I am a long time fan of the hit television series Little House on the Prairie. I remember sitting down to watch it with my sister when we were little. I even dressed like someone from back in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s time for Halloween one year (my mom made an awesome costume for me). I even read some of the books. I think I still have one of the books in our bookcase.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the pilot movie. FORTY YEARS! I suddenly feel very old. Sigh…
The series has been newly restored with high definition picture and sound quality. Season one, including the pilot movie, is now available from Lionsgate Home Entertainment on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD.
One of the most cherished TV series of all time, Little House on the Prairie continues to capture new generations of fans around the world by sharing its timeless themes of love, morality and rich family values. This American classic can now be experienced like never before with the Little House On The Prairie – Season One Deluxe Remastered Edition on Blu-ray (plus Digital HD UltraViolet), DVD (plus Digital Ultraviolet) and Digital HD. To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the pilot movie premiere, the beloved series has been completely restored and remastered and will be available in high definition for the first time from Lionsgate Home Entertainment and NBCUniversal Television Consumer Products.
Not seen since their original TV broadcast, all twenty-four season one episodes are now presented complete and uncut, newly restored and remastered for optimal picture and sound quality. Plus, you’ll discover where the Little House on the Prairie TV legend began—with the original, full-length pilot movie that introduced the Ingalls family to millions of viewers around the world.
Here is a trailer for the new release.
I received a copy to review. I was super excited for the set to arrive.
I have seen the pilot movie before but its been ages. There were part of the film that I don’t recall, such as Caroline’s parents and the girl’s aunt, uncle and cousin saying good bye to them before they left for Kansas. I also don’t remember the part where their dog, Jack, was thought to have drowned.
Even though I have seen the pilot before (but don’t remember parts of it) I felt like I was watching it for the first time. It’s been so long since I saw it.
I love that the collection goes in sequence. You can see how their whole lives unfolded in Walnut Grove. After the pilot movie the first episode shows how the family came to settle in Walnut Grove and make friends with Mr. Olsen, Mr. Hanson and Doc Baker. The next episode is about the girls going to school for the first time and meeting the nasty little girl Nellie and her even nastier mother Harriett.
I love that you can watch sequentially or skip to your favorite episodes. There are 24 in total, plus the pilot movie. There were 9 seasons in total (203 episodes in total, not including specials/movies). This collection is just for season one. I hope to get most of the seasons on DVD some day. I wasn’t really fond of the show when it became Little House: A New Beginning and most of the original characters were gone from the show.
This collection also includes the original screen tests for Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert (she was so young and cute!) as well as part one of a special documentary The Little House Phenomenon: A Place in Television History which was is an interesting look at how this show became such a beloved series.
The quality of the picture and sound is amazing. They did a fabulous job remastering it without taking away from the show’s original charm. You can see the difference in the images below.
The Blu-ray set retails for a suggested retail price of $38.99 and the DVD set for $29.98.
Look for Little House On The Prairie – Season One Deluxe Remastered Edition where ever movies are sold.
I have a copy of Little House On The Prairie – Season One Deluxe Remastered Edition on DVD to give to a lucky reader, compliments of Lionsgate Home Entertainment.

My favorite episode was early on in the 1st season. Charles made a deal with a man for a plow and hearth and charles wood do work on a barn and also stack a bunch of feed sacks. If Charles couldn’t finish the job on time he would have to give the man his oxen. Charles did all the work on the barn but couldn’t finishing stacking the feed sacks because he hurt himself. The man took his oxen and charles tried to finish his job and couldn’t. Both Laura and Mary tried to stack the feed but they were to little and all of a sudden one by one the men in town came to finish the job. That episode made me want to live in Walnut Grove.
