Today, December 18, 2012, the surprise hit movie, Pitch Perfect, is available on Blu-ray and DVD.
The first time I saw a trailer for the movie I had a feeling it was going to be a hit. It has humor and great music – a “pitch perfect” combination. 🙂
Pitch Perfect is the story of college all girl a capella group called the Barden Bellas. A cappella means that they sing without the aid of music.
The Bellas are good, but not nearly as good as their rival college group, the all male group called Treble Makers. Part of the Bellas problem is that they stick to boring old classics and don’t dive into today’s music culture like their rival campus group does.
The Bellas made it all the way to the International Championship competition, only to be humiliated by the group’s future Aubrey who vomited on stage.
The Bellas need all the help they can get if they are ever going to get back to the championship competition to redeem themselves. What they need are some talented new members who can not only sing, but also “bring it”.
Beca is a new student at Barden. She’s a loner who prefers to keep to herself and her music rather then get involved with anyone or anything. She doesn’t even want to be at college, but her father, who is a professor at Barden, is making her attend. All Beca wants to do is move to Los Angeles and try and make it as a DJ.
At a “club fair”, Beca meets Aubrey and Chloe who try and talk Beca into joining the Bellas. Beca turns them down, telling them that she can’t sing. Her secret is soon discovered by Chloe who over hears Beca singing in the shower.
Beca’s father agrees to let Beca move to LA IF she gives college a chance and joins a club and makes an effort to interact with others. Beca agrees to his deal and reluctantly joins the Bellas.
The Bellas need A LOT of work. The unique group of girls includes self proclaimed “Fat Amy”, a very boisterous and often outspoken student from Australia, and Lily, a very meek and quiet girl (and when I say quiet I mean no one can hear a word she says).
Beca has caught the eye of another Barden student name Jesse, who just happens to be one of the new members of the Tremble Makers. Having a relationship with the enemy is strictly forbidden and doing so will have you instantly booted out of the Bellas.
Beca has her own ideas about how the Bellas should perform, but first she has to convince Aubrey to break free from their “goody two-shoes” performances.
Will Beca succeed in convincing Aubrey, and the group, to try things her way? Will they make it back to the championship competition to prove once and for all that are winners? Will Beca break the rules and be with Jesse? Will she break her deal with her father, or follow through with it? To find out the answers to all these questions you need to pick up a copy of Pitch Perfect which is available TODAY (December 18, 2012) where ever movies are sold.
This is a fun movie. I wouldn’t consider it “family friendly”. This is certainly a movie for children ages 13+. Some of the terminology used made me cringe a few times while watching it with my 13 and 15 1/2 year old. I’m sure they hear worse at school, but as a parent you really don’t want your kids to hear those kinds of words and terms. There is a bonus feature on the disc that is really filled “potty mouth” words. I would suggest avoiding that if you watching with younger children. Stick with the other bonus features.
“Fat Amy” (I hate referring to her as that, but that is her name in the movie) steals the show. Her tell-it-like-it-is character if funny.
The music is the film was great! The filmmakers assembled a very talented cast for this film. The hit songs they sang appealed to my teens.
I could have done without the vomit scenes (warning – there are two of them) but other than that the rest of the movie was fun and entertaining.
There are plenty of bonus features available. My FAVORITE (I’ve watched it several times already) is the music video for the song “Starships”, sung by the cast as well as people like you and me. The way the video was set up is AWESOME!
If you are reading this via e-mail you can find the video here, http://bit.ly/WfqcHE. It’s brilliant!
