Far away in an enchanted land, the Beast and Belle (Beauty & the Beast) marry and become the Kind and Queen of the United States of Auradon. One of their first order of business is to ban all villains and sidekicks to the Isle of the Lost – an island surrounded by a “no magic” barrier.
One their day teenage son, Prince Ben, is preparing to take over the throne. One of the first things he wants to do it bring some of the teens from the Isle of the Lost to Auradon to give them a “second chance.” He believes the children should not suffer from the wrong doings of their parents.
The selected teens include Carlos, son of Cruella de Vil, Jay, son of Jafar, Evie, daughter of the evil queen and Mal, the daughter of Maleficent.
The people of Auradon, some of which are not overly keen on the idea of bring the children of dreaded villains into their village, but they are willing to give them a chance. Their parents on the other hand see this as an opportunity to regain their power and magic and escape from the Isle of the Lost. The only way they can do this is if the teens are able to steal the magic wand from the Fairy Godmother.
Initially the teens try their best NOT to fit in. They don’t see the teens of Auradon as people they want to get to know. That is until Carlos realizes that dogs are not dangerous beasts like his mother told them they were. In fact he befriends the school’s mascot.
Jay is recruited to play on the school’s sports team.
Evie becomes infatuated by Cinderella and Prince Charming’s son Chad.
Mal befriends Jane, the daughter of the Fairy Godmother, in hopes of getting close to the magic wand for her mother. Mal soon learns that the Fairy Godmother will be bring the wand with her at Ben’s coronation ceremony. She asks Ben if she can sit closer to him (to be closer to the Fairy Godmother) but Ben said only his girlfriend could sit there. Currently he’s dating Audrey, daughter of Aurora and Prince Phillip.
In order to do this Mal concocts a magic love spell and puts Ben under her spell. Ben asks Mel to the coronation which upsets Audrey. Audrey then asks Chad to go to the coronation with her which upsets Evie.
Suddenly everything seems to be coming undone. The other students at the school turn on them. Mal is not sure of her feelings for Ben. Evie learns something about herself she didn’t know before and much more.
Will the villain teens get the magic wand for their parents, or will they have a change of heart? Will Ben make it to his coronation and become King? Will others find out what their evil plan is an stop them? To find out you need to pick up a copy of Disney’s Descendants, now available where movies are sold.
From the previews I saw prior to watching the movie, I personally thought it looked interesting. My husband was a bit reluctant to watch it. My kids were on the fence too. It turns out that they all enjoyed the film.
I like how Disney has a way of magically waving the stories of infamous characters together in a natural way. Take for example ABC’s Once Upon a Time (ABC is part of the Disney family). Descendants kind of reminded me of that series, but with teenage characters.
The plot was good. It’s a believable story.
I think they did a great job with casting. The actors looked the way you would expect their characters to look.
I was surprised to see Booboo Stewart in the cast. He’s probably best known as Seth Clearwater from the Twilight movies (he was one of the werewolves). I didn’t know that Booboo is actually a part of the Disney family. He received a record deal with Disney at the young age of 12 and toured with such acts as the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus and the Cheetah Girls.
There is some singing and dancing in this movie, but not too much where it becomes “overkill.” Think of this film along the lines of High School Musical and Teen Beach Movie. The songs are enjoyable.
There are some bonus features including bloopers, back stage dance rehearsals and a look at Mal (#Mal) though social media.
Have you seen the movie? Did you like it? Did you have a favorite character?
