Strange World is an amazing film about the Clade family.
Father and son (Quad as Jaeger Clade, and Gyllenhaal as Searcher Cade) are a legendary family of explorers, going to great length to discover new things. There is only one problem – Searcher doesn’t want to be an explorer like his father. He begrudgingly goes along with him on his many adventures.
One day when Searcher was a young man, he told his father that he doesn’t want to be an explorer, and they part ways. Jaeger Clade was never seen or heard from again.
Searcher marries and has a child. He also becomes a farmer. His life seem idyllic. That is until he is called upon to help find the reason why the root to the plant that sustains the livelihood of the community is dying. They need his explorer skills to help find the source of the problem.
Initially it was just Searcher and a few others. That is until his son, Ethan (voiced by Jaboukie Young-White) makes it a family affair, along with Searcher’s wife, Meridian (Union).
Together, they discover a very strange and unique world beneath their world. They also discover something else…

I LOVE this movie. Not only is it a lot of fun and very entertaining, but the illustrators really created an amazing world of strange creatures. I look at this film as Avatar meets Journey to the Center of the Earth.
The story is also very creative. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but the “center of the Earth” is not what it seems, and all the creatures that live there serve a much better purpose.
I also love the whole story line. I can appreciate the father/son relationship (the same as a mother/son, father/son or mother/son, mother/daughter). Sometimes these relationships can be difficult. And there are situations where we don’t always see eye-to-eye on things.
Sadly, this film might not sit well with some people. There is a mixed race relationship, and one of the characters is openly gay. Personally I am not offended in any way, shape or form. I appreciate the diversity in the film, but I do know that some people will take offense to it. It sort of reminds me of when I went to the theater to see Brokeback Mountain and a couple walked out and never came back. I guess they couldn’t handle their relationship.
I love that the dog has only three legs too. We used to have a dog, Sparky, who had only three legs. One of his front legs was removed due to bone cancer.
If you put those things aside, and focus on the storyline and the amazing creatures and landscape in the strange world, you’d appreciate the movie.
Below is the the film’s trailer for your enjoyment.
