I love listening to music. I am a firm believer in that music can really alter your mood. For example, when I am going to work on a wet, dreary Monday morning I like to listen to happy, upbeat music to lift my mood. After all, who wants to go to work on a rainy Monday?
When I am cleaning I’ll play high energy tunes to get my blood pumping and energize me so that I can tackle the tasks at hand.
I only have a radio and tape cassette player in my car. That’s right – a tap cassette player. Not only that I have dozen of tapes I can listen too (all from the 80’s). I just can’t be bothered.
I used to listen to music I purchased on my phone. I would stream it via Bluetooth technology to a portable speaker I keep in my car. The problem with that is that I am stuck listening to the same music over and over again. Not only that music takes up a lot of space on my phone (and I don’t have a lot of space to begin with).
I have tried those music services, but I don’t like listening to the advertising and I dislike being limited to the number of “skips” I can have. I don’t want to be stuck listening to a tune that I don’t like.
Have you ever heard of Google Play Music? I have heard of Google Play, but I didn’t think they had music. I thought it was all just fun and games. Google Play, the destination for apps, books, games and more.
Google Play has music app that allows you to enjoy unlimited music in an ad-free environment with more than 30 million songs, along with music videos and curated music stations customized for your moment, mood or activity.
This is a paid subscription service at $9.99 per month. With access to so much music, for me, it’s well worth every penny. I have been able to create play lists with every different type of music genre you can think of and songs that are not always easy to find elsewhere with other music apps.
You can access Google Play Music from your computer, tablet or mobile device any time, 24/7. I have the app on my cellphone which allows me to stream my playlists to my portable speaker (via Bluetooth) any time I want to listen to MY music in the car and not the radio (I’m not a big fan of morning talk radio programming).
In addition to all this music, Google Play Music allows users to store up to 50,000 songs for free and stream or download them them to your (iOS, Android) phone, tablet, computer, and Chromecast. This means you can protect the music you already own/purchased (including your iTunes collection) by transferring it to Google Play’s free music storage service.
Transferring your purchased/download music is easy to do with Google Play Music in just four easy steps:
- Sign in to Google Play Music with your Google account – Go to your computer and visit google.com/music. Sign up if needed.
- Claim your free storage – If you’d like to try the Google Play music subscription service too, click “Get Started”. Otherwise, click “No Thanks” to continue with the free storage.
- Add your music collection – The setup process will guide you through adding the Chrome app*, which provides seamless uploading. You can choose to simply upload your entire iTunes library or select other music folders. You can upload 50,000 songs for free.
- Access your music at any time on multiple devices – You can stream or download music to your Android, iPhone, or iPad for easy offline listening. It’s also all available on the web when you’re on your computer. And when you upgrade to a new computer or the latest mobile device, your music comes along too. You’ll never be without your favorite artists again!
*Not using Chrome? The setup process at step 3 will instead guide you through installing Music Manager where you can still add 50,000 songs.

I never thought I would use this service as much as I do. I use it on a daily basis.
I LOVE that I am able to find my favorite songs from my favorite artists, both past and present. Even songs I didn’t think I would find are available on this service.
I have several playlists set up. Every morning on my way to work I pick out which playlist I want to listen to. Each one has dozens of songs on it. There is no limit to how many songs and playlists you can have.
Google Play Music even has pre-made playlists that you can choose from depending on your mood or the occasion. Are you enjoying the morning? Why not listen to Feel Good Classic Rock? Are you working out? Check out the High Intensity Pop playlist. You can even check out today’s hits.
I like that you can vide music videos for almost all the songs available on Google Play Music too. Some are “oldies but goodies” that are fun to watch. Others I never knew a music video was available for the song so they are fun to watch too.
You can search the music by the song title, artist, album and even find music/artists that are similar which is a great way to explore and discover new music.
I even found “Let it Go” from Disney’s Frozen on Google Play Music. That is great to have when you are around little ones (most children know that song by heart – LOL).

A subscription to this service would make a great gift. It’s $120 for the entire year, but when you think about how much you spend on gifts for a teen or college student, it’s not a bad price.
Google Play Music has generously offered to give a lucky She Scribes reader a one year subscription to their service ($120 value). Thank you Google Play Music!
