It’s not uncommon for children to be afraid of the “monsters” lurking in their bedroom closet, or under their beds, most especially at night. I personally wasn’t afraid of that. I was more so afraid of what might be looking back at me when I opened the curtain in the bedroom window. No kidding. I thought red eyes, like those from the Amityville Horror film would be peering back at me.
Sawyer (Lyra Blair) is afraid of what is in her bedroom closet. She’s even seen the “monster” under her bed. Her father (Messina) thinks it has to do with Sawyer dealing with the death of her mother.
Sawyer’s older sister Sadie (Thatcher) is dealing with issues of her own. She morning the loss of her mother, all while dealing with a school bully.
Their father, Will, is a therapist. One day a random man shows up needing to speak with someone. He is not a patient of Will’s, but he agrees to see him. The man talks about how he’s not the one that killed his children, and is rambling on about something that Will can’t make sense of.
Unbeknown to Will, the entity that the mysterious man is afraid of has followed him into Will’s home. This entity makes it’s presence known to both Sawyer and Sadie, but their father doesn’t believe them.
What is going on in Sawyer and Sadie’s home? Is there a dark presence in that home, or is there something else going on? To find out, check out the film The Boogeyman. Look for it where every you purchase or rent films.
I am a die hard horror movie fan. It takes a lot to impress me. For that reason you need to take my review with a “grain of salt.” For some die hard fans, this film might be just okay. For those who are easily scared, you might want to re-think watching this film.
First of all, the acting was pretty good, especially considering that Vivien Lyra Blair is only 11 years old. I don’t know too many 11 year old that would be able to handle a role in a movie like this. I’m very impressed by this young lady and I am looking forward to what her future holds as an actress.
Sophie Thatcher is also very young (22 years old). She also did an excellent job in this film.
The storyline it’s self was decent. After all, it’s from the mind of the great Stephen King. I would have liked to learn more about the “monster,” as in what it is, what it wants, and how it gets from one home to another so quickly. I would also like to know how the “mystery man” was not in prison if people believed her murdered his children. So there are some holes in the plot of this film, but I guess that is where the viewer’s imagination kicks in. You just have to answer those questions on your own.
The special effects are awesome. The monster is cool, especially when it crawls under the bed and all you see are it’s long, grotesque legs trailing behind it’s body. I also thought it was cool how it crawled into the corner of the room.
The film is only rated PG-13, so it’s not going to be overly terrifying. I would have liked to have seen what the film would be like if it was rated R. I bet it would have been a “scream-fest” for sure.
