Rock of Ages Review & Giveaway (ends 10/18/12) #RockofAges

Get ready for a musical trip down memory lane. The star studded film, Rock of Ages, will be available on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download on October 9, 2012.

Rock of Ages started out as a hit Broadway musical. It stared Constantine Maroulis from American Idol as the lead role of Drew Boley. In the film version Drew is played by Diego Boneta. The movie version also features the talents of Julianne Hough, Tom Cruise, Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, Mary J. Blige, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Malin Ackerman and Paul Giamatti.

In a nutshell Rock of Ages is the story of a young boy (Drew) and young girl (Sherrie) (Diego & Julianne) who are both in Hollywood looking to make it big. As you know, the fierce competition in Hollywood crushes a lot of dreams. Both dream of making it big. Drew was a bus boy at a popular club called the Bourbon Room. Sherrie, who just arrived from Kansas, is looking for employment when she meets Drew. Drew convinces his boss to hire Sherrie as a waitress.

The Bourbon Room is a popular hot spot in town, much to the dismay of the mayor and his daughter. They are determined to put an end to the Bourbon Room because they feel like the sex, drugs and rock-n-roll lifestyle is polluting their city. They want to promote “clean living”. The reality is that a pair of developers want the Bourbon Room to close down for their benefit, not because they feel it promotes a bad lifestyle.

In effort to save the Bourbon Room the club’s owner Dennis (Alec Baldwin) feels that if they can bring in big name talent it will not only help them to make money but also help save the Burbon Room. So they hire a popular band headed by singer Stacee Jax (Tom Cruise) to come and play there. Stacee Jax is a womanizer who uses women and tosses them aside. Unfortunately Sherrie becomes his latest “victim”. She falls for him because she feels like her feelings for Drew are unrequited (unbeknown to her, Drew has feelings for her too). After Stacee has his way with Sherrie he has her fired from the club. Meanwhile Drew gets to perform at the Bourbon Room and impresses some record producers. Will he finally reach his dream of becoming a rock star?

Sherrie who is broken hearted and unemployed gets a new job as an exotic dancer in a nearby club called the Venus Club. Her dreams of making it big have been crushed. She also still has feelings for Drew.

Will Drew and Sherrie ever get together? Will the Bourbon Room be forced to close it’s doors? You’ll just have to pick up a copy of the movie to find out.

I liked this movie. The acting wasn’t steller, but, the music/soundtrack is AMAZING! I grew up listening to this music. I was totally into the “hair bands” of the 80′s. All my favorites contribute to the music in the film including Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, Twisted Sister and Poison, to name a few. It was awesome listening to the music. It was liking walking down memory lane. I must get the soundtrack for this movie.

Julianne Hough is darling. How can you not love her?

I have never heard of Diego Boneta before, until this movie. He’s appeared in Pretty Little Liars and the newer version of Beverly Hills 90210. He was a great choice for the part of Drew.

Tom Cruise as Stacee Jaxx was just way over the top. Seeing Tom Cruise with long hair and shirtless was just too weird for me. I still see him as Mavrick from Top Gun and Steve from The Outsiders. Tom Crusie actually DOES sing in this movie. According to an interview with director Adam Shankman, Tom worked with a voice coach and practiced singing for hour everyday for months.

Over all I enjoyed the movie. It was fun, and funny in a lot of parts. My husband and I especially liked it. My teens were not impressed because they didn’t like the ”old music” in the film (LOL… what do kids these days know about classic hair band music?).
