I wouldn’t say that I ALWAYS use all natural or organic products, but I am slowly adding them into my family’s diets. The more I learn about what is done to the food that we eat, such as the “Pink Slime“, the more I want to know EXACTLY what is in the foods that my family eats.
Unlike products you buy off the shelf that is clearly labeled, you never really know what is in the meats that you are serving your family.
Did you know that some meats contains hormones and/or antibiotics? Those hormones and antibiotics find their way into your meatballs or lamb chops, and ultimately into your child’s stomach. Eww… just thinking about it grosses me out. Not to mention what exactly do these things do to the human body?
Suzy Sirlion, an online retailer of meats, has a new line of lean gourme beef, lamb and veal that provides consumers with ready-to-cook natural alternative.
Suzanne Strassburger, a fifth-generation member of the iconic New York Strassburger Meats family. She recognized that consumers were becoming more health-conscious, and created Suzy Sirloin to provide easy access to lean, all-natural meats with no hormones or antibiotics for healthy and stress-free dinners.
Suzy Sirloin products are perfect for small family dinners or larger affairs such as backyard barbecues and kids’ birthday parties. Kids love the taste of Suzy Sirloin Sliders (starting at $6.99/lb) tacos, and Sloppy Joe’s made with Suzy’s ground beef ($7.99/lb). Parents love that they are 90% lean meat and 100% hormone-free.
Suzy Sirloin products are available at tri-state area grocery stores (Gristedes, Morton Williams, Westside Markets, Westerly Natural and Frank’s Gourmet, to name a few) and sampler boxes can be ordered online and home-delivered. Suzy Sirloin delivers everywhere within the continental US.
Suzy Sirlion sent me some samples to try out with my family to see what they thought of the lean meats. I received a package of sliders and packages of ground beef.
The kids just had to try the sliders right away. I could never figure out where to get the small hamburger rolls from. My husband recommended using biscuits or English Muffins. I tried them with biscuits. It wasn’t as good as having the little hamburger rolls, but they were still yummy.
My kids LOVED the sliders. They have been begging me to make them again. I’ll have to order more sliders from Suzy Sirloin the next time hubby gets paid. They were so easy to make because they are already pre-shaped for you. Simply grill them on the barbecue or in a pan, put them on your bread of choice, add your toppings and enjoy.
I used some of the ground beef to make meatballs for meatball sandwiches, which ended up being meatball sandwiches AND spaghetti with meatballs because my kids didn’t want meatball sandwiches. My husband and I ended up with meatball sandwiches and the kids had the spaghetti and meatballs.
I cooked them in the crock pot. I think I should have made the meatballs a little smaller. Some were too big and broke apart when cooking. That actually turned out good because I used the broken pieces of meat in the sauce for the spagetthi.
As far as how the meat tasted, my family gobbled it all up. I would assume that means they enjoyed how it tasted. 🙂 Personally I found the meat to tasty yummy and fresh. That was my main concern – freshness. I didn’t want the meat to taste like it’s been in cold storage for the past several months. It tasted really fresh which I appreciated.
My husband is NOT a fan of ordering meats through the mail. He worries that the meat will go bad during shipping or that it will have freezer burn or look gray and gross. The meat from Suzy Sirloin was really pink and fresh looking. You would never suspect it was shipped through the mail. It looks like I picked it up from our local grocer. Plus the meats are not very expensive either. Not like other gourmet meat companies.
I have one more package left which I plan on using to make either Sloppy Joes or meatloaf. If I make meat loaf I’ll have to mix the Suzy Sirloin ground beef with some ground turkey (I don’t think the one package is enough for meat loaf for my family of four).
Speaking of meatloaf, here is a super easy Meatloaf recipe, as well as a Meatball recipe.
Meatloaf
– 1 lb. ground beef
– 1 chopped red pepper
– 1 chopped green pepper
– 1 chopped large tomato
– 1 cup soft bread crumbs
– 1 large egg
– A pinch of salt/pepper
Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl and place the mixture in a baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 45 minutes to an hour.
Meatballs
– 3 packages of Suzy Sirloin Gourmet Meatball & Meatloaf Mix
– 2 eggs
– 1/4 cup of Italian Style bread crumbs
– 1 tsp of Italian seasonings
– 1/4 teaspoon of salt, pepper, garlic powder & chopped onion (dry)
Mix well and make into round balls. Bake at 350 degrees until cooked through. Top with your favorite sauce. Another option can be to place in a crock pot and cook in sauce for the rest of the day on low until ready to serve.
