When I think Hickory Farms I think about their Meltaway Mints. As a young girl they were the one thing that I made sure to purchase for my Great-Grandfather (Grandad) every Christmas. Grandad LOVED those Meltaway Mints. They turned into a tradition in our household. Everyone always made sure that Grandad had the Meltaway Mints. Sometimes he received several packages of them. He was “good to go” for many months afterwards when he received multiple packages.
Grandad passed away in the mid-80’s.I have purchased another Meltaway Mint since then, nor have I received any as a gifts. They will always remind me of Grandad. Even though Hickory Farms offers so many products the mints will always be first and foremost on my list.
Hickory Farms usually has a kiosk at local malls set up for the holiday season. They are a great source for last minute gift ideas or when you are stumped on what to get someone. They have a nice assortment off meats, cheeses and sweet treats, including Meltaway Mints.
I received a delightful picnic basketfrom Hickory Farms willed with many of their popular treats. To my surprise the picnic basket contained a bag of Meltaway Mints! I can’t tell you how excited I was to share them with my children and tell them about their Great-Great-Grandfather. Even though I haven’t had them in about 25+ years they still tasted just as good as I remembered them. They are very creamy and have just the right amount of mint. The Meltaway Mints are topped off with non-pareils. My daughter said they are like minty Snow Cap candies, which in a way they are. My kids can’t get enough of them.
Also included in the picnic basket was some peanut brittle. I haven’t had peanut brittle in ages. I did try to make some once, about 5+ years ago, but it didn’t taste like peanut brittle at all. The peanut brittle that came in the picnic basket taste just as good as I remember. There weren’t many super hard pieces either. I hate it when peanut brittle is thick and hard. I’m always afraid I’ll break a tooth.
The picnic basket came with a variety of cheeses, Mission Jack and Creamy Swiss. Mmm… the Creamy Swiss is PERFECT for the Flat Bread Crackers that also come with the picnic basket. We just sliced off thin pieces and topped it on pices of the flat bread. It is real Swiss Cheese but it reminds me of something else. I can’t put my finger on it. It’s firm but has a soft, creamy texture like another type of cheese I’ve had.
The Mission Jack cheese was pretty good too. I have never had it before. It too is a nice compliment to the Flat Bread Crackers.
Hickory Farm is known for both its tasty cheeses and yummy sausages. The picnic basket also included three different sausages; Beef, Turkey and Beef & Pork.
I happen to like the sausages. I remember them from years gone by when we used to purchase them from Hickory Farms (when I was young and lived at home with my parents). My Mom used to slice it up and serve it along with the cheese platter.
The sausages tasted just like I remembered them. I honestly can’t tell the difference between them. If you asked me which was Turkey and which was the Beef & Pork I honestly couldn’t tell you.
I like the sausages either on crackers (or the Flat Bread) or even just by the slice.
A nice addition to the sausage is the mustard varieties included with the basket. The Sweet Hot Mustard was a nice change of pace from the hot mustard I am used to. It does have a slight sweetness to it. This went perfectly with the sausage.
My new favorite mustard is the Honey-Pineapple Mustard! I love it! I wouldn’t think that Pineapple and Mustard would go well together but it does. It provides a nice balance between spicy (mustard) and a tangy, tartness (pineapple and honey). I cannot wait to try this with on a ham sandwich. YUMM!!! That will taste amazing.
The beautiful Peterboro picnic basket is going to be enjoyed for many years to come. I plan on using it when our family goes on picnics near the Hudson River over the summer. Its just the right size for several sanwiches, fruit and some sweet treats.
Did you know that Hickory Farms sells whole hams and turkeys? I LOVE spiral cut ham for Christmas dinner. I’m drooling just thinking about it.
Hickory Farms also offers some lovely fruit gift baskets too. Pears are always nice to nosh on during the holidays. You can also dress them up with some cinnamon and nutmeg.
