Now playing in select theaters across the country, as well as On Demand, is the horror film, The Accursed.
The Accursed stars Mena Suvari (American Beauty), Sarah Grey (Power Rangers), Meg Foster (They Live), and Alexis Knapp (Pitch Perfect).
Elly (Grey) finds herself back at her childhood home after her mother passed away. She and her mother did not have the best relationship over the years. After her father left them, Elly found herself leaving her mother as well. It’s not that she didn’t care about her mother, but she wanted to live her own life too.
At her mother’s home, Elly experiences strange hallucinations which make it seem like her mother is still alive.
Elly gets a phone call from a women (Suvari) named Alma, who claims her mother recommended her as a caretaker. She asks Elly if she can care for a woman named Ms. Ambrose. Ms. Ambrose will be transported to a hospital in a few days, but Alma (the caretaker of the estate) needs someone to watch over Ms. Ambrose for a few days.
Elly agrees and finds herself in a creepy old home in the middle of no where.
The hallucinations Elly was experiencing at her home seem to have followed her to Ms. Ambrose, but they are more intense and realistic.
Soon Elly realizes that her presence there is intentional.
Who is Ms. Ambrose? Why was Elly summoned there? What is the reason by the hallucinations? To find out, check out the film The Accursed. Look for it at a theater near you and On Demand.
I’m a die hard horror movie fan, so it takes A LOT to impress me. It’s been years since I’ve seen a horror movie that I thought “checked all the boxes.” With that being said, this movie wasn’t that bad. I personally thought it was a bit confusing at times, but towards the end of the film, things were made clear so events that happened prior made sense. I just wish I knew the backstory before the ending of the film. I think I would have liked it more.
The special effects in this film were surprisingly good. There is a demon that comes out of the victim’s mouth, so there are several scenes where you see a large, creepy hand come out of someone’s mouth.
There were other special effects that I thought were really good.
Overall the acting was pretty good. Mena Suvari looks much older in this film (a lot different from her American Pie days). She played a stern, wicked woman – and she looked the part – but I couldn’t help but keep thinking about her sweet and innocent from the American Pie movie.
I have seen all the Pitch Perfect films. I didn’t even recognize Alexis Knapp. She looks so different in this film. Sadly, she didn’t have that much of a part in this film.
The movie was decent enough. I don’t think I would have paid money to see this film in the theater, but On Demand, I might have rented it. It was entertaining enough to keep my attention the entire time, and I didn’t find myself laughing (which I do) at “scary” parts that are not scary. I didn’t think this film was scary either, but there is some really good (and gory) special effects.
The film is 96 minutes long, and currently has no rating. I would probably give it a rated R or PG-13 due to some of the gross and creepy scenes.
