If you are a frequent reader of She Scribes you probably know that I am a big fan of the horror movie genre. Sadly, they don’t make them like the classics I grew up with (The Exorcist, Halloween, Friday the 13th…). Today’s horror movies are either plagued with a lot of unnecessary nudity and “F bombs,” or they are more blood and guts than a story line. Still… I will never turn down a horror movie review. Occasionally a gem does come through.
Now available for home viewing is the horror film K-Shop. It would fall under that category of films that tries to be gross – or super gross as in this film. As far as scary, this film is not even the slightest scary. I only refer to it as a horror movie simply because it’s super gross and comedy or “rom-com” certainly would not do it for this film.
Salah works in his father’s kabob shop. I didn’t even know such shops existed.
Day after day Salah and his father Zaki have to deal with foul-mouth, obnoxious drunks and other low-lifes. The dregs of humanity show up in their shop, reap havoc, mistreat them and a variety of horrible antics.
After his father’s death, Salah has to take over the role of the shop manager to help keep the family’s shop going.
The stress of taking care of the shop, the loss of his father and constantly being bombarded with nasty drunks night after night proves to be too much for Salah. He snaps and kills one of the drunks.
Salah is at a loss. He doesn’t know what to do with the body. If it’s found he’ll be arrested and that would put an end to the family’s kabob shop. To dispose of the body Salah does the unthinkable. You guessed it… he chops his victim up and serves it as part of the restaurants kabobs.
Killing the drunk seemed to turn Salah into some kind of a vigilante. He finds it easy to kill the drunks and disposes of their bodies among the meat he serves at the restaurant. He even goes so far as to go after a neighborhood drug dealer.
What will it take to stop Salah’s killing spree? Will the special meat in his kabobs be found out? To find out you need to pick up a copy of K-Shop. Look for it where ever movies are sold.
As I mentioned earlier in this post, I would consider this a horror movie simply because of it’s grossness – but – this movie is not scary at all. Some of the graphic murders are pretty disgusting. I actually found myself closing my eyes – and I never do that.
I wanted to like this film. It sounded promising and the trailer looked interesting. Sadly I was not a fan of this film. It was gross, slow at times and a bit predictable.
It’s horrific to think that there are that many drunks and low-lifes that come out at night. People throwing up in the streets, urinating on buildings and reaping havoc on innocent people. That to me is scary! I can understand why Salah would snap after having to deal with that night after night. If I were him I would have closed the family’s shop and got a decent paying job. No human being should be expected to tolerate that night after night.
I enjoyed the concept of this film. The synopsis sounded really cool, but I think the story was drawn out too long. There were segments of the film that I felt weren’t really necessary for the story line. They came across as being “fillers” to add more time to the film, something this film did not need.
The idea of unknowingly eating human flesh is pretty gross too.
I honestly wanted to like this film, but it didn’t come off as well as it did in the trailer. That happens to be the case a lot – the trailer is better than the actual film. Its as if the trailer showcases the only good parts to the film.
Keep in mind I’m just one person and this is my opinion. Just because the film didn’t do it for me doesn’t meant that someone else won’t think it’s a brilliant film.
Here is the film’s trailer for your enjoyment.
