Hello and welcome to She Scribes, my little ”home away from home”, even though I blog from home. LOL!
If you are stopping by this page I’m sure you want to know a little more about the person behind the blog. That would be me!
My name is Kimberly Vetrano. In a nutshell I’m a 40 something year old mother, wife, freelance writer, photographer, blogger (of course!) and a mini-zoo keeper.
I’m married to my very best friend. We eloped in October 1996 and then remarried in a church in October 1997.
We have two children. Our beautiful daughter was born in 1997 and our son was born in 1999. Our son was 9 weeks premature and weighed only 2 1/2 pounds 14″ long. We are grateful that he’s healthy and growing bigger every day.
My family resides in the suburbs of New York City. I’m originally from upstate New York (Dutchess County). My husband affectionately refers to it as “cow country”. I’m a country bumpkin at heart. I would be perfectly content living on a farm, collecting my own eggs, milking my own cows and growing fruits and veggies in my garden. Since my husband is from where we live now, he’s more of a city boy. There is no way he could live on a farm. I don’t think my kids could either. After all, they are afraid of flies and ladybugs. Seriously? When was the last time someone was killed by a ladybug? Some how I don’t think my kids could make it in the country.
Some day I want to move back upstate and own a house with a yard. We currently reside in a small condo. My yard is a 6′ x 12′ balcony.
I am overweight and deal with Anemia, Diabetes and Hypothyroidism. Not fun! I have been overweight all my life. In 1992 I had a Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass. I went from 364 to 178 pounds in under 2 years. When I got pregnant with my daughter I gained 50+ pounds. Afterwards I continued to gain weight. I pretty much gained back 100 pounds of the nearly 200 pounds that I lost. Some day I hope to get the Lap Band surgery. I no longer have a pouch so I am always hungry.
I want to eat healthy and exercise. I try and do my best when it comes to eating right, but exercising is not my thing. I do try. I think I just need more motivation. It’s not easy.
I am a very shy person. I don’t even feel comfortable talking on the phone which is funny since I used to be a telephone operator. I tend to be a bit of a “wallflower”. However once you get to know me, and once I feel comfortable in a situation, watch out! That is when I really shine. I’ve also been told that I have a great sense of humor and I’m a fun person to be around.
Writing and photography are two passions of mine. My dream is to one day see something that I wrote or a photograph that I captured in print. That is one of the many items on my “Bucket List”. More about my Bucket List in a bit.
I have always loved to write. Even as a child I would write elaborate stories. In 7th grade I even won an award for a story that I wrote, which to this day I want to turn into a book. I think it would make a great children’s book.
I ramble a lot when I write. I also tend to write as if I am talking to you, which often drove my English teachers bonkers. I don’t know if there is an actual term for the way I write. Conversational writing? If you read my blog and then meet me in person you’ll discover that the way I write is pretty much the same way I talk.
My other passion is photography. I’m far from a professional, but wish I could be. I think I would pass out if one of my photos ended up in National Geographic. That would be amazing!
Here are a few examples of some of my favorite photos. I’m still amazed that I was able to capture the Bald Eagle so well. I actually had to position the camera in between the bars on his cage to get that close to him. I also seem to take better nature shots then I do photos of people or things. I guess it’s because I love nature, the outdoors and all creatures great and small.
The two dogs pictured above were PLAYING. They were not fighting. I used to volunteer at our local animal shelter to photograph the animals available for adoption. They used to use the photos on their website, PetFinder.com and in local publications.
I love animals. We have five cats – Velcro, Kitty, Padmé, Anakin and Bella. Two of our cats are named after Star Wars characters (we ♥ Star Wars). Bella, our youngest, we fostered since she was one day old. We ended up adopting her when she was old enough. Sadly Bella has really bad Asthma, allergies and Hyperthyroidism. Her vet and medication bills are astronomical, but we do what we do because we love our four legged family members.
We also have a dog. His name is Espn (pronounced Es-pin). He’s named after ESPN the sports channel (I’ll let you guess who named him). Espn thinks he’s a cat. He loves catnip, sleeps in the cat beds and we’ve even seen him in the cat tree.
We also have two fish. We used to have five fish and four snails but only two unnamed fish remain. I call them Fishy and Wishy.
Let’s see…what else can I tell you about me?
I love to travel, but my family never has the money to go too far. Plus we have to take our pets into consideration.
I do LOVE going to Hollywood/LA. I’ve been there a few times over the past couple of years on press trips. Some day I would love to be able to bring my family with me. My husband dreams of visiting the West Coast. I’m sure once they finally get to go they will never want to come back to New York.
We hope that we can get back to Disney World some day soon. The only time we went was back in 2oo2.
I am grateful to be a blogger because it has afforded me many opportunities. Meeting celebrities is one of my most favorite perks. I received a hug and kiss from Sir Elton John, sat 2′ away from Hugh Jackman at a round table interview, attended a red carpet premiere after party with the likes of Tim Burton, Winona Rider and Martin Landau, met and had a wonderful conversation with Tom Kenny (the voice of SpongeBob and many other characters), met Vince Vaughn (he’s so sweet and funny!) and many more amazing celebrity encounters.
Being a blogger has also helped me to knock a few things off my Bucket List.
- Attending a Red Carpet Premiere and mingling with celebrities (I’ve done that twice already!)
- Taking a Hot Air Balloon Ride
- Ride in a Helicopter over New York City
I have many more things on my Bucket List, but I’m not sure if blogging will help me experience them (but you never know) such as touching one of the Great Pyramids in Egypt, ride a boat in the Great Barrier Reef (Australia), take my family to the UK to meet my cousins and to see where my family is from or own a house. Trust me, I have many more things on my Bucket List. These are just a few.
I have a college degree (Associates) in Community Mental Health Assisting. I graduated with honors for my Associates degree. I was working towards my Bachelor’s in Social Work but quit college a month before my daughter was born. It was hard for me to make the hour and a half commute (each way) to my college being pregnant. That is one of my worse life regrets. I wish I would have stayed in college. I was working towards my Master’s in Forensic Physiology. I wanted to be a criminal profiler. I have always been fascinated by the minds of killers (what makes someone turn into a cold blooded killer?). I even interned for a year at a maximum security all-male prison. I was a Peer Counselor. That was an eye-opening experience.
I love movies, especially horror movies and comedies. My current favorite TV shows are The Walking Dead, Chicago Fire and Once Upon a Time.
I love crafts and crafting, but thing never seem to turn out the way I want them to.
I want to be a great cook and baker someday. I’m a good cook but I want to learn to make gourmet quality meals. I also can’t even frost a cake the right away so I have a lot to learn about baking.
I have a massive collection of books. I ♥ books. I just never have the time to read them.
I collect Fisher Price Little People. I even have my original ones (wooden!) from when I was a child.
I am not an expert in anything. I seem to know a little about a lot of things. That is why my blog tag line is “A little bit of this, a little bit of that”.
My blog means the world to me. I work on it each and every day. I have been blogging since April 2008 and I have no plans of stopping.
My readers are VERY important to me. I continually strive to attract new site visitors and hopefully turn them into loyal readers. I care about what my readers have to say. I welcome readers comments, suggestions and ideas. I get excited when I see reader comments on my posts. I even enjoy getting personal e-mails from my readers.
I love working with companies and brands. I want to make my blog a place where companies and brands want to be a part of. Ideally I would love to provide quality content and information about companies and brands for my readers, as well as a place for companies and brands to attract new customers. I would consider that a win-win situation.
I know there are more blogs on the Internet then people can count. I realize that mine is just a drop in the bucket. That is OK with me. As long as my readers enjoy my site, and companies and brands enjoy working with me, I am a happy girl.
