Did you know that TODAY, October 6, 2014 it’s National Child Health Day. In fact all month long is National Child Health Month. Many people focus on October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month – which is great – but we shouldn’t over look the health of our littlest family members either.
Did you know that fit bodies can lead to fit minds in children? This is according to new U.S. research. I believe that to be true. Healthy bodies equal healthy minds for most people.
In honor of National Child Health Day, America’s Nutritionist, Mitzi Dulan has developed an exciting family physical activity program called 60 Minutes of Motion that’s available nationwide starting October 6. Mitzi is the team nutritionist for the Kansas City Royals. She also has a staggering 3.7 MILLION followers on Pinterest. Wow!
This is NOT a 60 minute workout. It’s a FREE program that helps kids and parents mix and match easy and fun activities that helps to build healthy routines into daily scheduled, even busy schedules. The goal is to help kids (and hopefully their parents) to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity in each day.
I was sent a deck of 60 Minutes of Motion cards. Each deck of 25 cards contain ideas/suggestions that can be mixed and matched for outdoor and/or indoor movement, play or adventure. You can download the cards FREE on the Clif Bar/Clif Kid website – Clif Kid 60 Minutes of Motion cards.
The 60 Minutes of Motion deck of cards includes:
- 10 Motion Cards: one minute bursts of motion that have a specific movement, like star jumps, crab walks or planks.
- 5 Activity Cards: sustained 10 minute activities that kids can do solo or with friends and family.
- 5 Adventure Cards: wild cards with inspiring words and phrases that prompt kids to choose their own imagination-filled adventure.
- 2 Game Cards: motion-filled games (inspired by CLIF Kid Backyard Game of the Year) for hours of family fun and play.
- 1 Snack Card and 1 Hydration Card: tips on how to nourish yourself before, during and after outdoor play and activity.
As a parent I love this idea. Although these are more geared towards younger children, I think there are a few things I could adapt in the cards to suit my teens. Thankfully my daughter goes to the gym for an hour (or more) each week and she eats relativity healthy enough. It’s my son that could probably benefit more from these cards. He needs motivation to get active and do some physical activity.
How does your child stay active on a daily basis? Do you think you child gets at least 60 minutes of physical activity in every day? If not, in what ways do you encourage your child to be active? Feel free to share your thoughts. And don’t forget to download your FREE cards.
