We Need to Talk stars James Maslow, Daytime Emmy Award Winner Christel Khalil, Jonathan Hernandez, and Tray Chaney. In addition there are some cameos from real life gamers.
Scott (Maslow) is a popular gamer who goes by the nickname “Great Scott.” Scott reviews videos games and shares his video reviews online to his fans. He lives, eats, drinks, sleeps video games 24/7 – much to the dismay of his long time girlfriend Aly.
One morning, Aly complains about how he didn’t come to bed the night before, and her feet were cold and she could have used him to warm her up. He was up all night playing a video game that he needed to review.
As Aly was leaving for work, she stopped to tell Scott “we need to talk.” Scott, being too consumed by the video game he was playing, didn’t take what she said to heart.
As the day goes on, and Scott’s video game friends get involved, Scott soon realizes that Aly saying “we need to talk” could be about many different things – including a break-up.
Instead of focusing only video games, Scott spends the entire day trying to figure out what Aly wants to talk about. He is also under pressure by a video game company to review their latest game.
What does Aly want to talk about? Is it good news or bad news? To find out you need to check out We Need to Talk. Look for it on digital May 13th, or check out the special premiere screening on May 12th (details above).
This is an enjoyable rom-com (romantic comedy). Maybe it’s not romantic in the true sense of the word, but hearing those four little words, “we need to talk,” did force Scott to take a good, hard look at his relationship with Aly, and how he doesn’t treat her the way she deserves to be treated, especially for having to put up with his video game lifestyle.
I enjoyed the banter between Scott and the other video gamers. There is one gamer, Kyle (Devin Kennedy), who is just a kid (I’d guestimate 13 years old). Oh! The mouth on him! If I was his mom and I knew he talked that way, I’d wash his mouth out with soap.
The acting in is film is really good. I was impressed, especially because I am not familiar with any of these actors.
I did not know that James Maslow (Scott) was in the series Big Time Rush. My daughter used to watch that show. He looks nothing like he did back when the series was on air (his hair is not shaggy anymore).
There is an actress in the film (Emily Bett Rickards) I could have sworn was Neve Campbell the first time I saw her. Her character was funny too.
I think a lot of people can relate to the character of Aly. I’m sure there are a lot of woman out there (men too) who have “lost” their significant other to the world of video gaming. I personally don’t play video games, but I can see how some of those games can be “addicting.” When I was a young girl I had Intellivision (a cheaper version of an Atari). There was a game called Astrosmash that I would play for HOURS. I had a really high score too. That game had horrible graphics and animations compared to today’s video games.
Overall I really enjoyed this film. I would definitely watch it again if I happened across it on the premium channels or streaming services. I also like the unique storyline.
This is a fun “date night” movie.
