Now playing in theaters across the country is the dramady (drama and comedy) film, Sam & Kate.
Sam & Kate stars Academy Awards winners Dustin Hoffman and Sissy Spacek, and their real life children, Jake Hoffman, Schuyler Fisk, as well as Henry Thomas.
To be honest, I didn’t know that Dustin Hoffman had a son who was an actor. I knew Sissy Spacek’s daughter, Schuyler Fisk, was flesh and blood after I saw her in the movie Snow Day. She looks exactly like her mother, even though her last name is different.
Dustin Hoffman (Bill) lives with his grown son, Sam (the younger Hoffman). Sam is Bill’s caretaker, now that his father is aging. Sam also works at a chocolate factory with his friend Ron (Thomas). Sam is also a talented artist.
Sam meets Kate at a bookstore where she works. Their first meeting didn’t go as planned. Sam tried to ask her out, but Kate turned him down.

Kate (Fisk) and Sam’s paths cross again at church. Kate is also taking care of her elderly mother, Tina (Spacek). Since that “meet cute,” they are in each other’s lives. But not in the way you’d think.
Will Sam and Kate end up together and live happily ever after, or will it be Bill and Tina who find love and happiness? To find out, check out the film Sam & Kate. Look for it playing at a theater near you.
This film does have it’s comedic moments, but overall I’d say it’s a drama. It does tug at your heart strings. It’s hard to see Bill and Tina at the “winter” of their lives, and their children struggle to not only care for their aging parents, but also overcome things in their paths in hopes of finally finding the happiness they deserve.

Predictable? Yes and no. While I could see what direction things were going, often I was wrong and the storyline went another way. It is very heartbreaking too. I needed tissues!
Henry Thomas looks so old. I am surprised how much he’s aged. And he plays a stoner in this film, which is an odd role for him if you ask me.
I think this film was exceptionally well acted. After all, two Academy Award winners are in this film. It appears that the apple didn’t fall from the trees because the younger Hoffman and Fisk clearly are excellent actors like their famous parents.
Below is the film’s trailer for your enjoyment.
