I have never seen the Da Vinci Code or Angels & Demons. They looked like interesting thrillers so when I was given the opportunity to review The Holy Bullet I jumped on it.
The Holy Bullet is about the 1981 assignation attempt on Pope John Paul II. A group called the Holy Alliance investigates the assignation attempt as well as the untimely death of the first Pope John Paul.
The Holy Bullet has many twists and turns. Honestly I think the plot gets lost among the many different sub-plots. I actually got very confused and lost. The story bounces around from the late 70’s, early 80’s and present time. It was hard to keep track of the plot because I was too busy trying to focus on what year I was reading about as well as the sub-plots. I just think it bounced around way too much. I understand information from other years is necessary for the story line but I would have been happier if it just stayed in one time frame with just references to other years.
I wasn’t able to connect with any of the characters. There were just way too many of them and none of them was really thrusted into the “main character” position, in my opinion. I think that has a lot to do with why I just couldn’t get into the book. I think it’s because I wasn’t able to connect with any of the characters. The characters were not discussed in great detail so you do not really know much about them.
I also got very lost and confused with all the references to the Catholic Church, CIA, KGB, the President of the United States and an organization called Opus Dei.
Maybe it’s just me. This is not the kind of genre I would normally read. I also didn’t see the Da Vinci Code or Angels & Demons. I’m guessing if you loved those movies and/or books then maybe The Holy Bullet might be the perfect book for you.
I’m not saying the whole book is bad. I do feel it did have some good parts. I just think it was not a good match for me. It happens. Not every book I’m going to rave about in a positive way.
The Holy Bullet is sold at various book retail locations including Amazon and Barnes & Nobles.
I’m giving The Holy Bullet 2.5 out of five stars.
