Raise your hands if you like to wash dishes. Chances are very few people (if any) will admit that they enjoy washing dishes. It’s not exactly the highlight of anyone’s day. Cookie and baking is always fun, just not having to take care of the dishes afterwards.
We own a dishwasher which we take full advantage of. We don’t use it if we just have a few dishes. We usually save it for when we have a big, messy meal or we have company over and would rather spend time with them rather than wash dishes. I have to admit that sometimes we use the dishwasher because we are just too lazy to wash the dishes too.
Growing up I never had a dishwasher, but my husband did. When we moved into our condo my husband would always wash off the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. I always found that to be very odd. After all, why would you wash the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher? Isn’t that what the dishwasher was for?
My husband said that he washes/rinses off dishes before running them through the dishwasher because the dishwasher doesn’t always do a great job washing dishes. I found out that hard way that he was right about that. Plenty of times dishes have come out not-so-clean when washed in the dishwasher, especially dishes that contained ooey gooey sticky ingredients like cheese, eggs or things that got burned. I normally end up washing those dishes by hand rather than take up space in the dishwasher.
Recently I was asked to take the Finish Sticky Dish Challenge. I was asked to prepare something messy for my family. After our meal I was not allowed to rinse off the bowl/dish I cooked in. Instead I was to let it sit overnight in the dishwasher unwashed. In the morning it was OK to run the dishwasher with one of the Finish Quantum dishwasher “pillows” (for lack of a better definition. I was to record what happened and share my findings. That sound easy enough to me.
I thought about what I could make that would make a mess. I was thinking about making a quiche but I ended up making Potatoes Au Gratin. I knew baked cheese would stick to my dish and be impossible to clean unless it soaked for a bit.
My family likes Potatoes Au Gratin… I don’t. I mean I love how they taste, I just hate cleaning up afterwards.
The above photo shows you just how messy it can be. I always have to soak the dish I cook them in at least overnight to get rid of the stuck on cheese and to soften the spots that got burned so that I can scrub them off.
I resisted the urge to soak the dish and put it un-rinsed in the dishwasher overnight. In the morning I popped in one of the Finish Quantum dish washer cleaner and washed the dirty dish as well as the other dishes left over from dinner.
Finish Quantum has 3-chamber technology that releases agents that breaks down food residues: It’s so powerful, there’s no need to pre-rinse! It’s also wrapper free!
After the dishwasher was done cleaning the dishes I immediately reached for the dish that I cooked the Potatoes Au Gratin in. I was pleasantly surprised. About 95% of the food was gone. The only thing left behind were a few spot where the cheese had burned. It’s hard to tell from the photo but there is a groove (indentation) in the dish (around where the burnt marks are). There were a few dark spots left behind after running the dish through the dishwasher. It wasn’t too bad.
I left the dish on the counter to take a picture of it. I was in the middle of doing something so I couldn’t take the picture right away. When I finally returned to the kitchen I found the dish in the dish rack next to the sink. It had been washed! My husband had washed the black marks off the dish. He didn’t know that I didn’t take a picture of it. He assumed that I did.
Ugh!!!
That was my fault. I should have told him to leave it alone until I took some pictures of it. Unfortunately I don’t have the time to make Potatoes Au Gratin again to see how well it washed a second time.
As I mentioned above, I would have to “guesstimate” that about 95% of the ooey gooey sticky burnt on mess came off with just one wash using Finish Quantum. I think if the dish didn’t have the indentations in it all of the burnt marks would have came off.
Trust me, I rather wash off a few little marks by hand then have to soak the dish and scrub it to get it just as clean.
The above photo was taken BEFORE the dish was washed (NOT AFTERWARDS). I just wanted to point out where the indentation is and where a few of the black burnt marks remained after it was washed in the dishwasher. It’s hard to tell from the photo but there is a small indention in the dish in that area.
If you look at the first picture of the meal you can make out the curve of the indentation there.
