or an average of 40-percent off men’s denim selection at JCPenney. Seek additional savings with coupons, like this JCPenney promo code for $10 off $25 found at deals’ site Coupon Sherpa.

While temperatures begin to dip and prices on certain fall and winter apparel go on sale, the real deals will be offered after Christmas when you can expect savings of up to 75-percent off. Until then, make do with your whatever you have in your current wardrobe, or purchase a few pieces on consignment to get through the first few weeks of cold weather.

For whatever reason, shoe retailers have chosen Columbus Day to promote some of the biggest sales on footwear of the year. Check out e-stores like 6pm and ShoeBuy to compare prices quickly and benefit from free shipping both ways on your order. Outlet centers are also a good place to snag savings on brand names like Nike, Adidas and Skechers. Plus, you can use printable coupons like 15% off your purchase at Adidas Outlet for extra savings.

Though footwear deals abound, bigger discounts on winter boots designed for the snow and rain will come in late December and early January after the holidays. If you can get through the beginning of winter with what you have, you’re looking at savings of up to 65 percent. Otherwise, check discount retailers like TJMaxx or Marshall’s for savings on rain and winter boots.

With just a few weeks until Halloween, time is running out to get the look requested by your little one. Waiting until the last minute offers the deepest discount on costumes, but your choices are limited and you don’t want to miss out on this year’s hottest looks. So take advantage of this weekend’s sale on Halloween dress-up must-haves, including up to 30% off costumes from Sears and Kmart, and buy-one-get-one free on select kids’ costumes from Target. (These sales expire Oct. 10.)

Christmas creep is in full swing with department stores to warehouse clubs to small boutique shops already putting winter holiday decor on display. I recently received Columbus Day sales offering discounts on various holiday items like ornaments, wrapping supplies and serveware. While these sales are tempting, the savings are insignificant. Do your finances a favor and hold off until after December 26 to update your collection of decor with discounts of over 75-percent off.

Transition into your fall beauty routine with great deals on your favorite products

Brrr… do you sense a bit of nip in the air? Well… at least those of us who live on the East Coast do (people out West and down South still have hot weather).

I love this time of the year. I’m more of a sweater and sweatpants person than shorts and tank tops. I rather cuddle under a fuzzy blanket on a chilly evening than crank up the AC at full blast so as not to sweat to death.

With the changing of the seasons you really should change up your beauty routine. Living in the Northeast I have to think about the warm, dry air from having the heat on and windows closed that quickly dries out my skin. I get dry all over – from my face to my toes. For that reason I have to make certain to use a good moisturizer on my face and body.

Since I won’t be outside getting much sun I also need something that can help brighten my complexion so I don’t look worn out and dull.

To help you transition into your fall beauty routine, some popular brands are going to be offering special discounts on certain weeks through October 31, 2015. Look for special displays in the beauty section where you’ll find more than 20 new and timeless fan favorites from NEUTROGENA®, AVEENO® and RoC® available at your local Target – all in one place along with special discounts during certain weeks!

Target JJ Products

Here some upcoming specials, including this week’s special discount.

Sept Week 5 (9/27-10/3) – Neutrogena Buy One, Get One 25% off

October Week 1 (10/4-10/10)  – Neutrogena 5% off*

October Week 4 (10/25-10/31) –Aveeno at 5% off

These discounts apply towards cosmetics, cleansers, moisturizers, make-up removers and anti-aging products.

Here are a few examples of products that will be discounted on the specific weeks from the three brands.

  • Aveeno Positively Radiant Moisturizer SPF 30
  • Aveeno Positively Radiant Moisturizer SPF 15
  • Aveeno Positively Radiant CC Cream fair to light
  • Aveeno Positively Radiant CC Cream medium
  • Aveeno Positively Radiant Skin Brightening Scrub
  • Aveeno 25ct Facial Cleansing Wipes

  • RoC Multi- Correxion 5-in-1 Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30
  • RoC Retinol Correxion Eye Cream

  • Neutrogena Rapid Tone Repair Night
  • Neutrogena Rapid Tone Repair Corrector
  • Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Night Moisturizer
  • Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Cleanser Foaming Formula
  • Neutrogena Oil Free Moisture SPF 15
  • Neutrogena Oil Free Moisture Sensitive Skin
  • Neutrogena 25ct Night Calming Wipes
  • Neutrogena Deep Clean Cleanser
  • Neutrogena Pink Grapefruit Scrub
  • Neutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser
  • Neutrogena Ultra Light Cleansing Oil
  • Neutrogena 25ct Makeup Remover Towelettes

I recently went to our local Target to take advantage of some of the discounts as well as to pick up some new beauty products to help me transition into the fall weather.

I’ve really been wanting to try out some RoC products. I heard good things about the brand. I was especially interested in the RoC Multi- Correxion 5-in-1 Daily Moisturizer with SPF 30. That was one of the products that I picked up. I haven’t really had a chance to try it yet (I just picked it up), but I an anxious to see how well it works.

I LOVE Aveeno products. I have been using them for years. I first started using them when I was pregnant with my now 18 1/2 year old daughter. I had REALLY dry skin during pregnancy and my doctor recommended Aveeno’s oatmeal bath. It worked wonders and helped my skin not to itch as much.

My favorite Aveeno products are the Positively Radiant Skin Brightening Daily Scrub and Daily Moisturizer. I had to get those two products.

My daughter requested some make up remover cleansing toweletts. She keeps them in her bag. She likes to use them when she freshens up her make up in between work, school and/or her social life. I like to use them too sometimes, especially when I get home from work. I like to wash my make up off right away, but sometimes I don’t have time when I get home from work because I need to get dinner started. I like using the wipes because I can get the make up off my face and it will hold me over until after dinner when I can fully wash and moisturize my face.

I picked her up some Neutrogena Make Up Remover Cleansing Wipes while at Target. I find that they work very well, even on stubborn mascara.

Cleansing Oil

Speaking of Neutrogena, if you haven’t had a chance to try their NEW Ultra Light Cleansing Oil yet, you should give it a try. Initially I was reluctant to try it because when I think “oil” I think “grease” and I didn’t want to leave my skin greasy which could cause breakouts. This oil actually rinses off great, leaving behind no greasy residue. It does a great job removing make up and leaves your skin feeling soft and hydrated, unlike some other cleansers that can leave your skin feeling dry or sticky.

If you are having trouble finding the products you want in the store, just ask the Target Beauty Concierge team for help. They provide expert opinions and one-on-one advice.  You can find a team near you by entering your zip code here.

To find a Target location near you visit Target.com. You can also check out the brand on social media (links are found on the brand’s website). You can also check out the participating brands websites – Neutrogena, RoC and Aveeno. The beauty brands can also be found on social media.

What are your favorite “must have” beauty products for the fall? Do you have any favorites from Neutrogena, RoC and/or Aveeno – or any of their products you would love to try? Feel free to share your thoughts. I always love to hear from readers.

Give yourself “financial peace of mind”

Black Friday Sale

Its the holiday season. We are all tempted by amazing deals and the enormous savings that companies and brands are flashing in our faces. It’s hard not to want to jump on every great deal. I know I have a difficult time passing up on tremendous savings. Unfortunately I have to keep a realistic mind.

Many years ago we found ourselves in dire straights. We were greatly in debt and didn’t have two dimes to rub together. It was a really rough time in our lives. Thankfully we were able to dig ourselves out of the “black hole” of debt. We have stayed out of debit for about 10+ years. We do have some debit (mortgage, one car payment, medical bills) but they are manageable.

We were foolish years ago. We didn’t create a reasonable and responsible budget. We spent money frivolously. We didn’t take to heart the consequences of spend-thrift spending.

Not all of our spending was foolish. There were times were we genuinely needed to spend the money, such as replacing the fridge when ours broke down (the cost of repair was a lot – it was cheaper to get a new fridge), or unexpected car repairs.

That whole experience taught us a VERY valuable lesson – you must have a reasonable budget and stick to it. At the same time you need to allow yourself a little flexibility so that you are able to enjoy yourself too.

The first thing we did was take a look at all our monthly expenses (electric, phone service, satellite dish, insurance…). Once we had a list of what our expenses were we tried to come up with the average monthly cost each expense cost us. Once we had some idea where our money was going we took each bill one by one and looked at ways to cut the expense down – even a little. For example, did we REALLY need all the channels with the satellite dish? If we cut down the gigs on our phone’s data plan, could we save money? What is we called the electric company and asked about savings plans.

It took a bit of work, and a lot of phone calls, but we were able to cut down our monthly expenses.

The next thing we did was look at other areas where we were spending money (trips to the coffee shop, ordering pizza, getting our haircut at salons…). After looking them over we were able to come up with a budget for all of these miscellaneous things.

We finally came up with a budget – one that was reasonable but also a bit flexible since there are times when “life happens” and you find yourself with an added expense.

We’ve adopted the motto “If we don’t have the money we don’t buy it”, meaning if we don’t truly have the miscellaneous cash for something we don’t buy it until we do – even if that means giving up a great sale.

If we HAVE to buy something on credit (for example, a new dishwasher to replace the one that died) we make it a point to pay it off in full the following month (if possible) or within a few months. We never “only” pay the minimum. We pay as much off as we possibly can.

As I mentioned earlier, it’s easy to be swayed by awesome holiday deals, but don’t lose sight of your finances or financial goals.

Are you buying your Valentine a gift? Let PromotionalCodes.com help save you $$$

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. It’s scary to think about that because Christmas seems like I was just yesterday. Time flies way too quickly. Sigh…

Do you have plans for Valentine’s Day? At the moment we don’t have any plans. We usually try to have dinner and a movie sometime during the month of February. Our “First Date” Anniversary is February 2nd (Groundhog’s Day). We usually combine the anniversary with Valentine’s Day.

I always like to get my hubby a little something, but it’s not always easy to find things for a guy for Valentine’s Day. Women enjoy chocolates, flowers, jewelry and a date night. It’s not as easy to buy something for Valentine’s Day for a man.

Thankfully my hubby is simple. He enjoys likes like chocolates and cookies, or even a special Valentine’s Day cake (which I plan on making him too – I have a new heart shaped pan).

Our budget is more tight than usual these days. Our mortgage went up and our monthly insurance premium went up too. Ugh! It’s more important than ever to find ways to save a few dollars here and there.

I recently learned about a site called PromotionalCodes.com. They have thousands of online coupons and promotional codes to help save you money. They have codes for most major brands and stores including Sears, Roxio, T-Mobile, Macy’s, ProFlowers and FTD. They even have codes for brands like Nutrisystem and All Recipes, which I didn’t think there were discount codes for.

I had a couple of gift cards that I wanted to use. One was for $50 and the other for $25. They were good at 1800 Flowers, Fannie May, The Popcorn Factory, Cheryl’s and 1800 Baskets. I was in luck because PromotionalCodes.com had discount codes for all of these websites.

I know my husband LOVES cookies. He’s my own personal “cookie monster”. I don’t know how he stays so thin. He eats cookies for breakfast! I just have to look at a cookie and I gain a pound (ha ha).

Cheryl’s has yummy cookies, and I know that they would have something for Valentine’s Day. I checked with PromotionalCodes.com and found that they had a 15% off discount code. PERFECT! They had 8 different discount codes for Cheryl’s including $10 off a $60 purchase and another one for FREE shipping. I opted for the 15% off coupon.

Cherys Valentines Day Cookies

Cheryl’s has available a huge Valentine’s Day Cookie Assortment that I know my husband (and our kids) would enjoy. There are 48 cookies in total in yummy flavors like chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, peppermint bark and  sugar & spice.

The assortment is $59.99. The PromotionalCode.com discount code was for 15% off, which saved me $9.00. Along with my gift card the cookies cost me just over $20, which was mostly just tax and shipping.

I was very pleased with the savings. In hindsight I should have gone with the PromotionalCodes.com code for FREE shipping. I would have saved $12.99 instead of $9.00. Make sure you check out all the discount codes available for the site you want to shop from to make sure you use the best one for your purchases.

Cheryls Discount

I wanted to get my husband something else. Since he loves chocolate just as much as I do I thought I would take advantage of my $25 gift card and purchase him some of his favorite chocolate varieties from Fannie May. They have a 2 pound chocolate assortment option where you can pick out the varieties of chocolates you want. No more guessing what might come in the box, or receiving chocolates you won’t like. Since I know what kinds of chocolates my dear hubby enjoys I knew this was a great gift idea too.

PromotionalCodes.com currently has 9 discount codes for Fannie May. They have a FREE shipping code, but the one I opted to use was a 30% off discount code. Thirty percent off is HUGE.

The chocolate assortment I purchased for Valentine’s Day came to $59.99. With the 30% off discount code from PromotionalCodes.com I saved a whopping $18.00! AWESOME!!! 🙂

Fannie May Discount

Whether you are shopping for you sweetheart, or searching for the perfect birthday, anniversary or wedding gift, be sure to stop by PromotionalCodes.com and check out what discount codes they have available for the retailers you shop at the most. Whether it’s a code for FREE shipping, 30% off or another deal, it can translate into big savings.

Just by checking out the available codes at PromotionalCodes.com I was able to save $27. Imagine how much I’ll save over the cost of a year if I stopped by PromotionalCodes.com before making purchases. I’m sure it would total a lot of $$$ over the course of a year.

To check out what discount codes are available for your favorite retailers visit www.PromotionalCodes.com. Be sure to check back often because the discounts change often.

Have you tried PromotionalCodes.com before? Have you scored some great savings? I would love to hear more about it. Feel free to share your thoughts.

Take advantage of huge savings at Kohl’s Grand Opening Sale March 6 – March 17, 2013 ($100 Kohl’s Gift Card giveaway ends 3/18/13) #Kohls

#Kohls Grand Opening Sale

Kohl’s is opening up nine brand new stores across the country. The new stores will even have WiFi so that you can connect with your family and friends while shopping and tell them about all the great prices and merchandise you are finding on your shopping trip. 🙂

To celebrate to opening on the new stores, Kohl’s stores around the country will be having a Grand Opening Sale starting today (March 6, 2013) and ending on Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2013. You can save upwards of 60% on your favorite brands!

I went to my local Kohl’s store to take advantage of this huge sale. I am in need of some fresh pieces for my wardrobe. The weather has been so drab and dreary these days. I thought I would brighten things up a bit by finding a few new tops to go along with my denim capris that I love to wear in the Spring. I have to favorite pairs of denim capris, one are just plain, simple ones. The other ones have an embellishment sewn on to one leg.

I was also in need of a new sweat jacket. I’ve had my current one for a few years now and it’s showing it’s age. It’s time to retire it and get a new sweat jacket (or light weight jacket) to wear during the Spring months when its still a bit chilly, especially in the mornings.

Today was not exactly a great day to head out to the store. We’re anticipating snow tonight and all day it’s been raining off and on. You can tell what kind of a day it was by the photo. This was taken around 10:00 AM.

I found it interesting that despite the not-so-nice weather that Kohl’s was packed. We’ve shopped at Kohl’s plenty of times, but usually on the weekends. Kohl’s is the only place I can find petite jeans for my daughter. We can usually find great deals on jeans for my son at Kohl’s too.

Once inside I made my way to the women’s section. I’m glad that Kohl’s has a plus size section AND they carry designer labels for plus size ladies too.

On my way to the women’s section I had to stop along the way to check out some “bling” (jewelry) that was on display in the walkway. I love things that sparkle and there were a lot of sparklers that caught my eye.

It took me a long time to browse the racks in the women’s section. There were so many great sales going on. I’m talking upwards of 40% on brands like  Croft & Barrow, Daisy Fuentes, Apt 9, Jennifer Lopes and Sonoma Life & Style. I love the Sonoma brand.

Everywhere I looked I saw digital displays with mostly 40% off – and that includes the designer brands like Jennifer Lopez and Daisy Fuentes. They also had really nice simple t-shirts for $7.99! Where else can you can get a nice t-shirt for $7.99? Personally I think the t-shirts were nice enough to be worn to work with a pair of slacks.

I didn’t know that Jennifer Lopez had clothing in my size. She has some nice things. I really liked the Daisy Fuentes blouses. I had a few in my hand, same style, different colors/patterns.

I foolishly didn’t pick up a shopping cart so I had to carry everything in my hands. I had a reusable tote with me but I didn’t want people to think I was trying to take something, so I just carried everything in my hand.

After going through all the racks I finally had a handful of tops and a nice sweat jacket to try on. I was fortunate to get right into the dressing room without having to wait.

Check out some of the great pieces I had (I even tried on another pair of denim capris). What you see in the photo is not everything. There were even MORE tops hanging up (some were hidden behind others).

Kohls Sale

After trying everything on and then narrowing it down I finally decided to take a lovely lightweight tops by Sonoma Life & Style as well as a really soft and pretty sweat jacket by Sonoma Life & Style. I also picked up a nice t-shirt by Croft & Barrow. I don’t even know if t-shirt is the right word for the top, it’s just the best way I can think of to describe it.

After I found a few new tops to go with both of my favorite denim capris, I headed over to the jewelry section to check out those sales. I do have jewelry, BUT, my jewelry box is in my father’s basement, and he lives an hour North of us. When we put our condo on the market we packed up A LOT of stuff to move it out of here so that our condo looked more “roomy”. When we were redoing our master bedroom closet I put my two jewelry boxes in a storage box just to get it out of the way until we were done with the closet. The box got mixed up with the stuff to take to my father’s basement to store until we sold the condo and bought a house. Now the box is impossible to find because we must have 40+ boxes in my father’s basement. The box wasn’t labeled because I never intended for it to go into storage. I was left with no jewelry. Since Kohl’s was having a huge Grand Opening sale I thought I’d pick up a few pieces to add to my new Spring outfits as well as to replace all my jewelry that is now packed away.

WOW! Kohl’s had jewelry on sale for up to 50% off! Take for example this adorable Butterfly necklace I bought (nothing says “Spring” more then a butterfly). It was only $10 (50% off!). In fact most of the jewelry I picked up was 50% off.

I’m sorry these pictures didn’t turn out so well. It’s hard to take pictures of shiny, sparkly things because the flash tends to wash things out.

Kohls Grand Opening Earrings

Can you tell that I like sparkly things?

I even picked up two necklace & earring sets for only $10! I LOVE the set with the iridescent “stone”.

Kohls Necklace

I did purchase one non-Spring thing – a container of Godiva Dark Chocolate Pearls. Think of them as chocolate “Tic-Tacs”. They are little tiny balls of chocolate you can pop in your mouth the same way you would a Tic Tac. That was an impulse buy. 🙂

Over all I spent $144.58 – but – I saved a jaw dropping $103.64 thanks to the Grand Opening sale. WOW! Over $100 in savings! :-)!!!!!!

In addition to saving over $100 I also received $20.00 in Kohl’s Cash. For every $50 you spend you get $10 in Kohl’s Cash. Since I spent over $100+ I got $20 back. If I would have spent another $5+ I could have got back another $10 in Kohl’s Cash. I’m kicking myself now because I was eyeing the Dr. Seuss books and plush that Kohl’s has as part of their Kohl’s Cares program. I LOVE Dr. Seuss. I wanted to pick up a few of the plush (one of each) and the books (one of each). I totally forgot about it. It wasn’t until after I checked out that I remembered I wanted to get them.

Kohls Cash

I’m not sure if this is the case during the duration of the Grand Opening sale, or if it was just for today, but I was told if I opened up a Kohls credit card I could save an ADDITIONAL 30% off my total. WOW! That is A LOT! However we already have a Kohls credit card.

The other day in the mail I received something for Kohl’s that gave me an additional 15% off if I used my Kohl’s credit card. There was a chance of saving up to 30% but my “secret” amount was only 15%. I opted not to take advantage of the 15% additional savings. We don’t owe anything on our Kohls card and we like to keep it that way. We use the Kohls card for back to school shopping.

If you are looking to jazz up your Spring wardrobe now is the time to do so. But hurry! The Grand Opening sale at Kohl’s ends on March 17, 2013!

$100 Kohls Gift Card

To help you pick up some new fashion pieces, I have a $100 Kohl’s gift card to giveaway to a lucky winner. Thank you Kohl’s.

This giveaway is open to US residents only and will end on March 18, 2013 at 11:59 PM (EST). The winner will be chosen at random using a random number generator from all eligible entries. The winner will be notified via e-mail and will have three days to reply or a new winner will be chosen in their place.
