This is my favorite time of year. I love the holiday season. Not only do I love decorating my home and spending quality time with family and friends but I also enjoy the food that we get to indulge in. It’s no wonder that people gain weight during the holidays. It’s hard to resist all the good foods that are readily available, especially homemade baked goods.
I love cake and cookies, but I also enjoy pastries during the holiday season (and year round!). One pastry that I love is Rugelach. The local bakery does carry Rugelach year round but I usually only see it served by family and friends during the holiday season. Because of this I always associate Rugelach with the holidays.
Rugelach is a traditional Eastern European pastry. It goes great with a cup of tea or coffee. Rugelach can be filled with a variety of ingredients like walnuts, chocolate, marzipan, cinnamon or fruit preserves. My favorites are the ones filled with walnuts and raisins and chocolate filled Rugelach.
I had the opportunity to try out a variety of flavors of Rugelach from Debbie’s Rugelach. Debbie’s had many stores in the Northern California/San Francisco area. Thankfully they also have an online shop. Prices range from $7.95 for a six-piece sampler to $19.95 for 18 pieces of your favorite flavor (plus shipping).
I had the chance to try Very Apricot, Chocolate Chip and Traditional Currant Walnut.
I have one word for you – YUMMY!
I’m always going to favor the more traditional flavors. I also love nuts so the Currant Walnut Rugelach was my favorite. I have only had Chocolate Chip Rugelach a few times. Debbie’s did not disappointment. It was just as delicious as I remembered.
The first time I tried the Very Apricot I thought it was rather “boring”. The second time I tried it I really enjoyed it. Maybe the first piece didn’t have much of the Apricot preserves in it? All I know is the second time I tried it I really tasted the Apricot. Normally I’m not a fan of Apricot but it worked out really well in this pastry. There was not too much. It was “just right”. I think if it was overflowing with Apricot I might not have enjoyed it as much.
What I liked about Debbie’s Regulach is that it tasted fresh, like it was made in the bakery across the street. It did not taste “mass produced” or like it’s been sitting on a store shelf for the past few months. Even though I received mine in the mail it tasted just as good as the Regulach that I can get if I walked across the street to the bakery.
Since I can get Rugelach in the bakery across the street I don’t think I would be ordering from Debbie’s Rugelach for me. However I think I would order as a gift for a friend or relative. Since they ship anywhere in the US I could order a few packages and have them sent to my grandfather or my friend. After all, who wouldn’t enjoy the gift of something as delicious as Rugelach? I know I’d love to open up my mail and find a package of yummy Regulach waiting for me. 🙂
