I started a conversation on my personal Facebook page about Cabbage Patch Dolls. They are celebrating their 30th Anniversary (or should I say Birthday?) this year. They first came out in 1983.
If you are around my age (40 something) chances are you remember the insanity around Cabbage Patch Dolls. They were THE toy to have. Everyone went crazy for them. You couldn’t find them anywhere because the moment they made it to the store shelf they were gone. People were in buying frenzy. A friend of mine worked at a department store at the time and said that people were fighting with one another – physically fighting – all for the right to claim one of the dolls. Now that’s crazy!
I remember my older sister was able to score one of the dolls before I did. She had our relatives in the United Kingdom look for the dolls for her. When they found one they shipped it to her. I had to wait about a year later until I finally got a Cabbage Patch Doll. I had a boy doll and I named him Brendan James. I still have him too. He’s packed away in my father’s basement. I gave him to both my kids when they were little. They played with him for a bit and as soon as they moved on to another toy I packed him away. Who knows, maybe he’ll reappear when I have grandchildren.
It’s hard to believe that these cuddly, lovable dolls have been making their way into the arms of boys and girls around the world for 30 years. That is amazing.
To celebrate their 30th Anniversary, JAKKS Pacific has created a new doll called Cabbage Patch Kids “Fun to Feed” Babies.

JAKKS Pacific sent me one of these adorable Cabbage Patch Dolls to review. My kids are teenagers so I plan on giving the doll to my little niece Isabella. I know she’s going to love this doll and I’m excited to give it to her this weekend when I see her. 🙂
I received an adorable little girl with short reddish brown hair. Her name on the birth certificate is Deanna Margot. She was born on September 16th. 🙂
My Cabbage Patch Doll from decades ago had yarn for hair. This little baby doll has soft, silky almost human like hair.
My doll came with one of the bottles. On two sides of the bottle there is a heart shaped “window” which allows you to look inside. When you feed your baby the “milk” inside looks like it disappears when you are feeding the baby.
My daughter who is 16 immediately made a comment about how the baby smelled. She said “I remember that smell”. Me too! These new Cabbage Patch dolls have the same classic baby powder like scent to them. She even asked me if the doll had the signature on the butt. She actually remembered that. I’m very impressed! And yes, these dolls have the signature on their little butts too.
The baby doll even comes with a diaper. That is really cute! I don’t recall seeing diapers for Cabbage Patch Dolls before. The diaper feels and looks like the real thing too.
The doll also has a soft body and a plastic face, just like the classic Cabbage Patch Doll.
Look for the adorable Cabbage Patch Kids “Fun to Feed” Babies at Walmart and other retail locations.
For more information on other JAKKS Pacific toys visit www.JAKKS.com. You can also check them out on Facebook and Twitter.
The hashtag for the various social media channels is #CabbagePatchKids.
You can also find more fun Cabbage Patch Kids goodies at www.CabbagePatchKids.com.
JAKKS Pacific would love to give a She Scribes reader their very own Cabbage Patch Kids “Fun to Feed” Baby. The doll will be a random doll and will not necessarily look like the one I received. Thank you JAKKS Pacific!

When I was a girl, all I wanted was a cabbage patch doll one Christmas. I knew Santa wasn’t real already. We opened gifts on Christmas eve at my grandparents, and I didn’t get one. I was so very sad. Well the next morning I woke up and went into the living room. Apparently “Santa” had been there and brought toys for all the younger kids. I saw a cabbage patch doll under the tree, but I knew it was for a younger niece. As I sat there watching everyone get their gifts, my grandmother says, well, Michelle, I think Santa left this one is for you!!! I couldn’t believe it. I just started bawling. It was a magical moment, one I’ll never forget.

I remember working at a toy store (Kiddie City) when the dolls first came out. (Yes, I was a lady of the 80s) Well, they sold out so fast. We would have people come to the store every morning and wait for the doors to open just to see if the dolls came in. I remember one woman in particular who followed this ritual. As an employee, I was allowed to get two of the dolls before the public could. So, one morning when a shipment of dolls come in, I let this diligent lady come in and I walked her to the stock room and let her have her pick.

I got my first cabbage patch doll when I was 8 years old. I took that doll with me everywhere. I use to sleep with it and it always came with me when we went to Grandma’s or on vacation. I know it sounds silly but when I went away to college, I took it with me. I still have it today. I am sure that my daughter will enjoy her first cabbage patch kid the way I did.

I remember when they first came out my best friends mom worked at Zayre’s and she knew when the Cabbage Patch Dolls were coming in and each employee was able to reserve a couple of dolls before they were put on the sales floor, so me & my friend were so excited to each be getting one.

AWW! I wish I had seen this before the contest ended. I am desperately searching for a Cabbage Patch doll that has the 30th anniversary box like this one does. I was born in 1983 like the dolls were and so this year (next month in fact) I am also celebrating my 30th birthday. Do you know if any other stores sell the 30th ones? My Walmart doesn’t have any.
