I love holiday books. We have many books for most of the major holidays. When the holiday comes around we put the books out for all of us to enjoy. Most of them are children’s books but they are still fun to read. For example, we have a Barney Halloween book that our daughter wanted to read over and over (and over and over and over…) again. When our son was a little boy he wanted us to read that book too. Even though they are teenagers now it’s still fun to read the book. I find it funny that they still remember the book, almost word for word.
When it comes to Christmas books we have so many that we can only bring up around a 1/3rd of them each year. If we brought them all up we’d have no where to put them all, that’s how many we have.
Despite the fact we have a lot of holiday books I’m always on the look out for new books to add to my family’s collection. Some day I’d love to be able to read these books to my grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The most recent addition to our holiday book collection is a sweet story about Chris Moose. The book is called The Legend of Chris Moose: The Ugliest/Most Beautiful Moose in the World. It’s written by Allen Northcutt.
Chris Moose is the adoptive name of a sweet moose whose real name is Ugly. The other critters that live in the wood like him, but he’s still a bit of an outcast in the group. As you know, calling someone “ugly” can be very harmful and hurt someone’s self esteem.
Ugly and his animal friends decide to take a trip through the woods to visit Momma and Poppa Bear and to attend their Christmas Eve party.
While at the party Ugly does something truly amazing and shows this animals friends what a huge heart he has. The critters then see Ugly in a whole new light and start referring to him as Chris Moose, because it sounds a lot like Christmas.
I wish I could give you more details but I don’t want to give away the whole story. I think it’s one that you’ll want to read for yourself. 🙂
This is a very sweet story. I like that it’s almost like a story within a story. While it is a Christmas story first and foremost it’s also a story about acceptance of those who are seen as “different” from others. The moral of the story is timeless and is applicable year round, not just around the holidays.
I like stories that are more then just “cute” or “sweet”. I like stories that mean something and teach valuable life lessons. Chris Moose is exactly the kind of book I look for to add to my family’s book collection. It’s more than just a holiday story. I think it could also be enjoyed year round.
This is a beautiful story that would make a wonderful addition to any family’s library.
The illustrations were also adorable too. They made me want to reach into the book and give Chris/Ugly a great big hug.
