Are you a fan of licorice? I sure am. I always, and I do mean always, grab a package of licorice whenever my husband and I go to the movies. For me, enjoying licorice at a movie as natural as eating popcorn (we do that too). It’s a part of our movie going experience.
The movie theater only has red licorice, which is fine. However I am a fan of black licorice. Yes… people actually do enjoy the taste of black licorice.
Funny story, my “work kids” didn’t know what black licorice tasted like, so I brought in a package of a hard candy with a black licorice center (I won’t mention the brand, but the candies are coloring white and pink). The kids each took a couple of the candies and tried them. It was funny to see how quickly pretty much most of them ran to the garbage can to spit it out. LOL!
I grew up enjoying black licorice. My great-grandfather often had licorice allsorts candies (I’m not sure if that is the brand name or not). They are pictured above. Mmm…they are so good and they bring back such fond memories.
People often think licorice comes in red (cherry) and black flavors. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Licorice is available in such flavors as watermelon, cinnamon, blueberry pomegranate, green apple, berry and even huckleberry (what even is a huckleberry?).
The brand Wiley Wallaby licorice offers consumers all these delicious flavors, as well as the classic red and black licorice varieties.
Wiley Wallaby licorice is fat free, vegan and does not contain artificial colors and flavors. In addition, each piece is thick, chunky and super-soft. They even have organic varieties, low sugar, as well as allsorts, funsorts, and beans.
I was sent some Wiley Wallaby licorice to try out for myself. I have actually seen the brand in our local drug store, but I never tried it. Sadly, my local drug store only carries the classic red. I wish they carried the other flavors too.
When I receive the licorice to review I immediately opened the Hot Cinnamon flavor. My husband and I love cinnamon candies because of the “heat” they offer. I was surprised at how thick and chunky the Wiley Wallaby licorice is. Honestly, 1-2 pieces is enough to satisfy my sweet tooth. A serving size for this flavor, as an example, is three (3) pieces for 90 calories. When you compare that to other candies, it’s not so bad.
The Hot Cinnamon is delicious. It’s not as “hot” as I was anticipating, but it was still very yummy and enjoyable. Notice I said “was.” That is because me and my family already finished off that whole bag.
I also received other flavors including the classic red and black. The black licorice is SO GOOD! But I must say, it was their fruity flavors that really got my attention – especially the Huckleberry of all things. I don’t even know what a huckleberry is!
The Huckleberry is another one of the “was” flavors from Wiley Wallaby. We finished that bag off too. It’s so sweet and delicious with a great fruity flavor.
Watermelon is summer’s most popular fruit. This licorice does not disappoint either. If you find yourself craving some of summer sweet treat, keep some of these on hand. It will give you the same yummy flavor without the mess (watermelon is so sticky).
Just look at how big and chunky the pieces are!
I was worried that they might be too sticky to eat (I’ve had crowns pop out eating candy before), but so far, so good. I’ve had no issues at all. You can pop the entire thing in your mouth, or savor them a bit longer and take bites out of each piece.
The Blueberry Pomegranate is another delicious fruity licorice from the brand. It’s so sweet and so good! You can really taste the delightfully fruity blueberries with a hint of pomegranate (unless it’s the other way around)?
Sometimes green apple can be “hit or miss.” Either either too sweet and tart, or not sweet/tart enough. I found that this licorice had a more subtle taste to it. Out of all the flavors, this one was properly my least favorite. Then again, I’m not a huge fan of green apple because of the above mentioned reason.
My family has been enjoying this flavor, so it’s certainly not going to waste.
Green apple flavors also remind me of autumn.
Of course, I love (or should I say my family) loves the Classic Red flavor. I’m the only person who likes the Classic Black Licorice in my family, so that bag is all mine.
I consider myself a big fan of this brand of licorice. Thankfully you can purchase the products online, seeing as how my local store only carries the Classic Red. I think if more people were aware of the other great flavors, they would request local stores to carry the other varieties as well.
I enjoyed all of the licorices that were sent to me to review. If I had to pick out my top favorites I’d say Huckleberry, Blueberry Pomegranate and Classic Black are my top free.
One day I’d like to try their other products. I bet they taste pretty amazing too.
