If you are looking for something fun to watch this weekend, or perhaps even this week (every thing is pretty much repeats now until the fall), check out the movie Tom and Jerry. It’s available today (May 18, 2021) on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital. It’s released by Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.
The film stars Chloë Grace Moretz and Michael Peña, and of course, Tom and Jerry (they have no speaking parts).
This film is part animation (Tom and Jerry) and part live action.
I grew up watching Tom and Jerry. In fact, my husband and I still watch them when we happen across them on television. I’ll watch episodes of Tom and Jerry regardless when they were made whereas my husband is picky. He only really likes the older episodes – the ones we watched when we were kids.
I think I was drawn to Tom and Jerry because I love animals, and because they are funny.
In this film, Tom made his way to New York City, where he dreams of becoming a famous pianist. His nemesis, Jerry, is also in New York City, looking for a new place to live. The duo meet up by chance, which ends in a huge fight and Tom’s keyboard getting destroyed.
Jerry finds his way to a fancy hotel, where he decides to take up residence. In the meantime, Tom tries to find ways to get inside to capture Jerry, but he has no luck. That is until he meets a woman named Kayla (Moretz). She applied for a job at the hotel using a stolen resume. She is hired and tasked with assisting Terence (Peña) with a high profile wedding being held at the hotel.
Tom eventually finds his way into the hotel to go after Jerry. In the process, they cause a lot of destruction. It’s also when Kayla befriends Tom and asks her boss to hire Tom to help get rid of Jerry. But as you well know, Tom can never catch Jerry, and usually they leave a path of destruction whenever they are together. That is certainly not something you want when you are trying to plan a huge wedding.
I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but something happens that might cancel the wedding all together, and force Kayla out of a job again.
Will Tom FINALLY be able to catch Jerry once and for all? Will the wedding work out for Kayla so she can keep the job at the hotel? To find out, you need to purchase or rent Tom and Jerry. Look for it where ever movies are sold/rented.
When I first saw the trailer for this film, I wasn’t sure what to make of it. It’s a film shot in real life with “flat” (for lack of a better description) animated Tom and Jerry, and other animated critters. You would think with today’s technology, the animation would be more realistic and/or 3-D in a way (similar to how the Peanuts characters were done in the animated movie that was released several years ago). That was my initial impression, however, after watching the film, I can see why the film makers wanted to stay true to the Tom and Jerry characters. How they look in the film brings back a sense of nostalgia for people like me and my husband, who grew up on the crazy duo.
The story line it’s self is entertaining. Not only is there plenty of “Tom vs. Jerry” moments, but there are also other fun characters. The “real people” were just as entertaining as their animated counterparts.
I think Moretz was a joy to watch in this film. She’s such an amazing young actress. It’s nice to see how she can go from serious roles (Carrie, Greta) to something fun and lighthearted, like Tom and Jerry. I give her a lot of credit for acting as if she really “saw” the animated characters.
Peña was also delightful in this film.
Overall I found the film to be fun and entertaining. My husband enjoyed it as well. In fact, he was planning on watching it again at work during his “down time.” For that reason I uploaded the film digitally so he can watch it from our FandangoNow account.
What I think is great about this film is that both young and old alike will enjoy it. There is something for everyone in this film. It’s a wonderful film that is made to entertain you and make you laugh. It’s a “light and fluffy” kind of movie. It’s not meant to be “deep and serious.” Let’s face it, with what the world has gone through this past year, we all need to laugh and have a good time. This is the ideal film for that.
I also like that this film is a fun way to introduce a new generation to Tom and Jerry.
