For every parent, keeping his or her children safe and away from danger is the number one priority. There are numerous sources of danger for children, both people and objects. Majority of parents worry about their children’s safety all the time whether they are in school or at home. Therefore, it is essential to teach your kids safety measures, build their self-esteem, and establish an open relationship with them.
Here are several golden ways to keep your children safe.
Keep Children in sight
Always keep your children in sight especially those under eight years. If you must let the younger children out of your sight, shift them to a safe place such as a bedroom or a playroom enclosed with the best baby gates.
Look for dangers in your house
Almost anything and everything at home pose a danger for younger kids. Put medications away from younger kids because tablets look like candies to them. Cover electrical outlets and secure cabinets and other furniture to prevent injuries and accidents. Newscasts report cases of children who are injured or even killed when they pulled an unsecured dresser or cabinet on themselves.
Start Safety Training Early
Teach your kids safety measures when they are still young. When your child is of age, teach them their full name, address, and phone number and rehearse with them until they can remember. Let your kids know that should not go off with anyone even people they know without informing you. Teach older kids how to cross roads and ask adults for directions.
Listen
Listen to your child when they try to confide in you the things that worry them. Maybe they want you to know about a bully at school or a stranger who is stocking them. Teach your child to say no to things they do not like and not to keep ‘body secrets.’ When you teach your child not to have body secrets, he/she should tell you immediately someone touches a part of his/her body. Importantly, build your child’s self-esteem and offer them love, attention, and acknowledgment.
Stranger Danger
Teach your children that strangers do not have always have a rough appearance and can have a fine appearance. Point out that they should never leave with a stranger or get into their vehicle no matter what they say to them. Ensure you tell your child what to do when they get lost and whom to ask for help. They can ask for help from a police officer, shop assistant, or someone with a young child. Teach your kids to be destructive when in danger in order to draw attention. Let them scream, hit, bite, and make a scene.
Safety is the number one priority for many parents. It is essential to teach your kids safety tips and practices because they can be the difference between life and death. Make sure that your children are prepared and confident to face danger when it comes. Nevertheless, do not frighten the child or instill unnecessary fear when giving safety advice.
