With the pandemic, Zoom and other online meeting platforms have become the “norm” for a lot of people. Business meetings, doctor’s appointments, and getting “together” with friends online is now common place. But can you make an entire film on a Zoom-like meeting platform? Yes you can!
Six co-workers who work on a soon-to-be-cancelled television series, Belle, get together online to talk about their situation. For the sake of this review, I’ll refer to their online platform as Zoom.
One of the friends comes up with the idea of creating a horror movie that they can all star in. That might work, but due to the pandemic, there is no place to film it, and they cannot afford to hire a film crew either.
One of them comes up with the idea of filming their parts in the comfort of their own homes using their own cellphones. Then the film footage can be uploaded and put together using editing programs.
The film is a work in progress, and they go along as they figure it out. The film doesn’t even have a working title (thus the reason why this film is entitled Untitled Horror Movie).
Making the film up as they go along, one of them suggests that they PRETEND to summon an evil spirit, not knowing that they would summon a real, evil demon that starts to kill them off one by one.
At first, they didn’t believe their fellow castmate was killed by an unseen spirit. They honestly thought she was doing what she does best… act. When it turns out that this is not act, the remaining actors have to figure out how to stop the evil spirt in order to save their own lives.
Who will survive? What will become of their movie? To find out, you need to rent or purchase Untitled Horror Movie. Look for it on streaming services such as iTunes and Amazon.
I’ll be honest with you, I am not a fan of “found footage” movies (such as Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield). I don’t like it when the movie bounces all over the place to mimic someone running, walking or being scared holding a camera. It bothers my eyes and I have a hard time focusing. I also don’t like how the things sometimes get too dark where you can barely see anything.
Thankfully this film, although shot in “real time,” so to speak, is not horrible like found footage films. Most of the time the actors are seated in front of their computers, so the footage is not bouncing around. There are a few times where the actors are doing Facetime on their phones, but the footage is easy to see and not “bouncy.”
This is not entirely a horror movie. While it is a horror movie about a horror movie that was being made on Zoom, this film is also a comedy. The way the actors bicker and banter back and forth is funny.
Each of the actors have their own personalities too, which is nice. I’m sure each person who watches this film will have a favorite and hope that he/she survives.
At first I thought that this movie might be kind of boring and/or too silly to be truly entertaining, but I was very wrong. This movie is really good. Not only that, the way the film was created is truly unique. In this day and age, filming an entire movie via Zoom is extraordinary to say the least. It just goes to show that you don’t have to spend millions to make a film, and shoot at exotic locations around the world, and hire “A” actors to make a fun and entertaining movie. Untitled Horror Movie proves that.
I’m very impressed, not only over how the film was made, but also the acting was pretty good too. There is a delightful ensemble of actors in this film.
There are movies I am sent to review that are “one and done,” meaning I’ll see it once and never watch it again. There are also some movies I would purchase for our “at home” movie collection, and other movies I won’t buy, but I’d stop and watch it again if it popped up on a premium channel. I can honestly say that Untitled Horror Movie is actually a film I would consider buying for our movie collection. I want to see it again, knowing what I know now. I want to see if I missed any little details the first time around.
