It’s been a long time since I’ve had to give baby products a thought. My “baby” is about to turn 15 years old. Sigh…
I recently went back to work part time working in a childcare setting. The children we see are “drop offs”, meaning we don’t see the same children all the time (except on occasion). The children in our care are involved in family court cases (divorce, order of protection, neglect…).
We take newborns to 15 years old (the oldest I’ve seen so far is 12 years old).
We have cared for several infants over the past few weeks. I miss those years! I don’t miss changing diapers but I do miss being around babies.
Where I work we give each child that comes and stays with us a free book that they can keep. Sadly we don’t have many books for babies. We try and give the parent a book for the baby for the future, but we have nothing the little one can enjoy right away.
As you know babies love to put things in their mouths, rip things and break things. It’s not intentional. They are babies and that is what happens. They are curious about the world around them. They don’t understand that ripping the pages out of a book is not what you are supposed to do.
When my daughter was a baby she had a small book made out of some kind of vinyl-like material that allowed her to put it in her mouth and even play with it in the bath tub. I was impossible for her to rip the pages out of it. It was the perfect baby book.
Did you know that an American Academy of Pediatrics study released this past June (2014) linked reading to your child from infancy to future success, stating that “reading aloud and talking about pictures and words in age-appropriate books can strengthen language skills, literacy development, and parent-child relationships.” I find that interesting.
Of course babies can’t actually read. They look at the illustrations in the book, then the book usually goes into their mouth and they chew on it.
Indestructibles® is a special line of book that are printed on a paper-like material that can’t be ripped, torn or punctured. The books are washable, chew proof, gum proof and drool proof making them ideal for babies up to 1 year old.
Indesctrutibles® have colorful, bright and cheerful illustrations and simple text. They engage babies while encouraging language development.
I received to review two books from Indesctructibles®.
Baby Peekabook – Celebrates the favorite playtime game while teaching the concept of object permanence. “Who’s hiding behind the toys? Peekaboo! It’s Puppy!”
Baby Night-Night – This book makes the bedtime ritual—putting on pajamas, reading a story, and the good-night kiss—a special time for parents and children.
Both books are available from Workman Press and will be released in September 2014. They will retail for $5.95 each.
Both books are adorable. I love the illustrations.
I didn’t actively try and tear the pages since I am an adult and a lot stronger than a baby. These books do seem sturdy enough.
I worried about a baby getting a paper cut from them but I ran my fingers along the edges and so far no cuts, which is a relief.
I also like that the books are very small and thin making them ideal to tuck inside a diaper bag or purse. They are great to have when you and your baby are on the go.
I plan on bringing the books into my job and keeping them on hand for the next infants to come through our doors. It will be great to finally be able to give them a book to take home too – one that they can enjoy NOW and not a year or two from now.

Below is a video that shows you more about these books. They are really cute and a fantastic idea.
