Check out this important video above.
I have to say my family is full of “accident prone” people. Not so much my dear husband, but certainly me and our children. We’re always bumping into things, tripping, getting paper cuts… you name it. Bumps and cuts are pretty common place when you have kids, especially if you have the “rough and tumble” type. Sadly my kids are “city kids” who are not keen on playing in the dirt and getting dirty (they are terrified of Lady Bugs… that should give you and idea). But my kids do get paper cuts, burn their fingers on a cup of hot chocolate and things along that line.
After I have my kids wash their boo-boo with soap and water I used to grab for antibacterial products like Bacitracin or a similar product. Now when anyone gets a cut I reach for a product called StaphAseptic.
StaphAseptic is first aid antiseptic and pain relieving gel. What got me most interested in StaphAseptic is because I learned that there are antibiotic resistant germs including one called methicillin resistant staph (MRSA) which is growing at an alarming rate. These dangerous germs are of great concern to health professionals because they can be spread easily from person to person. Often they are misdiagnosed as boils or spider bites!
MRSA is spread through close skin-to-skin contact. It can also be picked up from contaminated sports equipment! If you have a child who plays a lot of sports you might find this especially interesting. You can also get it from poor hygiene.
I learned from the StaphAseptic web site that common topical antibiotics, including popular triple antibiotics, have not been shown to prevent MRSA infections and can cause skin irritation in nearly 10% of the population. StaphAseptic has been shown to kill over 99.9% of MRSA germs.
Originally the makers of StaphAseptic marketed this product to athletes trainers and coaches, but some moms started to tell the company that their product would be great for the whole family. Now StraphAseptic is available for sale in drug stores like CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid.
StaphAseptic also contains a product called Lidocaine which helps ease any pain associated with a wound. With children you want products to help ease the pain of a wound (or if you have any “big babies” like my husband, ha ha).
Other over the counter products such as Neosporin, Bactine and Bacitracin are fine, however they won’t aid in the protection against the methicillin resistant staph infection (MRSA). That is why I now use StaphAseptic whenever my family has any cuts.
I cannot tell you how well it is from a scientific stand point. I can tell you that the few times we have used it so far (everyone has used it except one of my kids so far) it’s been fine. It’s a nice gel and it can have a bit of a cooling effect (to help with the pain). It has a decent smell. It does smell a little “medicine” like but nothing too bad. And the smell doesn’t seem to last too long. My husband is not too keen on smells (they give him headaches) but he never once mentioned the smell of the StaphAseptic so I’m assuming he never had an issue with it.
I have an brand new, never opened, extra tube of StaphAseptic that I would like to give away to a reader of She Scribes. Since I will be sending out this prize I will be happy to ship to anywhere.
To enter please visit the StaphAseptic web site by clicking HERE. Look around and then come back here and leave me a fact or something you found really interesting on the site about the product. Warning – do not look at the pictures of skin infections (left side bar) if you get queasy easily. I STRONGLY encourage you to watch the video “MRSA: The Ticking Time Bomb“. If you are like me you’ll run to the drug store to buy up a lot of StaphAseptic once you learn all the facts about MRSA. YIKES!
