Now available on Blu-ray and DVD is season two of Showtime’s hit series Penny Dreadful.
Penny Dreadful stars Timothy Dalton, Josh Hartnett, Reeve Carney, Eva Green, Rory Kinnear, Helen McCrory, Billie Piper, Patti LuPone, Danny Sapani and Harry Treadaway.
Penny Dreadful is a soap opera-like series – but not in the way you are used to seeing soap operas. Instead of handsome and debonair men and drop dead gorgeous women, Penny Dreadful stars Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, witches, werewolves and a few other assorted interesting people.
Penny Dreadful is a wicked and dark series. I think it might be an “acquired taste” too. I enjoy the series where as my husband just can’t get into it. Then again I’m more into creepy, odd and usual things than he is.
The series is about explorer Sir Malcolm Murray. His daughter was taken by the city’s creatures. With the help of a physic medium Vanessa and an American gun toting cowboy named Ethan, they go after the supernatural beings that call Victoria London their home.
It’s hard to really get into each episode and the long list of characters if you have never seen the series before. Like a soap opera there are many twists and turns and plenty of new characters popping up here and there. I think that is part of the reason why my husband is not into the series like I am. He hasn’t seen all but two or three episode at best and I think he’s lost. Just like with a soap opera, the first few weeks that you watch it (if you haven’t watched since the beginning) it’s hard to figure out what is going on. Once you are caught up on the various story lines you are able to enjoy and appreciate the show much more.
If you’ve missed the first season, you can still pick up with season two and eventually catch up with the story lines. In fact, season two might be a good starting point because it gives you more backstory to some of the characters.
For those of you who are fans of the series, I think you will enjoy season two better. I found season two better than season one. I think there is more “meat” to this season compared to the first one. It’s as if in season one the show was trying to find it’s “footing” and in season two they worked out all the kinks and are now able to dive into the nitty gritty of the show, if that makes sense?
Penny Dreadful does for Gothic literary characters that Once Upon a Time does for fairy tale characters. Unlike Once Upon a Time, Penny Dreadful is dark, creepy and gory. I think that is why I like it so much – because I love horror movies and the like.
Look for Penny Dreadful: Season Two, where ever Blu-rays/DVDs are sold.
Are you a fan of the series? If so, what is your favorite story line and/or character thus far? Feel free to share your thoughts.
